Overview

The PreSonus Studio Channel is a professional channel strip combining a Class A tube preamplifier, a VCA-based compressor, and a 3-band parametric equalizer. The Studio Channel is perfect for all levels of studios. Ideal for all types of microphones, instruments, keyboards, and synths, the PreSonus Studio Channel has the sonic power and flexibility to achieve any tone you can dream of, including luscious in-your-face vocals, crystal-clear acoustic guitars, fat, solid bass guitar, dynamic acoustic piano, cracking snare, punchy bass, huge MPC tracks, and more.

Enhance your signal path
The Presonus Studio Channel was designed to outperform preamplifiers that are built-in to most recording interfaces and affordable mixers. Add a VCA-based compressor and studio-grade equalizer to the class A tube preamp and you get not only big, fat, tube tonality but also complete control of your tone and sounds. Since much of the recording process is accomplished one track at a time, you need a signal path that can deliver a variety of high quality tones and sounds, which is why the Studio Channel is a prime tool for any studio.

Class A Tube Preamplifier
The Studio Channel has everything needed to deliver big tone. The preamplifier stage of the Studio Channel is based on the award-winning BlueTube preamplifier with a high-output 12AX7 vacuum tube operating on voltages higher than other preamplifiers in its class. It delivers high headroom and big tone. Dual control Gain and Tube Drive enables a wide range of sounds from transparent and clear to edgy and overdriven.

Full-Featured VCA Compressor
The compressor in the channel strip is a fully variable ultra-fast and smooth VCA-based circuit with all of the controls needed for a wide-range of compression settings: ratio, threshold, attack, release, and gain make up. The VCA-based compressor is known for musicality as well as ultra fast attack with the ability to tame the fastest transients. From slap bass, to snare drum, to vocals, the Studio Channel's compressor stage allows you to record as hot as needed without clipping giving you total dynamic control.

Three-Band Parametric EQ
The equalizer in the PreSonus Studio Channel is like a Swiss Army pocket knife, with the ability to carve out unwanted frequencies as well as tailor your tone to enhance your sound. The custom-designed amplifiers in the EQ deliver sweet-sounding gain/cut for ultra smooth highs, deep, solid lows, and clear midrange. The mid-band of the EQ section has variable Q for controlling the width around the center point of the selected frequency. High and low frequency bands give you the option for selecting peak/dip or shelving frequencies.

Fully Nice!

By Noah Montena

from Syracuse, NY

So good, I bought a second. As with most things from PreSonus, the Studio Channel is dripping with features, but also has good build and audio quality. A lot of little touches, like an instrument jack on front for, well...instruments, a big VU meter, and the ability to switch the low and high EQ individually from parametric (or notch) to shelving add to the already solid list of specs for this compact (1U) piece of gear. I/O is yet more versatile on the back panel, with a choice of line or XLR input, and either XLR or TRS output. It is quiet, and does not get terribly hot (perhaps these are the reasons why PreSonus chose to use their standard external 16V/1A AC power wart rather than an internal mains supply), and it has a nice, not-too-flashy dark blue bezel with sturdy anodized aluminum knobs, so no special care or gentle handling are needed for racking, other than making room for the wart on your power strip. Knob movement is smooth and stiff, so you aren't likely to accidentally change a carefully selected setting with the careless brush of a sleeve. In a very dark studio, indicator lights from some buttons can bleed to the next, but if you have a TubePre or a BlueTube you probably already are used to double-checking your 48V from the height of the button before you plug in that ribbon anyway. Considering how much other rackmount channel strips, like the Grace M103, or lunchboxes go for, there really is no comparison in this price range.

Presonus channel strip

By Michael DeMichele

from Mechanicsburg PA

This is one of the best channel strips in the box you can buy. Put on any mic and add the phantom power(when needed), compressor(great for vocal tracts) and parametric EQ. Then dial in how much real tube you want to warm things up and your(good) home studio mic sounds great!!!! Blows the berringer ultragain (which I traded in) out of the water. Forget about the duel imput and 1/2 price of the Berringer-don't make the 1st mistake I did. Go for the presonus-you will not be diappointed. This is one of the best studio tools I have bought recently. FYI I paired this with the Blue encore 200 for and awesome vocal performance.

Great Tool!

By Joe

from Philadelphia, PA

I purchased this to use as an instrumental tube preamp. I'll use it live next to my instrument or mic, or I'll use it in a studio setting. It's a very convenient item because a preamp, EQ, and compressor are all combined into one strip. My only two dislikes are the flimsy push/release buttons and it's LACK of a standard three prong power chord that are used by most professional electronics. Aside from those two complaints, this item does everything it claims to; and it does so very well!

Excellent product!

By S. Clark

from Nutley, NJ

This preamp really has a great sound and useable features. The first song I recorded was an acoustic guitar piece with a doubled vocal to test it out. Right out of the box all settings were halfway up so I left it that way and recorded with an Oktava 319. It came out better than anything from my home studio to date, hands down! I was using an Art Tube Pac which wasn't bad, but this is the next level for sure. After this are the Avalon's and UA's when I can afford it.

Excellent purchase

By aaeea

from California

This is my first preamp purchase. I had been using the built-in preamp in my M-Audio fasttrack pro audio interface previously. I had inputs connected to Shure 57s which are used to mic my amp. My problem was that the amplification was turned to max and with the mic placed at distances away from the cloth, I couldn't get any dynamic range for my DAW. Place the mic too close, and the sound goes very muddy. The sound coming out of this tube unit is so warm, and the recording quality was immediately noticeable. It's small enough to be on my desk. Having a built-in compressor also helps out a lot when I record anything clean (with flanger sometimes). Some boss pedals tend to make the sounds clip quite easily, and the compression prevents that. It's also great that it can be a soft-knee. Very happy about the price and the purchase since it solved a lot of my problems while also providing the warm tone and maintaining all the nuances without noticeable dirt. Typically preamps costs way more, but this fits my price range prefectly.

Buy the best! Forget the Rest!

By Mark

from Kansas City

Simply put: Versatile, no noise, and downright awesome! And the warmth of a tube. I will be buying several more in the very near future. I also own the PreSonus Firestudio Project which is another excellent piece of gear which can be chained with up to 4 other units. These guys know how to build some of the best gear out there; Period!!!
