Overview

The PreSonus AudioBox USB 2x2 USB recording system is an excellent solution for achieving high-quality, professional-sounding recordings no matter where you are. The AudioBox USB is a USB bus-powered audio recording interface loaded with 2 microphone/instrument inputs with 48V phantom power, 2 balanced TRS outputs, and MIDI I/O so you can stay portable without sacrificing your sound. The AudioBox USB also comes with Studio One Artist music creation and production software which has the same platform and intuitive interface as Studio One Pro but with an unlimited track count so you can start recording right out of the box.

PreSonus Audio has won numerous awards for designing quality microphone preamplifiers for all price levels. The AudioBox USB is loaded with preamps that deliver high headroom, low noise, and high gain to give you pure, full, and rich sound. Most USB recording devices operate at a 16-bit sample rate and use converters with dynamic ranges of less than 90dB which gives you a pinched and relatively small sound. The AudioBox USB, however, uses professional-grade analog to digital converters with a dynamic range of 102dB and 24-bit sample rate so that the digital conversion is big, quiet, and musical, making it one of the best sounding USB bus-powered interface on the market.

The AudioBox USB is bus-powered giving you the flexibility you need with no wall warts, line lumps, or power cables. Just plug in to a powered USB port and you are ready to record. The AudioBox USB is housed in an all-metal chassis with metal knobs able to withstand the rigors of travel and your touring adventures. Just toss the AudioBox USB in your laptop bag and mobilize your music creation and production. Whether you're recording your shows, creating a mix on the plane, or writing songs in your hotel room, the AudioBox is ready to go.

I just got a new macbook (yes the kind that does not have a firewire port). Although I love my computer, my Presonus Inspire 1394 was now obsolete. I received my Audiobox a few days ago and I really could not be more satisfied with the results. Most people say you should buy a firewire interface because USB is slower and the mic preamps are not up to par. I actually think the Audiobox sounds better than the Inspire! It was quick and easy to set up, works great with garageband, and there is very little 'hum' on the recordings (a problem I struggled with on my Inspire). The Audiobox makes recording fast and easy so you can focus on what you are playing instead of complications with the interface.

The product worked fairly well for the first couple months. The recording quality was fine, but then it started producing such a large amount of bqckground noise that the intended recording could hardely be made out in playback. I called the company (Presonus) for support and I spent a very long time on hold before going through a long diagnosis process before learning that I had to ship the unit in for repairs. I did that, and over a month later the unit came back and had even worse problems. It would not be recognized by any computer. I jumped through numerous hoops on online support tickets as the Presonus support staff made ineffective suggestions for remedying the problems. I ended up having to ship it in again. It came back back still with the same problems, and I had to ship it in a third time. It came back, still without the ability to be revognized by any computer. I went through the whole process over again, and once again had the unit returned to me, not in working order. I jumped through hoops trying to get the Audiobox repaired for over 6 months without receiving a successful repair. In that time I spent quite a bit of money shipping the box across the country several times for repairs. I do not recommend purchasing the AudioBox USB or any other Presonus Product.

Be sure to know your computer

Comments about Presonus AudioBox USB 2X2 USB Recording System:

Don't make the mistake I made and purchase it and then realize, duh, you have a 64-bit Vista system. Not good when you don't remember your own computer specs. I'm having to take it back and get a Firebox. Presonus told me that there are no plans on developing drivers for a 64-bit system for Audiobox. This looks like a great product that looks to be easy to use once you can figure out how to set it up.

Don't buy if you're OS is Vista

        By Mike

Comments about Presonus AudioBox USB 2X2 USB Recording System:

This does not work with Vista 64 at all. Vista 32 (in some cases) works, but not every case. After installing EVERY available driver ever made for this device for my Vista 32 bit machine, it still doesn't work. There is a 3rd party ASIO (Audio Stream In/Out) that works in SOME cases (not all). The major problem is that the drivers weren't correctly built for Vista. In some cases the drivers will show to be installed correctly, but the device will not allow for audio streaming into the computer. This has been an known issue since Sept 2008 and there is still no absolute fix provided by PreSonus. This is something Presonus even states on their tech support site. This issue is also known in Win7, but not as drastic. So if you're OS is Vista (both 32 and 64) or WIN 7, I highly recommend trying something different than this product.

Comments about Presonus AudioBox USB 2X2 USB Recording System:

I also own the Firepod that I use with my G5 tower. I needed something small and portable to use with my MacBook Pro and since Presonus and Mac are made for each other with never a glitch, never a driver to install or upgrade, plug and play, easy to use - it's a no brainer. It's small, lightweight, sounds great, works all the time. It has phantom power, XLR, TRS, 1/4" MIDI, and is powered by USB. How simple is that?

Comments about Presonus AudioBox USB 2X2 USB Recording System:

I bought this interface for my live rig. Operating a laptop with plugs. CPU usage absolutly had to as minimul as possible. No complaints about this unit. USB powered. Drivers are very non-parasitic to the CPU usage. MIDI in and out is a very convienient feature. Very pleased. I have a Presonus 1394 in the studio that I've been using for about 8 months now and its been flawless. Presonus makes good products, you just have to pay attenion to the system requirements before you buy.

Comments about Presonus AudioBox USB 2X2 USB Recording System:

Well hopefully my experience with the Audiobox isn't typical. I'd hate to think this happened to many others. So I plug a mic into it. Sounds great, crystal clear. Problem is the signal I get from plugging in a line level instrument (i.e. guitar, keyboard, etc.) is noisy. Sure I get a signal but there's this annoying background noise to go with it. Of course I tried balanced trs cables but nada. Contacted Presonus tech support. They say, & I quote: "well if you're running a line level signal into a balanced input you will get some noise". What!? You mean to tell me this is normal? It's not normal because I've NEVER experienced this issue with ANY other interface. I've owned presonus units before & loved them. I expected to love the Audiobox too but no, not at all. I still respect Presonus, don't get me wrong. As I said, maybe it was just my particular Audiobox but after doing a bit of research I'm not so sure. I turned around & got a Line6 UX2..cringe..but you know what? It puts the Audiobox to shame & it's totally worth the extra 50 bucks. Bottom line folks, spend a little more cash or take your chances. It's your choice.

Comments about Presonus AudioBox USB 2X2 USB Recording System:

This unit works Great once it is set up. It is a little tricky getting it set up correctly under Vista, but once set up, no problems at all. The function of the Mixer knob is not well explained. It doesn't take too much playing around to figure it out though. Performance is amazing. The solid metal enclosure certainly helps prevent stray noise pickup. Overall a Great Buy!

I just doesn't work. I managed to have it returned to Presonus, my contact there was very helpful, received my unit even sent from another country direct from user, but it was avaliated as "normal"and returned. It doesn't work !!! I keep having that noise from latency, or bad driver. and check this: Toshiba Notebok, Turion x2, 2 gigs RAM AND Macbook Pro 17", Intel with 2 gigs RAM. It doesn't work with any. I'm pretty sure I've done it all righ, i'm no new to DAWs... I'm pretty dissapointted with this. Just can't say anything good out of it.

Needed an external audio interface with balanced outputs to hook up to my BX5A's. Got the Win7 64-bit drivers from Presonus' website and after installing, all it took was a quick reboot to finish. Very simple. Runs awesome in FL Studio and for general listening on the pc. At first I thought I wasn't gonna be able to use my Logitech z2300 sub, but all I had to do was connect it to the headphones output and it's now working, giving me perfect control of the bass and the studio monitors. The box itself is metal rather than plastic which is great. Feels very sturdy. The knobs also have a nice feel to them Overall, it's nice.

Works on Windows 7 x64 Pro

          By Brennan

          from Iowa City, IA

Comments about Presonus AudioBox USB 2X2 USB Recording System:

I just wanted to let people know that this DOES work on Windows 7 64-bit, using the 64-bit driver on Presonus' website. It is kind of a pain to get the software and drivers working, but once you do it works very well. A lot of people on recording forums talk about using an alternative driver called "ASIO4ALL" but I was never able to get that working. It works fine with the presonus drivers and Cubase LE4 and I have since upgraded to Cubase 5, where it works equally well. You might have to play around with installing/uninstalling/installing drivers to get it to work but the price is worth it.

Yes, it works with Windows 7 64 bit

          By DrTom

          from Phoenix, AZ

Comments about Presonus AudioBox USB 2X2 USB Recording System:

It finally happened when I moved to Windows 7 and my old Fast Track with Sessions didn't work any more. As it turned out, very little in the area of USB recording interfaces actually worked with Windows 7 and the Presonus' products seemed to be just about the only thing out there that would. Well, sort of. There were a lot of comments on forums and reviews stating that other, more experienced, users than I had a terrible time getting it to work. Perhaps I was lucky. Instead of using the drivers included in with the box, I downloaded the driver for Windows 7, 64-bit from Presonus' website, as well as Studio One. It worked wonderfully the first time out. The downside is that, while Studio One is fairly intuitive, it's not quite as user friendly as M-Audio's Session.

Comments about Presonus AudioBox USB 2X2 USB Recording System:

Sorry I just thought of some other good things about this product. It has ZERO LATENCY ISSUES! :D Which is really good. So it records what is played and doesn't throw it off timing. And I was also working on a project last night and decided that if you record your keyboard , or whatever it is, quieter, then double it and boost the volume in your DAW, You get a more professional sound. So all in all it just takes some tweaking, then once you figure it all out it'll sound good.

Comments about Presonus AudioBox USB 2X2 USB Recording System:

I purchased a Yamaha keyboard. I connected the keyboard output to the two inputs of the Audiobox USB using a TRS to split TS cable. I set the output of the keyboard about half volume and then adjusted the gain of the Audiobox USB to keep the clip lights off. I then connected speakers to the output of the Audiobox USB and headphones to the headphone connector of the Audiobox USB. The Audiobox USB and the keyboard are also connected to a laptop for recording and playback.

This worked well for a couple of months. I am able to hear Youtube and the keyboard simultaneously, and select whether to listen through the headphones or speakers or both. I can my DAW to/from the keyboard through MIDI over USB. It is a nice, clean solution to audio / MIDI routing.

Now I am hearing cracks and pops through the headphones from the Audiobox USB. I substituted headphones to no avail. I varied the buffer size but could not eliminate the pops. I searched the Presonus knowledgebase and found an excellent article for removing and re-installing the driver (as one way to eliminate the pops). I performed the procedure but the pops are still there.

I continued to search the knowledgebase and found another article that states that the inputs to the Audiobox USB should NEVER be used as line inputs. Damage could result. Nowhere on the Audiobox USB is this stated and I do not believe it is stated in any documentation that came with the Audiobox USB.

So, I have used the Audiobox USB in a manner forbidden by the manufacturer so my warranty is void. A repair would cost as much as the box itself. Replacement is the only option.

If you are planning on using line level outputs, DO NOT use the Audiobox USB. There are several comparably priced options (Alesys IO2/ M-Audio M-Track for example) that accept line level inputs. Sadly, I own an M-Track and could have easily used it in place of the Audiobox USB.

Look carefully at your interface and beware of assumptions. Mice cost me.

Installation of drivers for PC w/XP OS was a three hour challenge. Included CD drivers didnt install at all in three attempts, downloaded drivers finally installed after four attempts. Cant explain why the fourth attempt worked.

This recorder is very good and it works well with my computer (toshiba windows vista). I also wanted to mention that this recorder does come with "studio 1," a recording system that works off your computer. You plug the recorder in and open stuidio 1 and you can record. So, weah, this is a good recorder.

            plug & play in Linux

Bought this to use with my little netbook, the original Asus EeePC 701 4G, currently running Ubuntu 10 and using Audacity to record. Plugged it in, went into system settings, found and selected Presonus Audiobox for both input and output and it works. I am using it with a little Behringer Xenyx mixer; I plan to use it later using only a mic for portability. It records fine, but my old netbook is deadly slow converting the Audacity file to MP3 for export - will plan to do that on my desktop. Might be time to upgrade to a netbook using one of the later Atom processors.
