Now that's power!

XMAX Class A Preamplifiers
StudioLive includes sixteen custom-designed high-voltage, discrete, XMAX Class A microphone preamplifiers for all types of microphones. The job of a microphone preamplifier is to boost microphone level signals to line level so that the signal can be converted from analog to digital. This mic to line boost is generally a preamplification of over 400 times the voltage of the original mic level signal. This preamplification stage is one of the most important stages that the signal will go through before converted to digital, and is why a high performance preamplifier is important to achieving great results.

All XMAX preamplifiers are built with the same three elements: • High Voltage — The XMAX preamplifier runs on power rails of 30V. Most off the shelf op amp based designs run on power rails of 10V to 18V. Higher voltage power rails deliver more headroom, deeper lows, smoother highs and an overall fuller sound. .
• Discrete — No op amps. Only transistors, resistors and capacitors. Op amps add noise, coloration and harshness to a signal. Discrete designs deliver ultra low noise and transparency.
• Class A — When a circuit is running in Class A mode the circuit is always in an "on" state operating at its optimal voltage requirements. Class A mode has zero crossover distortion and delivers purer, clearer and more musical sonics than class A/B designs which are found in most op-amp circuits.

The net result of the XMAX preamp design is high headroom, low noise, wide dynamic range and wide frequency range, and most importantly, musicality and transparency — smooth highs, solid deep lows, and everything in between.

NEW REVIEW - Amazing

I've set up 6 different studios in the last few years. This is the best controller, preamp, and A>D Converter out there for the money. It's clean and intuitive. It's been perfect for recording live productions and concerts! Can't beat it.

The answer to my prayers...

As a gigging musician that also runs sound for the band, this mixer is a godsend. Intuitive and feature filled. I have since thrown my side rack away. On top of that, the preamps sound awesome, with headroom for days. I've only had it for a week and I don't know how I lived without it. I haven't even used the recording software yet!

Perfect for a band that gigs

I bought the StudioLive for several reasons. I play in a gigging band and we wanted the ability to hit one button and recall our settings from different clubs. The StudioLive delivered this AND also has given us the ability to record any rehearsal or gig with literally 2 button clicks. I was skeptical when I read about how easy it is to record, but it really is that easy. The last thing that has been great is having a compressor, gate and sweepable eq for every channel. We are even using the fatchannel to eq our monitors. So far we are loving this board and I am glad that I bought it.

And I thought I was living before...

Wow, where to start, I've owned this board for about 2 months and have come to the conclusion that I just didn't know how good sound could be without a rack full of gear. I'm using this for FoH sound in a youth facility, also recording all services live, and doubling as a studio mixer to lay down tracks. 1) Amazing preamps, they sound great recording at least as good as previous presonus problems and better than the digi003 IMHO. 2) Racks full of onboard gear easy to customize for your studio/live use, save, copy, delete start from scratch, use presets, digital effects, they thought of everything with this board. Chances are if it's not included there will be a firmware update for it soon. 3) Can link up to 4 Studio Live consoles (Plus they have a metal piece that holds them together to make it 'feel' like 1 console) this is a truely innovative design, record up to 32 tracks simultaneously @ 44.1k DAWS standard will dump right into your favorite audio suite. 4) Generous 16 XLR inputs, 6 Aux Sends, plus 2 built in Effects Sends, 2 Stereo Aux Returns for additional effects/processing, 4 Sub Groups, Tape in and out great for MP3 hook-up, induvidual firewire returns to nearly anything on the board so if you want to sequence tracks it's a snap. I have no doubt this board will be a favorite ammong artists/sound engineers for years to come, there is not another board that can compete as far as sound quality, to features, to price ratio. The best part is it's 98% digital so every setting can be saved for multiple artists/senerio setups, it even shows you where the faders and knobs should be. And presonus has noted that the board is completly independent from the recording interface so there is no reason to ever worry about a 'computer problem' killing your FoH sound.
