Professional recording quality, desktop size.

The PreSonus HP4 Discrete 4-Channel Headphone Amp features 4 headphone outputs on the front panel, each with its own volume, and 150mW of amplification per channel-extremely loud output with a low -98dB noise floor. It also allows control over control room monitors with a separate volume knob that can be muted using the Monitor Mute button. 1/3 rackspace. Accepts balanced/unbalanced inputs and outputs (1/4" TRS). Input can either be set to stereo or mono (the mono selector button on the front channel simply copies both inputs to both sides). Powered by an external wall-mounted supply.

The HP4 represents a tremendous value as echoed by this email received by PreSonus:

"To my amazement, your HP4 sounded as good as both of my hi-fi stereo heaphone amps. Very very clean and loud. I can't believe you put 150 mw per channel, @52 ohms, to four headphone outputs and offer such a quality unit for very little over $100." (M. Burke via email)

I purchased this product after recording hassles during numerous sessions. Not only did I need to have the mix in more than one set of headphones, but I also needed a quick and easy way to mute my monitors for tracking, then unmute them for playback and mixing/editing. This little unit did all of the above and did it with remarkably quiet channels. With a decently loud input source (i.e. a mixer or other) this unit possesses the power to be heard over drums and guitars combined and still have notably low self-noise. However, the noise factor depends on the noise produced by the input source as well. The HP4 does a great job of amplifying everything that comes in, and in some cases, that means hiss if your running it out of a crappy mixer. The only thing I would change about this unit is its lack of rackmount ears, however, it does say on the box that it will fit "into a universal rack tray space.." I still wish that It would mount into a rack. Even if the rack mount ears were 7" long each, I would still like the option, and I'd be willing to pay 10 more dollars to have them. Overall, this is a great product and it has made practices and sessions 10 times more efficient than they were. I'm not sure if I could ask any more (besides rack ears) for $99.00! Nice Job Presonus!

  • Exactly what I needed

Features: This little amp is an excellent value. Worked perfectly and was easy to set up. The volume controls feel pro and this little dog puts out! Amazing volume and quality sound at all levels. You cannot turn a headphone channel up all the way, and I tried several sets of cans - Yamaha, Sony, Sennheiser. They all sounded better through this amp than the console headphone outs. Much more power. The drummer's cans for once were loud enough. Very handy feature with the monitor gain and mute switch. No accidental ear-blasts if you drive your monitors with it. Could use an on/off switch, but most of us use line conditioners, right? The price is amazing for the value. It will also cascade with additional HP-4's, so you are not future-limited. Quality & reliability: I have only had this for a few days. It is all metal construction, except for the rear jacks, but overall looks and feels well-made. The gain pots have a pro feel, excellent granularity. I heard no distortion, hum, or noise whatsoever. Very good sound quality. No cheap op-amps in this gear. It also runs quite cool, even after hours of session work, driving four cans. Look & Feel. I would prefer an actual half/rack unit, but it is pre-drilled on the bottom for rack adapators. You may want to desk or shelf mount, which it will do well. Nice color mix. It looks cool in my rack, even with all-black gear. Guitar Center had the best price, and they had it in stock. Go get one.

  • Does what it says it does

OK....I just got this plugged up and only used it an hour so far but as long as it doesn't break it's going to work out great....It is very well made out of metal instead of plastic everything...A problem I've had in the past is getting my AKG headphones loud enough...No more!....I had it turned up 3 quarters and I couldn't stand it any louder if I wanted to...I think if someone would listen full blast it would probably cause hearing loss so if your looking for volume...This is it...The sound quality is very good and I couldn't tell a difference with this in the loop coming out the monitors or headphones...It kept the same clarity with no loss....I remember many years ago, I had a rolls unit and it would suck all the highs and lows out of the signal leaving you with all mids....Not so with this little box...The monitor mute button is going to be extremely handy...When ready to record another track, simply push the button to mute the monitors....I didn't try the mono button but I'm sure it works just fine...Finally shout out to GC-Rockville...Those guys go above and beyond!
