Professional recording quality, desktop size.

The PreSonus HP4 Discrete 4-Channel Headphone Amp features 4 headphone outputs on the front panel, each with its own volume, and 150mW of amplification per channel—extremely loud output with a low -98dB noise floor. It also allows control over control room monitors with a separate volume knob that can be muted using the Monitor Mute button. 1/3 rackspace. Accepts balanced/unbalanced inputs and outputs (1/4" TRS). Input can either be set to stereo or mono (the mono selector button on the front channel simply copies both inputs to both sides). Powered by an external wall-mounted supply. The HP4 represents a tremendous value as echoed by this email received by PreSonus:"To my amazement, your HP4 sounded as good as both of my hi-fi stereo heaphone amps. Very very clean and loud. I can't believe you put 150 mw per channel, @52 ohms, to four headphone outputs and offer such a quality unit for very little over $100." (M. Burke via email)

I purchased this product after recording hassles during numerous sessions. Not only did I need to have the mix in more than one set of headphones, but I also needed a quick and easy way to mute my monitors for tracking, then unmute them for playback and mixing/editing. This little unit did all of the above and did it with remarkably quiet channels. With a decently loud input source (i.e. a mixer or other) this unit possesses the power to be heard over drums and guitars combined and still have notably low self-noise. However, the noise factor depends on the noise produced by the input source as well. The HP4 does a great job of amplifying everything that comes in, and in some cases, that means hiss if your running it out of a crappy mixer. The only thing I would change about this unit is its lack of rackmount ears, however, it does say on the box that it will fit "into a universal rack tray space.." I still wish that It would mount into a rack. Even if the rack mount ears were 7" long each, I would still like the option, and I'd be willing to pay 10 more dollars to have them. Overall, this is a great product and it has made practices and sessions 10 times more efficient than they were. I'm not sure if I could ask any more (besides rack ears) for $99.00! Nice Job Presonus!

  • Headphone Amp

As reviewed by DSDub on 11/1/2006

This little unit works great for home studios. I don't have a "control room", so I don't want the mics picking up the monitors. With this headphone amp, the musicians can record while listening to the mix through headphones and each can have their own level. Sound quality is good, and this thing can get LOUD. Great buy!

  • Smooth, Forward, Airy and loud.

As reviewed by benjamin smith on 12/30/2011

I bought this for my project studio. Works great for years now. The sound is just as advertised, no more no less. I have AKG K44 and Sony MDR something. The headphones are more uncomfortable and will hurt your head before you tire of listening to this amp. SOUND: Its FORWARD, clean, clear, airy. I want to get some Grado's RS1000 and try a truly hi end amp, to see if there is any difference. Sounds better than most ipods or cd player. More powerful than all the cans I have. Compared to my Harmon Kardon 3490 Reference receiver HP4 is super forward, and out of the way and has a lot less bass response. The bass is there, and it's clear bass but it's not powerful at all or particularly well defined. The highs are detailed and airy. Mids are smooth and detailed. It won't make you say, "that sounds awesome" it's more of "thats cool, sounds good". I would buy it again although I would love to listen to some other "high end" headphone amps first.
