I opted for the Presonus Firebox over the larger, more expensive Firepod as I am just setting up my studio and I am very pleased with its overall performance. Easy setup, no problems with compatibility. I originally thought I would just use a BLUE Snowball and not have to get an interface, but my experience with a Mac G5 and Logic Pro was that the Snowball didn't jive with my system. The Firebox, however, gets along fine with my gear. They chat, have tea...they're buds. Anyway, the preamps and 48V phantom power eliminate the need for separate power supplies, the signal is clean, and the product is reliable. Not to mention that if you do decide to upgrade to the Firepod (I mean let's face it--you're not recording drums with this anytime soon), you can link them up and get more inputs. Great product, great value, especially for smaller studios.
I bought my firebox a little over a year ago. Since then it's been my constant companion both on stage and while recording, be it in my home studio or on location. It has never let me down, has held up, shows practically no signs of wear, and gives me the confidence to do what I do musically anywhere, at any time.
My brother in law just went on a 4 week tour with this thing as his front end. No problems whatsoever. This was after borrowing it (of and on)for the previous 4 months to record his album. You can hear exactly what the firebox sounds like at "topher blair" at myspace music. I've owned presonus tube pre, and their little compressor, and have never had a problem. If this thing ever kicks the bucket I'll get either this or that other new compact presonus interface. I'll probably shop around first (like I always do) but I can't put a price on the confidence I've developed in their products.
I whole heartedly recommend any presonus gear (not affiliated with them in any way) and especially the firebox.
I had been looking at the firebox's big brother, the firepod, since it was first announced. I held off because I didn't need all those preamps. Since I record alone, a pair of mic inputs and some line inputs were all I needed.
Luckily presonus came out with the firebox. Small, self powered, and amazingly high quality, it does everything I need in a small package.Preamps are clean, the headphone out packs plenty of punch for every headphone, and flexible routing options make it a breeze to use. I use the included firebox mixer software to quickly switch between my computer speakers to studio monitors based on what I want to hear.
Zero latency monitoring is handy, but I end up using it most with reason and doing my audio recording with a digital multitrack (just personal preference). With the firebox I can hook them together when I want to combine the guitar tracks and midi tracks from reason.
My only complaint: Switching the S/PDIF to match word clock with another wasn't clearly explained in the manual, but a quick call to presonus support solved the problem in a minute.
