Comments about Pork Pie Pig Iron Snare Drum:

While I'm no longer a professional musician anymore, I know good stuff when I play it. For my style of playing, this drum is every bit as good as the Supraphonics and Tama King Beats of old, and in some ways, a bit better. It has the top end crack and presence of the a fore mentioned drums, plus a good brass-type low end too. Yes, in some tunings, it has a bit of ring, but that ring will give presence when played with a full ensemble, even when mic'ed. It will give you the "wet" sound easily at lower tunings, or the Bonham-esque crack at higher tunings. A truly versatile and great sounding drum. I had to overcome a couple prejudices when I bought this drum, in other words, ten lugs and die-cast hoops. I still might try die cast hoops, but the 8 lugs are just fine. I can beat the snot out of it, and it stays in tune.
The service from Guitar center was excellent. I live in Alaska where shipping issues are common, but I can set my watch by the service and delivery time I receive from Guitar Center. This includes new gear(like this purchase) or used gear as well. I consistently get large, and disparately complex orders, all at the same time, even when the origins of the products are all over the country. Kudos to the folks at Guitar Center!

Comments about Pork Pie Pig Iron Snare Drum:

Pork Pie nailed this one, big time! I'm a drummer of some 40 years of experience, playing many varied styles. When tuned to its "voice," this drum can be "wet," "crisp," or "cracking;' Plus anything in between. Having owned Ludwig Supraphonics, Tama "King Beats," among others; this drum (tone wise) is easily is in the same company. In other words, a full toned, responsive snare drum. Now, the down side: this drum(to my ear) could use die cast hoops, and 10 instead of 8 lugs. This is a prejudice on my part, and in no way should deter one from buying this great snare.
My order from Guitar Center was processed and shipped quickly, which is a major advantage where I live(Alaska). I get a ton of new and used gear from them. Great store(s) and service.

Comments about Pork Pie Pig Iron Snare Drum:

This is an excellent snare drum. Not only for the money, but excellent in general, as this snare drum is so versatile. I've had it for a few days, and the playability and tone in most tunings is exceptional. Falling somewhere between an aluminum/steel shell, and a brass shell, the sound seems to get the best of both worlds. Good "crack" sound, plus the "smoothness" one sees in a brass drum. Side sticking is dry, but cutting. Yes, it has overtones, but overtones really mix in well to an ensemble setting. As with most drums( with or without mics) it sounds too resonant from where the drummer sits, however, when you mix it with a band, or while soloing, it has a full, rich and expressive tone at most tunings. It is every bit as good as the Ludwig Supra Phonics and the Tama King Beats I've owned over the last 40 years. Yes, it made that big of an impression to me. The drum has good build quality, and excellent finish quality. I did not choose the tin plate finish, as I fell in love with the "black chrome effect" of the polished cast iron. Another thing I love about this snare is its simplicity. This drum is easy to tune, and easy to adjust the snare wire tension.
Now,for the downside. This drum should have(by my sensibilities at least) 10 lugs and die cast hoops. Of course, that would up the price by a couple of c-notes, so I get why Pork Pie did what they did. Die cast hoops on this drum would give it a more focused tone and sensitivity. 10 lugs would make a great drum exceptional, but this is just nit picking on my part. This is why I gave the drum 4 stars, not because of anything Pork Pie did, but my own sensibilities honed over the years. Having said all that, the stock drum is a freakin' BEAST. Even with the "stock" heads, this drum just drips tone.
Ok, as far as the sale with Guitar Center is concerned: The sale was great. Easy to order, easy to track, and the drum arrived on time. I live in Alaska, so shipping can be an issue with most, but not here. Excellent.
