Makes changing strings a breeze.

The Planet Waves Auto-Trim Tuning Machines automatically cut off excess string while you tune up your guitar. An individual string clamp holds the string tightly in the tuner, so there's no need for multiple wraps around the tuning post. A precision 18:1 gear ratio provides smooth, exact tuning, while virtually eliminating backlash and slippage.

The rugged, die-cast outer casing houses precision 18:1 bevel and worm gears, a string clamp, and a hardened-steel wire cutter. Restringing has never been easier: simply insert the string, tighten the clamp, and tune up. The Auto-Trim Tuning Machine does the rest.

  • Very Nice

As reviewed by Christopher Nelson on 11/14/2010

I love these things! I was a little skeptical based on some of the other reviews, but I must say I am more than pleasantly surprised. I fully expect designs similar to this will become the standard in the future. I decided to put them on my Martin OMC-1E. They didn't fit the stock holes on that guitar, so I had to do a slight modification using a Dremel sanding bit to make the holes a uniform diameter, but that will surely vary from guitar to guitar. Stringing the guitar with these babies installed is a cinch, but the included instructions leave a few things lacking. To clear up that and some of the issues stated in previous reviews, these are the steps I use. I'm yet to have any issues using this technique. 1.) Insert the strings in the bridge and insert the bridge pins. 2.) Tug each string toward the nut to make sure they are seated snug in the bridge with no slippage. 3.) Turn all of the machines so that the side with the silver metal bump is facing the neck. 4.) For each of the strings, insert the string into it's assigned tuning peg through the side with the metal bump. The direction is important. Pull the string all the way through until it is straightened. You don't have to leave slack like you do on normal tuning machines. 5.) IT IS VERY IMPORTANT NOT TO UNDER-TIGHTEN THE STRING HOLDER KNOB. Tighten the string holder knob to lock the string in place. Tighten it as tight as you can with your fingers and pull the string back toward the bridge to test for any slippage. I am able to get it tight enough with my fingers, but as a previous poster said, you might also consider using pliers to give yourself a bit more leverage. You don't have to kill it, but you do need to make them nice and snug so the string cannot slip out. 6.) Turn the tuning knob to start tuning the string. Once it reaches the cutting edge the string will be cut very easily. 7.) Once the string is cut, TIGHTEN THE STRING HOLDER SCREW AGAIN! Some of the resistance is released once the cut happens and you'll be able to tighten it a little bit more. I believe this is probably the root of the problems others have had with string slippage. 8.) After you have all of the strings in and cut, tune all of the strings up to full tension. After you've done it once you will be able to change all of your strings in a couple of minutes.

  • Easy string changes

As reviewed by Jess T. on 4/27/2010

Strings changes are so much easier and quicker with these things and they even make tuning easier and more precise. I put them on every guitar I own.

  • Good Stuff

As reviewed by ExplorerBoy97 on 4/10/2007

I like the Gotohs and Sperzals I have and decided to give these a try on Peavey I own. Nice tuners. They are easy to install, but a tad bit tricky to get the cut feature to behave at first - not a big deal to get over. The 18-1 ratio is nice. I'm not sure these hold a tune better than my other tuners, but since I don't use trem, I can't really offer an opion on that.
