I could not find a more versatile amp. Not only do I use this with my 6 string Epiphone electric but I've also used my Fender Precision bass and my Fender acoustic/electric. Extremely reliable, clean sound and the fact that I don't have to look for an outlet except to charge the battery is incredible. The volume is also incredible, who knew you could get this much sound out of such a little and lightweight amp. Wish I would have bought this years ago.

I've heard other harmonica players talk favorably about the smaller pignose amp. But I needed something bigger. I was looking for an amp that I could use with a wide range of instruments and microphones in settings where there is little or no AC power available. So far, the battery has worked well. But the saying "you get what you pay for" comes to mind with this inexpensive amp. The disappointment started when I opened the box. As I removed it from the package I noticed that the vinyl skin on the back was peeling loose at the seams. Perhaps a little glue will take care of this. The first time I played it I noticed a rattle in the speaker. At first I thought the speaker was blown. It turns out that the metal grill covering the speaker is where the rattle is coming from. The amp hums when used in ungrounded locations. But the battery option takes care of that. Aside from the problems with quality there are some design issues that I should have thought about before I purchased this amp. The worst of these is the location of the controls. Because all of the controls are at the bottom of the front of the amp I find it necessary to get it off of the floor by placing it on an amp stand or stool. Otherwise the controls are hard to reach and harder to see. If I were asked to redesign this amp I would 1.) move the controls to the top, 2.) use a 12 inch speaker, 3.) rethink the grill on the front, and 4.)replace the vinyl covering with something that won't peel away after a few years. In the end, I will probably wind up doing a little repair work on this amp and try live with it. At least it came with a lot of stickers.

Great potential, failed to deliver

By HeinekenPete

Pros

  • Portable

Cons

  • Simply never worked

Best Uses

  • Playing out on the patio or at the park

Comments about Pignose Hog 30 Amp:

...bought the Hog-30 a few years ago intending to use for practice or playing away from an electric outlet. Noodled with it for a few minutes, then set it aside a few months. For a while it worked when plugged in, but wouldn't hold a charge. Again set it aside. Next time it wouldn't play either way. Took it a part, replaced the batteries, and still got nothing. Basicly brand-new, it now sits in storage.
So while it had good potential, (portable, light weight) it basicly never worked past the first 10 minutes. Was expecting better quality from Pignose. Back to the drawing board guys...?

By Disappointed

Comments about Pignose Hog 30 Amp:

I purchased this from Musician's Friend and it doesn't work- won't even turn on. I asked for a replacement and they said they could replace it for another 50 bones. No thank you! Never going to buy anything for musicians friend again. Be warned!

Comments about Pignose Hog 30 Amp:

Had it over 3 months now, so it's time to review. Decent tone and it can be turned up to play along with stereo or TV; tone at low vol is fine. Not a tone monster but it did well on a couple of outdoor party and busking type gigs. Kept up with electric guitar, vocals, fiddle and drums. Looks good, eesy to control. Batteries seem to hold charge a long time. I played my harp thru a mic and it would make a good harp amp for a blues guy. Covering looks good and cleans up well; I protect it with car tire shine. I never need the headphones but the sound thru the headphones is good; using either input. Two inputs is a nice feature, although I only use one. Headphone jack out to board or another amp works well. Someone was concerned about the input jack at the bottom; mine is fine but I found that if it's a concern just put it on it's right side and the input jack will be at the top.

Comments about Pignose Hog 30 Amp:

I bought this amp for it's portability, but after playing various basses through it I found the sound quality extremely midrange & lacking any bass response. Maybe I was expecting too much from a battery powered amp?

Comments about Pignose Hog 30 Amp:

At first seemed to have poor tone and some distortion. After working with it (and maybe the speaker had to be "broken in") it has an acceptable sound as long as you know it's limitations. I turn both levels to about 2 o'clock, bass to 9, treble and mid to 5 I have used it once at an outdoor houswarming, background music type gig, Guitar, Drums, Fiddle, Vocals and me on bass. Works fine for home practice along with the stereo or TV.

Comments about Pignose Hog 30 Amp:

Warm and clear tones at low to moderate (for small amp) device but rattles a lot at higher settings. Battery = excellent. Simple to set and control but access to knobs is down low. 1/4 inch tear in "leather" near handle and poor glue job at upper back seams. Retro look is great but it oinks a lot and eats too much.

          kickin' little portable amps

          By PAUL

          from Rockford Il

Comments about Pignose Hog 30 Amp:

I bought two of these for my band. We play all original Rock/ Blues/ Jazz. We do a lot of outside practicing along our beautiful Rock River or we pop into one of our local breweries and jam instead of in the garage. These little guys work great. Last night was our first real jam. Guitarist used one with a mic plugged into the 2nd input and me with a bass into the other and a drummer on a cajon. Instant band with no electricity needed. Portability with no power cable. Fantastic! This opens the door for open stages and outdoor jams never conceived before. Thanks Pignose!

It can keep up to the cubes and other small amps the guys use.Sounds good and is very portable.I'll still use my big amp for gigs but works well for my weekly playing and my knuckles have stopped dragging.
