I received this amp from Musician's Friend as a bonus when I purchased a Korg SV-1 keyboard. It is perfect as a practice amp or even an amp for small room solo gigs. If you think you're going to drive a full 88 key keyboard or bass at full volume, you will be disappointed. There are three key points that allow you to pull more power out of this amp: 1) pay attention to the gain structure 2) use subtractive EQ and not additive, and 3) get the amp off the floor (I use two milk crates). I just used this amp on a medium size restaurant gig and it worked fine with only minor clipping. The Phonic EQ should only be used to cut frequencies, not boost them – all major EQing should be done before the signal hits the Phonic. I used an old Boss 8-channel line mixer loaded with reverb and delay effects as well as sends from a SV-1, vocal, Roland GR-55, a Digi Tech JamMan, and a Godin Spectrum guitar – sounded great. If you need a bull of a keyboard amp, pass on this. If you're willing to really work with EQ and gain structure in medium room environments, you might like this amp.

I just bought the Phonic MK50 Keyboard Amp, and practiced with my rock band last night. I would expect a 50 watt amp to put out a lot more volume before maxing out. The reverb is so-so, but most keyboards have nicer effects anyway. With the 4-band EQ, I got fairly nice sound quality, but both the clip lights on the individual channels, and the limit light on the output side, come on at fairly moderate volume, and sound will start distorting whenever they light up. If I keep it below clip levels and put it close to me, it's a nice personal keyboard monitor, but needs to be mic'd into the PA to be heard over the guitars. And the mic needs to be positioned to catch both the tweeter and woofer to get the full range of sound. The website, the manual, and even the box all say there is an external speaker jack, but there is not, nor is there a line out, unless I were to tap into the effects insert somehow. The amp seems to be built solid, but not high-end, with plastic corner protectors. There are no side-view pictures anywhere on the web, but the back is slanted both top and bottom like a floor monitor, so it faces mostly up, maybe 60 degrees, fairly good for keyboard either standing or sitting.I rated it good in value mainly because I got a really good deal from MF. At its typical price there are probably other better options, especially if you don't always have the ability to mic to a PA.

Comments about Phonic MK50 Keyboard Amplifier:

Comparable to the other three 50 watt keyboard amps currently being sold exclusively for electronic drum set use. An electronic drum set requires BOTH a woofer AND a tweeter and ONLY a keyboard amp or an electronic drum set amp has both. This particular unit has PLENTY of power for practice at home. May also be employed in a live performance, so long as the drummer is not drown out by a bunch of screaming electric guitars. NOTE: any time you plug a set of headphones into the headphone jack, the on-board speakers automatically cut out in order to protect the circuitry in the amp head from overloading. So, the only way that you can use this amp as a monitor would be to have the sound engineer run a line out of the headphone jack into the house P.A., and then he would have to set-up separate monitor for the drummer. I was never able to get the knack for wearing headphones, no matter what make or model I tried.

When these units are on sale they are a bargain. The problem is they are not that powerful and the sound quality is average at best.We do have two of them and use them together for a stereo sound in our studio but would not ever use these at a gig.

This is a very good amp for small applications. I use it for my baritone guitar and the heavy duty speaker sounds much better on the low end than my regular guitar amp. Problem is, it doesn't have a line out nor does it have an ext. speaker output like the ad says. Even the manual says there is a speaker out but it doesn't have one. Still, it's worth the price and can be a good practice amp for just about any instrument including vocals.

It is a wee bit heavy and casters would make it easier to transport. Otherwise, a well featured amp at a bargain price.

Comments about Phonic MK50 Keyboard Amplifier:

The sound quality is actually pretty decent, but it goes into clip mode if you get the volume no louder than an unplugged acoustic guitar. They claim 50W RMS, but I seriously doubt if you are getting 20 continuous. Very disappointed, useless for most applications. I bought for keys and some light duty acoustic amping, but it is unsuitable for any coffee shop gig or similar.
