Comments about Peterson Strobe Center 5000-II Tuner:

The main reason after an extra $3000 I did not opt for this as a main piece of gear was too many parts to break, and I do not work with bells, vibes, chimes, marimbas, etc enough. These are great for tuning church bells, and other things where the fundamental decays into a harmonic. If I do find one used at a good price I will buy another one. I use the 490 ST most of the time. It still will lock onto harmonics and wolf tones when I do not want it to. This will lock onto everything so my E will show on the E wheel, and if I have a minor 3rd harmonic that will show on another wheel. Wolf tones are not as big a problem either with this and 5ths, I liken this to the TV-2 vacuum tube tester to say the 752 model. 7 meters you have 6 more things to go wrong. The Peterson company still makes a pretty rugged instrument and a good case. Some things are better than ever, some are a little lighter in weight and not as tough. One huge improvement is a constant voltage power supply. Older Conn/Peterson stuff would wander and hunt rather than lock in if the line voltage was not right or was varying. That is not an issue with these big nice Petersons. If you have bad astigmatism then you may not be able to use this at all. The wheels will always look blurry. That and it's complexity are the only drawbacks. For orchestral uses this is what you want. For church bell tuning this is a must, vibraphone, etc. I do not need to go into physics and theory, but these really shine when it comes to certain aspects of tuning. Too much tuner for my small shop now, but I would love to have another one anyway. Sadly band and orchestra are gone from most schools. Our family shop was feverishly busy every summer rehabbing instruments. Now that shop is gone the owner near death, and founder long dead along with music in schools. The Peterson 5000 is their flagship model. The 490 was more to my needs, but we do share a 5000 with a couple other small shops. Believe it or not it is not the most expensive tuner out there. It is among the best, if not the best. One other high end tuner better suits those with eye problems who cannot use this unit. You will pay about $6000 for it. It is not as versitile either. It is easir to use, but this is a better value in my opinion. The old 5000s were awesome huge hulking beasts. At least my back will not go out moving the newer one!

Comments about Peterson Strobe Center 5000-II Tuner:

Extremely precise, very easy to use, can tune chords, and it shows shows you the fundamental and overtones of each pitch it hears. The perfect tool.

The Key to a Large Group Playing In Tune

By Colton the Bass Trombonist

from Beebe, AR

Comments about Peterson Strobe Center 5000-II Tuner:

My high school band has one of these and it works amazingly well. This can tune an instrument from across a band room (30-55 ft) superbly. This is strongly recomended to anyone who needs to tune a group of people, though the price would lead me not to recomend it to an individual musician. An average electric tuner would be ideal for personal use. Band directors: get this tuner!

Comments about Peterson Strobe Center 5000-II Tuner:

we use one of these tuners for highschool marching/concert band and it is very precise, the only bad thing about it is that it picks up every sound in the room.

Comments about Peterson Strobe Center 5000-II Tuner:

Well I thnk im one of the few people who has used this. It is amazing. I played guitar in a jazz band, and every instrument would tune to this tuner. The entire band would be synchronized in moments, it is amazing.
