The short answer is that I really like it. It's got enough offerings to keep me entertained for a very long time. I would suggest to anyone looking to buy one, first download the owners manual from peavey.com. It describes all three of the Vypyrs (VIP-1,VIP-2,VIP-3) in one manual. There's lots of overlap but also comparisons, each offering something the other two don't have. This should help you decide. Personally I wouldn't get anything with less than a 12" spkr. The other reason you need to read the manual is so you understand that to access all of the capabilities in any of them, you have to also buy a foot controller (Sanpera I or Sanpera II). They run about $110 and $230. I got the #II ($230), so the system (2 piece) cost me $430. If you don't, you won't have the looper, remote control of the effects , volume control, wah & pitch control, remote tuning, and another 100 models to play with....you get my point! This is why I gave the Vypyr-2 4stars instead of 5. Now, if you're like me, you would eventually get foot pedals anyway. Might as well do it at the same time. Also, if you have a stack of pedals already, they won't work with a Vypyr. It uses a midi cable only. I knew this before I purchased my system, and so should you. I have not tried the recording software yet. Hopefully another reviewer will fill you in.

Amp Sounds great, even at low levels. Has all the addon effects. You can play both electric and acoustic guitars and bass through it. Why this amp lacks as stand alone is the ability to control/use it's abilities without having to pay $120 or $230 for the midi controller. Forget about trying to change tones while playing "live" without a controller, unless you stick to one sound for the whole song. 2112 is impossible without the controller. Forget about turning any of the effects (flanger, chorus, phaser, etc) on and off easily. And from what I have seen so far, cant even control the reverb/delay unless you have the controller. The computer interface sucks. After half the day just trying to get the thing accept the firmware update, cant get the software to talk to the amp to do the presets.

Amazing!!! Bass and Guitar amp in one?

By Aaron Todd

from Baltimore, Md

Comments about Peavey VYPYR VIP 2 40W 1x12 Guitar Modeling Combo Amp:

Being both a bass and guitar player I thought this amp was to good to be true. This is the real deal man. My bass sounds are better then my other dedicated bass rig. Time to Craigs List that pig. Great Acoustic Amps, Bass Amps and of course Peavey nails the guitar amp models. My favorite is the Budda and 6505 models. Gain sounds real not digital. I got this at the Towson location last week. I think I was the first to get it as they just came in and the rep was going over it with the employees. I'm blown away.

Great hardware, software is not yet fully functional

By Raymond Wood

Comments about Peavey VYPYR VIP 2 40W 1x12 Guitar Modeling Combo Amp:

I have been playing guitar for 40 years and this amp is, easily, the best amp I have ever owned --- especially at such a ridiculously low price. The range and quality of tone you can get from it is simply unrivaled. I lean toward what you younger guys might call jazz [most of the amps I have owned were combo amps with two 12" speakers purchased because of their clean sound] and it pleases me that I can get such a smooth, warm, clean, tone when I want it. But, also, when I am in a Mahavishnu mood, I can get an over-driven tube-esque tone as well. The Buddha amp emulation can take it way beyond that to more of what younger guys prefer for rock [ergo, more cajones and less technique] but I am not personally into that sort of thing. Check out some of the VIP youtube videos to get a feel for how well it performs for rockers. This amp is all solid state, but it uses Peavey's amazing TransTube technology to, finally, get beyond the well known limitations that solid state amps have had in the past once they slip into overdrive. Peavey's TransTube technology is based on the idea that 'tube' sound is more a factor of output transformers than tubes and it really does work. I should also mention that this is a really loud amp to be rated at only 40 watts. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because the Windows software is still buggy. Even worse, the Mac software is, at least at the time of this writing, non-existent. You can browse over to forums.peavey.com to get up to date status of Peavey's software support from users. We are beating up on Peavey mercilessly about this and they say all will be made right very shortly. Just be aware that, as of this writing, this is an astoundingly awesome amp with next to useless computer software support.

A whole lot of hype

By Johnny Contreras

Comments about Peavey VYPYR VIP 2 40W 1x12 Guitar Modeling Combo Amp:

I got this about a month ago and gigged with it twice, with that said I was very disappointed with it. I had a peavey viper 1x12 100w before this amp and it was amazing so I thought I'd give this one a try, I walked down to my local guitar center and played it. I let emotions get away with this one and thought it sounded amazing in the store, I bought it and took it to band practice later that day and was a in "love" but everyone in my band hated the sound, next week I gigged it and it didn't hold up. It was skipping notes and at one point just shut off completely. I was really bummed out no doubt, I refunded it and got a vox ac12vr, and couldn't be happier

Best combo amp you can get for the price

By Billy

from Crystal Lake, IL

Comments about Peavey VYPYR VIP 2 40W 1x12 Guitar Modeling Combo Amp:

I have been playing guitar for two years, and with my experience and knowledge of equipment, I can definitely say that this amp can produce a huge array of different sounds. I mainly stick to the XXX amp because it has a clear gain-y sound good for everything from Iron Maiden and Eric Johnson to Avenged Sevenfold and Metallica. Learning how to EQ your sound can take some time if you're new to it, but it's just like any other quality amp. For my clean settings, I like to put the Trace amp on green and add just a little bit of chorus. You can save up to eight custom electric guitar sounds (four on electric one and four on electric two), which should definitely be more than enough. This amp's volume capacity is also more than enough to perform locally. It CAN be hooked up to a cabinet using a converter in the headphone jack, but you won't hear yourself from the actual Vypyr, unfortunately. But you can always mic it into a PA. The only bad thing I've noticed from this amp during the past seven months of abuse everyday was that you have to buy the special Peavey Sanpera footswitch to operate it onstage. Other than that, the tiny corner pieces fall off. Just recently, I got a loose connection in the input jack, but I took it back to Player's Bench (where I actually bought it from, small music shop in my town) and took advantage of the one year manufacturer's warranty. I performed with this at my school's talent show playing Hail To The King and definitely gave me an authentic, clear sound. Overall, you get every penny you pay in this fantastic combo amp. Good for budget bedroom players or beginners that are not ready for half stacks yet.

Comments about Peavey VYPYR VIP 2 40W 1x12 Guitar Modeling Combo Amp:

As others stated, you need the foot pedal to really do anything while playing live. They don't say that anywhere in their descriptions.

Also, when changing between amps, there is a noticeable difference in the loudness. If you use one of the green amp setups (acoustic), I have to change the master volume from 1.5 to 10 to compensate. That is a big problem. So, it's ok considering it is cheap. Not so good that you have to buy a pedal to get everything to work, and the discrepancies in volume between modes is terrible.

Comments about Peavey VYPYR VIP 2 40W 1x12 Guitar Modeling Combo Amp:

I like this amp's acoustic instrument model, also its 6534+, 6505, classic and British amp emulation. Speaker of this amp is OK for the price range; at least it has bass, others don't. You cannot connect a cabinet to this amp, because it does not have output. However, a little creativity is a good thing! If this amp comes in form of a head, rather than a combo unit, I would buy it for sure. For those who use headphone, VIP 1 would be a fantastic deal.
