The short answer is that I really like it. It's got enough offerings to keep me entertained for a very long time. I would suggest to anyone looking to buy one, first download the owners manual from peavey.com. It describes all three of the Vypyrs (VIP-1,VIP-2,VIP-3) in one manual. There's lots of overlap but also comparisons, each offering something the other two don't have. This should help you decide. Personally I wouldn't get anything with less than a 12" spkr. The other reason you need to read the manual is so you understand that to access all of the capabilities in any of them, you have to also buy a foot controller (Sanpera I or Sanpera II). They run about $110 and $230. I got the #II ($230), so the system (2 piece) cost me $430. If you don't, you won't have the looper, remote control of the effects , volume control, wah & pitch control, remote tuning, and another 100 models to play with....you get my point! This is why I gave the Vypyr-2 4stars instead of 5. Now, if you're like me, you would eventually get foot pedals anyway. Might as well do it at the same time. Also, if you have a stack of pedals already, they won't work with a Vypyr. It uses a midi cable only. I knew this before I purchased my system, and so should you. I have not tried the recording software yet. Hopefully another reviewer will fill you in.

Amp Sounds great, even at low levels. Has all the addon effects. You can play both electric and acoustic guitars and bass through it. Why this amp lacks as stand alone is the ability to control/use it's abilities without having to pay $120 or $230 for the midi controller. Forget about trying to change tones while playing "live" without a controller, unless you stick to one sound for the whole song. 2112 is impossible without the controller. Forget about turning any of the effects (flanger, chorus, phaser, etc) on and off easily. And from what I have seen so far, cant even control the reverb/delay unless you have the controller. The computer interface sucks. After half the day just trying to get the thing accept the firmware update, cant get the software to talk to the amp to do the presets.

Comments about Peavey VYPYR VIP 2 40W 1x12 Guitar Modeling Combo Amp:

Used amp rarely, sat in closet most of the time. Had to send it back to peavey twice in less than 3 years of owning. First time was within months of buying, no audio, faulty ribbon cable. Second time 6505 amp simulators were farting out way over modulating with no way to adjust, control knobs useless,, obvious fail, updated software version with no change. They replaced the sound board, been fine since then. Bought sanpera I footswitch for live gigs. Cable too short and split second audio delay when switching channels. Other than that, works for gigs and jam sessions for the price.

Comments about Peavey VYPYR VIP 2 40W 1x12 Guitar Modeling Combo Amp:

I bought this amp for practice and use on a worship stage. I must say there is nothing I need that the Peavey Vypyr VIP2 combined with the Sanpera 2 foot controller [sold separately] doesn't deliver. For a modelling amp, the sound quality is really amazing from such a small package. Notwithstanding the numerous odd effects and simulations that I never plan to use, the tones cover everything from jazz, to country, to metal extremely well. However, I will say that the learning curve is rather steep for this rig. Almost every button has at least two separate functions. The amp has multiple modes and learning to use the multitude of features offered took time and patience. I would also say that the foot controller is essential for live performances. It unlocks the built-in looper for practice and bank/effect foot selectability live. The Sanpera 2 also includes an L.E.D. display which allows for user-defined naming of presets and at-a-glance determination of almost everything else . MSRP for the Sanpera 2 is actually slightly higher than for the amp itself.

Comments about Peavey VYPYR VIP 2 40W 1x12 Guitar Modeling Combo Amp:

As others stated, you need the foot pedal to really do anything while playing live. They don't say that anywhere in their descriptions.

Also, when changing between amps, there is a noticeable difference in the loudness. If you use one of the green amp setups (acoustic), I have to change the master volume from 1.5 to 10 to compensate. That is a big problem. So, it's ok considering it is cheap. Not so good that you have to buy a pedal to get everything to work, and the discrepancies in volume between modes is terrible.

Amps and effects Sound great to me.You dont actually have to have the Senpera foot controller to use this live, it is quite controllable as far as changing presets is concerned with a simple midi controller like a "midi mouse." You can program up to 16 presets and recall them in this fashion.

My son and I just use this at home with a Les Paul, and the sound is truly amazing- anything from crystal clear acoustic tones to rib-cracking grunge and the heaviest metal tones are available, not to mention the different effects you can then program into it. Just tinkering with all of the different modeling capabilities is a blast, and the ability to play and hear some of the most famous amps in history is really cool, too- almost educational. And it was really fairly easy to use and figure out all of the different capabilities this thing has. And it is powerful! In the house, we normally set the volume around 1 - 1.5, and it is loud! I have no doubt you could use this amp on stage with no problem..
