I know you're not reading this to learn all about me but I think my experiences definitely add to the appeal of this amp & better explains why it kicks a. I play mostly metal/metalcore/djent/jazz stuff. I play an Agile Septor Elite 8 string with EMG 808s. I've been playing for 15+ years, I've owned all kinds of tube, solid state, & hybrid heads & combos. Some good, some not so good. I've been a die hard fan of Line 6 from the beginning. Despite the naysayers, they have a loyal following & for good reason. I've owned several Line 6 amps & I've been relying on my original red bean POD as my main practice/recording tool for at least the last 10 years. (I tried the newer HD version as well but it just wasn't for me) There's just something so right about the original & I've gotten so much praise over my tone over the years, thanks mostly to my POD. I will say Line 6 does metal exceptionally well & it's been my go-to since forever but I think it's finally met its match. I'm genuinely astounded at the tones coming out of this amp. First things first, I've owned a block letter 5150 stack, a Valveking 100 stack, & a 6505+ 112 combo & I tell you what, this amp can get so close to those amps it's amazing! Not in terms of volume of course but the tonal dynamics, responsiveness, & overall sound, just WOW. The level of tonal quality & characteristics can be heard on all the other amp models too. It takes a lot to impress me & I'm impressed. It's the amp I never knew I needed so much. This amp, & frankly the entire Vypyr series, is a true diamond in the rough. Seriously, tone gurus, tube purists, & gear snobs alike need to set aside their biases & give this amp an honest chance. Trust me, I get the appeal of the "real deal amps" & they're amazing but, & maybe it's just me, why should I fork over stupid amounts of money for the genuine article when I can spend a fraction on something that sounds SO close? I'm over the phase of caring what others think of my gear, for me it's all about the tone &, to quote Metallica, nothing else matters. This thing is good for solo practice, band practice, & you can mic it on stage. Who cares that it's small & it's not an expensive boutique tube amp? I should also mention I'm a dad & husband & I work for a living so good deals like this are a godsend for me. Family is so much more important than gear so thank you Peavey for offering this kind of quality at such a small price. I stumbled upon & purchased the original 15w Vypyr not too long ago & was so impressed with the tone it produced I sold it & got the updated/upgraded model. The difference between the 2...well the 20w is more powerful/louder of course, noticeably better overall build quality, an added 3/4 rear speaker enclosure (thank you! much tighter/deeper bass response!), addition of bass/acoustic modeling, the list just goes on & on as far as features go. Guys I really believe Peavey is onto something here & I have no doubt that history will prove that I'm right. People are going to start taking notice, it's only a matter of time & I hope it helps change the whole dynamic for other amp manufacturers. You CAN give customers good tone & quality without asking for their soul &/or entire savings! Now that technology has come this far, it's obvious things in the industry are going to start changing & I'm proud to be part of that shift. I don't know about you guys but I've already spent enough money on gear! Thanks again Peavey, you deserve all the praise in the world & you'd be a fool not to purchase one of these amps. BUY THE AMP!

As I was waiting on a sales rep at guitar Center to finish up a purchase I made, I though I would grab a guitar (white American Strat with a maple neck) and plug into something in the meantime. As I don't like playing loud, I noticed these little Peavey Vypers on the floor; I chose the smallest one. I fiddled with all the dials, randomly going through amp models and effects and found some useful tones. The last combination that I concocted was a magical one between amp and guitar. I played inspired. Wow, gotta remember the name of this little amp for later reference. My sales guy was ready. We closed the deal and I went home with that guitar and amp combo sound still in my mind.

Later that evening I YouTubed the VIP-1 and came across an excellent demo. I was impressed with the direct recording tones the guy was getting into his DAW via the USB port. As I needed something that would mute the speaker for night recording, I thought this would be a nice addition to other recording equipment I have. That's it; I was going in the next day and buying one!

Bought the amp and brought it home. I installed all that was on the DVD that came with the amp, plugged the USB in, and ... nothing. I'm using Sonar X1 under Windows7. The Peavey website resource page for downloads and updates was no help at all, as it only has the Reaper and Amp programs for download. Nothing about the USB driver. Googled said issue. Read a lot. I went on the Peavey amp forum and was not too surprised to find many people having same problem; their computer/DAW would not recognize the Vyper's USB driver. I even tried the Asio4all driver, as was recommended, but to no avail. As my main reason for the purchase was for recording without a mic, the amp failed its purpose. BTW; I did try the phones out, which did mute the speaker, but I was not impressed with the tones I was getting from that jack. Maybe I'll look the amp up at a later date when Peavey figures out the USB issue.

Comments about Peavey VYPYR VIP 1 20W 1x8 Guitar Modeling Combo Amp:

Just got the amp home and plugged it in; LOVE IT! it has so many settings and sounds so clean and crisp although I have replacement pickups- (Joe Barden for Danny Gatton) - (the telecaster guru)and not sure if it's the pickups or the amp or both that makes it so clear and crisp! Anyway, I really love that amp! My wife likes it too! I basically bought it for the porch or living room so I don't have to lug my 100 watt Fender Mustang up and down the stairs and to be honest, I would have never bought the Mustang amp if I tried the VIP 1 first - it is VERY loud and I play it at about 2 or 3 volume! It has any kind of reverb or delay or tremolo as u go thru the settings that anyone really needs; also crunch and distortion that I don't use - I don't play metal or hard rock; I'm 72 yrs old and coming out of guitar retirement! Best move I ever made!! Love to hear the sounds and notes!! The Guitar Center was very helpful and love to deal with these guys - true professionals!

Comments about Peavey VYPYR VIP 1 20W 1x8 Guitar Modeling Combo Amp:

This was an exchange for a lesser amp for personal use by me from G.C. in Winter Park, FL.
I play a solid body with P-90s through it.
You can not beat this for the money, or even for more money. The amp is sturdily built with solid controls. The controls are intuitive. The effects may not be as deep as having a fully loaded pedal board but sound great and a good way to find where you want to upgrade at some point.
The speaker is LOUD. I practice with it on 0.5 and my guitar's volume on 2 or 3. The clean channels are clear and bright with plenty of ways to add distortion and break up your sound.
This is the second Vyper I've purchased. The first was for bought someone else. I made the mistake of buying another modeler for me and returned it within two days.
This amp is a keeper! Before you buy another amp in this price range try this one.
I recommend this for beginner to experienced.

Fantastic amp, insane bargain for what you get.

By Chris Newell

Comments about Peavey VYPYR VIP 1 20W 1x8 Guitar Modeling Combo Amp:

I can't believe this an is as inexpensive as it is. It really is the best solid state am I have ever played through. All of the amps and effects in this thing are perfectly modeled after the real things. I own a 6505+ and can vouch that the 6505+ model in the VIP1 sounds exactly like the real deal. The bass guitar and acoustic guitar models that can be used with an electric guitar sound genuine and not cheesy. They did a great job with that. The Vpyyr Edit software that you can download and use with this amp is great and makes fine tuning all of the settings and presets even easier than it already is on the amp itself. This amp also comes with Peavey's Revalver software. This amp is plenty loud for small performances and practicing with a band. It's lightweight and sounds fantastic!

Best Practice Amp for the Money- Does much more than metal

By matthew greene

from Nashville

Comments about Peavey VYPYR VIP 1 20W 1x8 Guitar Modeling Combo Amp:

I've owned a Mustang 1 (v1), Orange Crush12, & MicroCube. In addition to the Vypyr, I also have a Blackstar HT1, and a Yamaha THR10. At the GC store in Evansville, I couldn't figure out how to turn the delay off & I hate trying to demo something in a store anyway. So I just bought one & figured I'd do a return if it sucked. After 2 days, I threw the box away... the VIP is a keeper! Once I figured out the controls, it all makes perfect sense and is much simpler than the Mustang. I haven't tried the bass or acoustic settings yet, but the electric models alone make it well worth the money. A lot of folks seem to be upset that there aren't a gazillion metal models on the new Vypyr. I've actually not even gotten around to trying most of them yet. I stay mostly in the clean and crunch modes. The butcher, budda, and classic are all great models. The twin is really good too, but that's the one thing that was better on the Mustang (at least until it started getting a staticy background noise that I couldn't get rid of). I mostly bypass the effects- not that they are bad, I just don't play anything that needs more than a slapback or tubescreamer. The VIP takes pedals well so I will probably use my Bad Monkey and Carbon Copy a majority of the time. I haven't decided yet if I like the Vypyr better than my THR in terms of pure sound quality, but at less than half the price, Peavey is definitely the better value. In terms of volume, I haven't cranked it up, but between 2 and 4 (out of 13) is plenty loud enough for practicing at a volume level that will annoy the wife, but not the neighbors. I was looking at the VIP2 just because there are even more great features for not very much more coin, but it was just way too loud for my needs.

Peavey vip 1

By JOHN DARLAND

Comments about Peavey VYPYR VIP 1 20W 1x8 Guitar Modeling Combo Amp:

The sound this produces is amazing. I have the original vypyr and I loved it until I heard the vip. The vip 1 sounds real. You can tell peavey took their time with this one. The effects sound like they should. Every amp model has three channels, clean, lo gain and high gain. I play this everyday. The original vypyrr was great. I still have the 30 watt, but the vip blows it away. Again the sound is unreal. This sounds like your playing through a stack. I play rock and metal, mostly van halen and I can pull off amazing tones. I can get my sterling ax40 to sound identical to Eddie's balance tour tone. I have only had this amp for a month so I cannot comment on reliability.

Great little amp.

By Stephen King

from Lebanon, OH

Comments about Peavey VYPYR VIP 1 20W 1x8 Guitar Modeling Combo Amp:

I recently picked up this amp at the local music store near me, and could not be more happy. It has nice crisp cleans, a very good selection of simluated amplifiers, and effects. My friend who has been playing for 38 years was very impressed. He took to liking it real quick when we hooked up my Epiphone Les Paul Standard to it. The easy to use controls make it very user friendly when trying to find just the sound you are looking for. I'm just starting out with playing but my friend really put it through the paces. Beautiful, crisp, warm, and toneful cleans are almost effortless. Dark, robust, and crunchy effects are very generous. For $130 I could not ask for any better. Contrary to what I was told opon purchasing, it does not have a built in tuner. This is no biggy I would advise that if you had a Iphone or like device to just download a free tuner. You will be surprized how accurate they really are. (I took back a $50 tuner)If you are just starting, looking for a good around the house, or on the go amp, then this may be just be the ticket. Don't expect that bnecause it has "transtube" technology that it will sound like a tube amp. However it does give it a genuine unique sound that is very interesting and fun to play with. Sure you may not use it while gigging but no amp for less than $300 is really great for that. Small bar type venues though would really be easy with this amp. Oh and I never get to turn it up allot but man..... Its pretty loud for a 8" 20watt amp. this is pure perfection for what it is.

Is it just me?

By Andrew Wukusick

from Waynesfield, Ohio

Comments about Peavey VYPYR VIP 1 20W 1x8 Guitar Modeling Combo Amp:

I got this amp a few months ago as a travel/practice amp for jam sessions with the band, it seemed like a nice little practice amp with lots of good effects, but no matter what I use distortion wise, it always has this weird loud hum swell for a second after I silence a note. Even low amounts of gain on the amp's distortion does this. I usually love Peavey, but this amp isn't worth the money. Line 6's Spider seems to work better imo.

Great value for the money

By Adam Simon

from Louisville, KY

Comments about Peavey VYPYR VIP 1 20W 1x8 Guitar Modeling Combo Amp:

A great little amp for the money. I looked at the comparable Marshall MG15 and the Fender Mustang and decided on the Peavey. If you like the fancy digital stuff, then you may want to consider the Mustang. The Marshall didn't seem to have quite as many features and was a little more expensive. The Peavey is as straightforward as you can get as far as the settings go. The clean acoustic setting worked well with my effects pedals. The channels have great pre-sets that can be easily tweaked to however you like them. Last but not least it's pretty loud. I have to keep it under 5 before the wife and kids complain about the noise and that's in a pretty sound-proof music room.

Comments about Peavey VYPYR VIP 1 20W 1x8 Guitar Modeling Combo Amp:

Honestly I can't even tell the difference between the actuall 6505 and the 6505 sound on this amp. I understand that on the live stage you need a big sound and a big amp. This amp can't give you that big sound, but it can give you a good copy of it that u can use at home and possibly for recording. I still can't understand why people don't like the digitals but I don't want to complain because they're all so cheap XD. If you're looking for the 6505 sound and are not trying to spend a lot of money, buy this amp.

Comments about Peavey VYPYR VIP 1 20W 1x8 Guitar Modeling Combo Amp:

This is a very powerful and versatile amp! I've used it for acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass, and even cello! It sounds amazing and can emulate most any type of amp to fit the style of music you are playing or recording. I only wish it had a midi and a direct out jack.

Good for guitar, horrible for bass

By Ian

from Boise, Idaho

Comments about Peavey VYPYR VIP 1 20W 1x8 Guitar Modeling Combo Amp:

While I would say that it is a great little amp for guitar, plenty of settings and sounds to choose from (the reverse setting is a must!), however, this would have to be one of the worst amps for a bass (ironic considering that it is marketed primarily as a bass amp). Unless you have the low turned waaaaay down it will buzz and kill the note like you would not believe. Quite honestly I would rather have a 10 watt starter bass amp than this, the only decent bass sound I can get out of it is when I plug my headphones into it. To summarize: if you are getting this for a guitar, go for it; for a bass? Avoid at all cost.

I was at guitar center after a few years if not steadily playing guitar anymore. I walked in and needed all new equipment because I had sold everything I had before. I picked up a cheap $120 Jackson and was instructed that the Line 6 AMP that was of same value of the peavy was a lot better. So I went with the salesmen's advice. I get home and plug it all up and got to jamming. This Line 6 Amplifier sounded like complete garbage. I knew I should have went with the Peavy amp. I went back and exchanged amps. I got home and plugged this in and even on the default presets this amp was screaming. So crystal clear, I though I was playing one of their tube amplifiers again. Honestly peavy did this right and I loved this out of the box. I have never been so happy to have a great sounding amp for under $100. For anyone who wants great sound for less money with tons of options for any player with any sound preference, defiantly go with the peavy VIP 1.

I'm just getting back into guitar playing after 25 years. Was looking at a inexpensive amp to get back into the groove without spending tons of money on effect pedals. Started looking into the Fender Mustang 1 and Peavey VIP 1 and both seemed to be about the same with using online programs to create custom sounds through the amp. I decided on the Vypyr because I liked the optional pedal (Sanpera) which can selected more effects.
I read many people find the controls on the amp confusing and I myself did too. But I installed the Vypyr software on my laptop and was able to create my sounds, save it into different banks and select from the Sanpera pedal. Love this amp!

DO NOT BUY THIS AMP IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR GOOD SOUND QUALITY. I bought this amp as a replacement for my newly purchased Fender Mustang, which I disliked due to it's poor quality. I purchased the Peavy VYPR hoping it would give me good sound quality and still have a large bank of effects to play around with. The effects are mediocre... They are very flexible in that you can manually edit the variables of each effect from just the knobs on the amp, however, they effects themselves do not put out a good sound quality. The digital amp models on the amp are alright I guess, but sometimes the tones can be a little weak. Personally I would not recommend buying this amp, if you are looking to buy a good modeling amp with quality sound and effects I would suggest looking at the higher end amps from LINE 6, I've messed around with some of them and as far as I can tell they are a huge improvement compared to the VYPR.

I haven't played an electric guitar for the past 22 years. My wife bought me the amp, July 2017, after I restored my 1964 Gibson Firebird V water damaged back in 1995. The VIP 1 is pretty loud and easy to setup and customized - I gave a 4 star because I don't have the Sanpera I, which I have to select the Bank by hand.
With the USB & VIP Edit I have customized presets, saved them and write the new presets to the amp. Since I don't have a bass guitar, yet, I use Bank D as Electric 3. The Vypyr VIP 1 was great for when I was sitting up my Firebird which sounds great with this amp.
Overall, a great amp "user friendly", I read a lot of reviews regarding this amp, there were some negative feedback regarding the USB and software. I am not an expert, but, I do read a lot before buying anything. I also visit the manufacturer/product website to download related PDF manuals and software. It helps to familiarize myself before actually buying the product.
I'm very happy with my wife's purchase - now she's talking about getting me a American Fender Stratocaster -
