I have owned a few fender tube amps over the years and always used pedals for distortion. The last few years I played a modeling amp. What I wanted was at least 100 watts, all tube and a 4x12 cab. I bought the Valve king and the matching cabinet. I researched the heck out of this amp, I talked to Marshall owners, Boogie owners, boutique amp owners etc and played their amps. What I wanted was a straight forward, no frills, no gadget amp with settings and features I could understand and utilize and I wanted great tone. I am 47 and play a lot of classic rock with the older guys but I also play metal, punk , grunge, pop country or any thing else with a cover band. This amp fit the bill. It will not stand out in a specific genre; rather it does a very respectable and more than adequate job on them all. With a few pedals I got every sound I wanted and it only cost 900.00! The lead channel sounds warm and classic ?Marshall like? (not the sizzle distortion like in the peavey 5150?s though I liked those too), the clean channel sounded great , plus it has the texture control on the back which most people will like because you can really fine tune the amp. By the way I did kinda feel like was trying to get off cheap by not springing for a Marshall or boogie, but when I got it home I was really satisfied, my homies that play those amps were surprised and impressed as well. This amp deserves respect. P.S. I bought a 2yr warranty on the head for 80.00 in case I?m wrong!!!

I researched many reviews for this amp before making the purchace. I purchaced this amp and cab in February of 2008. Many reviews campare the sound of this amp with top of the line Marshals and Mesa's. I have to wonder where these impressions came from because that couldn't be further from fact. This amp is nowhere close to the to flavorable sound of a Marshal or Mesa. I found a few tone options that was nice but the sound leaves the amp very muddy and lacking mids and lows. When recorded, the sound is very amature and presents a squeaky texture that I just couldn't get rid of. In addition, the more volume, the muddier the sound. Using the gain boost gives me loud squealing that I have to try to control on my guitar volume knob. It's a real pain and embarrasment. I had to order the footswitch seperately for an additional $50. The speaker cabinet is nice and solid but the sound is terrible. I tried my amp through other cabinets with improved results over the Valveking Cabinet. I took it in for repair to try to fix the muddy tone and sqeals but warranty work would not cover the costs of the modifying solutions. In fact, I was told to get rid of it on ebay and start again with a Marshal. Upon opening up the poorly made box, screws inside where found loose and spray paint found on electrical parts. I am not pleased with the sound from this amp and feel I made a poor purchace.

Best bang for the buck!

Comments about Peavey Valve King Half-Stack:

I am currently in a band that tours the west and while at home on break putting together a new album, our house was broken into and my mesa stack was stolen among other things as well. With very little cash I had to find a new setup. I played the valveking at G.C. and was impressed so I bought it. We have played many live gigs since," usually in front of 400-500 people", and it performs solidly without any problems. I can honestly say that the tone from this combo is as good as the mesa's, and with all the options to fine tune, I would definately suggest this combo to anyone!

A "King" of All Trades

By Blktiger0

Comments about Peavey Valve King Half-Stack:

I was down at my local Guitar Center checking out just about any guitar and amp i could, and i stumbled upon this amp. I plugged every type of guitar i could find into it, and it never ceased to amaze me. I finally settled down with an Epiphone Les Paul and this and played with every feature on it, and was totally blown away. I got literally every tone possible out of this amp. The cleans are amazing, and thanks to the texture knob, Damping controls, and gain boost i could go from a Fender low-gain to a Krank high-gain tone and everywhere in between. ANYONE could add this amp to their aresenal as their main amp. The only thing i couldn't get this amp to sound like is a Piano. It truly is a Valve King!

Exceptional Tube Amp

By Jared

from Woodstock GA

Comments about Peavey Valve King Half-Stack:

To say the least i think this amp is incredible. my biggest problem was i wasn't getting the crunch i had been searching for but i was advised to purchase an MXR ten band EQ pedal to spike the levels and that did the trick. Alot of people say this amp can't do metal but as far as i am concerned with the mxr pedal this thing will put august burns red to shame. The warm sound that the tubes give your distortion just really make your tone that much better, and not to mention the overdrive channel will make you wonder if its a peavey or a fender blues deluxe. the clean channel is admirable but this amp was made to shred. or atleast thats whjy i bought it . Good job Peavey !

A freakin awsome amp!

Comments about Peavey Valve King Half-Stack:

I used to be a big solid state fan but once I plugged into the Peavy Valveking my search was over because I had found an amp that was versatile and could fit all my needs, I recently purchesed a Valveking stack and founs that its live tone is one of the greatest things in my opinion, the distortion is great and so is the clean, plus the tubes that come stock are high quality and it is an all around great amp!

What an awesome Amp!!!!

By Erick

Comments about Peavey Valve King Half-Stack:

I started looking for a new amp when my line 6 Spider II 2x12 started failing on me about three months ago. The effect/volume pods would move by them selves when the volume was turned up. Then more serious problems came. For example the amp wouldۡnt turn on before gigs (that was stressful and scary). This was my chance for a new amp and I wanted a tube amp. Since my buddy/2nd guitar player in my band had a 3000 Marshall half stack I new the way it sounded and I LOVED IT!!! But I didnۡt want to spend 3000 dollars. So started looking for a combo amp but then I stumbled on to a Valve King half stack. I did my research on the amp and returned a couple days later with my fender strat guitar which has Mud rod pickups and a LR Baggs X-Bridge. I played it for a while and I was sold. The Amp is a great buy. At first I wasnۡt sure, just because it was a peavey. You all know that when we think about peavey we think ۡ̏beginners ampۡݕ_. Let me tell you, Peavy stepped it up 100 times. The sound and quality of this amp is unbelievable. They have this new patent feature called ۡ̏textureۡݕ_. This allows you to go from Class A amp, in between amp, and to Class A/B amp. The tonal possibilities are endless. Since I keep the texture in a class A settings the tube sound is so creamy and warm. Personally since I play a lot of blues, Funk and Classic rock, style guitar I like to scoop the mids, and bass to a get a great creamy and warm sound. The Distortion is great also, itۡs not metal qualities but there are pedals to fix that problem. The speaker Cab can take lows and highs of the amp head with out a problem. The one thing I kinda donۡt like about the amp is the power tubes. The Valve King has 6L6 power tubes, this tubes make the sound kinda muddy when its in the clean channel, so Iۡm planning to change the tubes to some Mesa Boogie power tubes. That should change the sound dramatically. Since Iۡve been gigging with the Valve King for the past two months Iۡve been impressed and happy with this investment. The other guitar player is also impressed with the amp (since he helped me research it). He knows more about amps then I do, he was blown away by how it can keep up with his Marshall. On top of all of this itۡs under 1000 dollars, which is great on the wallet. If your looking for a, reliable and awesome tone half stack this is it. Buy It!!!!

Wish I still had it...

Comments about Peavey Valve King Half-Stack:

One of the best amps I've ever owned. The amp has an exceptional clean channel, versatile lead channel, and all for under a grand. The clean channel is on par with some of the best I've heard, certainly better than a 5150 or XXX. Cleans are clear and very natural sounding, not over processed like a lot of other amps. Clean channel reacts well with effects. The lead channel is where this thing really shines. First off, run a jumper cable between the in and out jacks for the effects loop for more gain and presence as well as tightening up the lows, mids, and the gain. After this, the amp screams. Anything from really low end high gain, to extreme presence to good 80's drive or even modern metal. One of those amps that every time you play along to another song, you think the tone should sound like yours. Plays best around 2-5 on volume. Only downfall is that the higher notes aren't very smooth, but it's not bad enough to take away a star on the rating. Number one best thing, sustain.

Good buy.

Comments about Peavey Valve King Half-Stack:

I really like this amp! I've owned several different amp combos, and stacks over the 15 years that I have been playing guitar. I would say that this is pretty equivelant to a Marshall. It is a straight-forward 2-channel (clean/distortion) amp. My only complaint is that is doesn't come with a foot-switch. In fact they don't even offer one you can buy. So you have to buy a generic footswitch in order to switch between channels while playing. Good amp overall, but GREAT amp for the money.

Comments about Peavey Valve King Half-Stack:

I LOVE THIS AMP!!!!! At first about 3 years ago.I loved the vox Valvetronix and i couldnt play anything else. then around 2 months ago i tried out the peavey valveking. It blew My mind It has sweet clean sound with good tone and a bright switch. Then the lead channel is killer you can play anything from Stevie Ray Vaughn up to Eddie Van Halen and Bullet for my Valentine. This amp is very versitile and all tube power. Also the texture knob lets you fine tune the amp to your exact sound. Peavey Blows Marshall Out of the water with sound and definetly pricing. Rock On with This Peavey amp you won't Regret it!

Comments about Peavey Valve King Half-Stack:

I got this amp about a month ago and i absolutely love it. The tubes sound amazing and it really kicks out the sound. The distortion is great as is even when the volume is high. the clean channel is great too. I play through a les paul studio and it sounds great through this amp. I love the all tube power. The texture control and dampening effects are nice and can really help you get the tone you are looking for. It is a great price for what you get and i absolutely love my peavey.

A truly perfect metal amp

Comments about Peavey Valve King Half-Stack:

I bought this off one of my buddies a couple months ago, and this amp is just... Wow! It's got some amazing tone, awesome crunch and gain, and still has the beautiful clean channel that makes it able to do pretty much anything. I put the master volume at 4 and it shook the walls in my room. You do the math. All around great amp, perfect for gigging, and also making this your personal amp on the road.

love this!

Comments about Peavey Valve King Half-Stack:

This amp was my dream amp because I knew peavey never disappoints and I saw the price it was at compared to their other stacks and heads they have. all I have to say is that I love this amp and its the best amp I've ever had! people say it can't do metal and they'd rather get a good line 6, well those people don't know what they're talking about. of course like most amps you want to build your own sound so you'd get effect pedals so boost up the distortion or to block out unwanted noise and that's pretty common. that's what I did and this amp is just a beast now! I recommend this to everyone who wants a half stack because of the amazing clean channel and the distortion that you can even get a great sound out of without pedals!
