Got an email from Musicians Friend last week say $60 off anything $299 for the weekend. So I called my local Guitar Center to see if they had some in stock and said they would match the price. I went to Guitar Center in Towson Maryland to try it out. I tried an Ibanez dual humbucker electric guitar and a start and both sound really good with great tone and punch. Then I got a Yamaha thin body acoustic guitar and put on one of the Trace Acoustic amp models they have sampled and wow it sounded great to me. Even has an acoustic guitar simulator for the electric guitar that sounds okay to me and will work in a pinch. So they matched the price and I bought it. That is what I paid for just one rack effect back in the day. I will not play a bass through it as I think this will cause issues and I have a bass amp for that anyway. One thing I did discover when I got home is you do not need the Sanpera foot pedal to access all the presets as with the last version of the Vypyr did I think as I use a Digitech RP1 and a Rockman Midi foot controller. I was kind of bummed Peavey the got rid of some of the great amp models I love in my current Vypyr like the Dlx, Jsx, Rec, Plexi, and the Dzl. I love Peavey amps but you need at least a Mesa Boogie Rec or a Marshall Plexi to cover some of the older play style and sound. I have not had a lot of time to really give it an in depth overall try but the interface on the VIP 3 is very easy to use once you know how it works. Now I have an electric/acoustic amp for $240 that I can take to church run my electric and acoustic into an a/b box and I am set. How can you beat that. Go try one for yourself and I think you will really be impressed with it.

I had a tough time making a decision between the VIP 3 and one of the similar priced Fender Mustangs. This was to be used for practice and messing around at home, so all the models and Sanpera 2 functionality sold me on the Peavey.

Guitar Center has the VIP 1 & 2 in stock, the 3 is a site to store item where I'm at. I ordered and when the first one arrived it was dead right out of the box. It just continually reset with the LCD flickering and not even getting to a full power-on state.

I took it back to the store where the GC employees verified my findings and ordered me another one. I got the second one right at the start of Summer so didn't spend a lot of time with it. About a week ago, I found out there was a major problem with that one too. On almost all of the sound models, including the default Legend model (the one the amp boots up into), there is a long and loud crackling noise in the sustained note.

By the time I discovered this, I was past the 45 day return window so now my second VIP 3 with about 2 hours of use on it is sitting at a Peavey Warranty repair center. I just have a bad feeling about this thing at this point.

Deceptive

By john conway

from Atlanta GA

Comments about Peavey VYPYR VIP 3 100W 1x12 Guitar Modeling Combo Amp:

This is no doubt a cool amp, but Peavey is deceptive in its advertising in not including an important bit of information, viz. that this amp is designed to be used with instruments that have "passive electronics", i.e. passive pickups. The only way you learn of this is by reading the owner's manual. What this means practically is that if your guitar has higher output active humbuckers, your going to get a lot of bad feedback on the high gain amp model settings unless you drastically roll the volume nob way down, something that humbuckers tend to not respond to real well. Peavey should be more up front about this feature.

Cool Effects, Poor Sound Quality

By Derek Bedell

from Maryland

Comments about Peavey VYPYR VIP 3 100W 1x12 Guitar Modeling Combo Amp:

Its got great features and a competitive price, but it seriously lacks in sound quality. The effects are not capable of making up its inherent lack of sound depth. There is no punchiness whatsoever as its output is very limited within a high-mid range frequency. This is very disappointing, considering the fact that it's supposed to be versatile in modeling other instruments such as bass (It definitely does not produce the frequencies at which a bass would play). Compared to other low price 100w combo amps with extensive features, this amp is inferior; I would recommend something like the Line 6 Spider or the Fender Mustang. This is just my opinion; but if you are interested in the amp, you should at least try it out before purchasing.

Comments about Peavey VYPYR VIP 3 100W 1x12 Guitar Modeling Combo Amp:

I've had this amp for years, I can no longer switch through my channels and after a few live performances this thing began to lack in tone, I was in a metal band and used it for about 3 or 4 shows and it worked great, after that it began to just fall down hill from there, I am not impressed with the quality control from the company. The overall build of the amp is poorly constructed At this point, the only thing I use it for is a nice night table that I can make noise... really disappointed with the product, you do not get what you pay for...

    Good display. Good setup.

    By Donna Yarbrough

Comments about Peavey VYPYR VIP 3 100W 1x12 Guitar Modeling Combo Amp:

I had a problem with mine at first. It would hum loudly with the post-gain turned up or when adding an effect. The third day I had it I took it to a Peavey repair shop. They took it apart and put it back together and no hum. They think the input jack was loose thus not making a good ground connection. I could have taken it back but it seems this amp was in short supply in February. Now it is a good amp. I like the display on the VIP 3. The display of items available is easy to read and choose from. It is very easy to operate. To get out of demo mode is a menu item that is reached by holding the Amp knob down, under the display, until the menu appears. Then selecting the item with the Instrument/Stompbox knob, also under the display. Edit mode is simply a push of a knob too. Saving a new preset to a location is something you have to read the manual to do. There are only 77 unique presets already assigned to the beginning of the memory banks. The rest of the 400 memory banks are those 77 over and over. When you are changing the amp in a preset it changes the per-amp, low, mid, high, and post-amp because each amp has those items preset. It is annoying that you can't keep a preset's settings and change amps. This also applies to changing the level on the amp - clean, crunch, or lead. Each one has its own settings. All the presets would sound the same if you changed them to the same amp. One last thing about the setup of the presets. Each knob has lights around it to show where the knob is set, but if you look at the display you will see that turning the knob is really a number. This number changes when you turn the knob but it never shows you where the knob is set to start with. I do like this amp. It is easy to use once you read the manual which is online for you to read before you buy the amp. It is a little hard to follow at first but you get the hang of it quickly. And this amp dose do electric, acoustic, and bass guitars by choosing the right amp. It will fit any environment because of it's ability to go from 100w all the way to 1w, and everything in between. The Fender Mustang III was just loud even with the gain down. Good for a gig, I suppose, but not a home.

    Peavey VYPYR VIP 3 100w 1x12

    By James Lowe

    from Columbus, Ohio

Comments about Peavey VYPYR VIP 3 100W 1x12 Guitar Modeling Combo Amp:

I bought this amp after extensively researching after seeing some ads for it. I live in an Apartment so sometimes LOUD isn't an option, so the sponge is a nice feature and works very well! The local store was out of stock on this, so had to have it shipped, everything was great on shipping from GC store in Dayton! You don't need the Sanpera pedal (Saving you @ $229 extra!), unless you want to use looper, so the 400 pre-sets are available by rotating knob after guitar input. The only somewhat bad thing about pre-sets are not much of a difference from 1 set to another! There are quite a few sub-sets and then the breakdown of the subsequent sub-sets! Remember you get to use electric Guitar/Bass/Acoustic with this amp so it takes some "turning and learning" on it! You get quite a bit of pedals/stomp box/Amp makes to play with here so it's almost better to use the accessibility of those to create your sounds than some of the pre-sets! The pre-sets are kind of fun to play around with but they almost seem to be "deeper levels" of the amount of the already loaded effects there in lies the "fun" of playing with them! You CAN play with the parameters of EVERYTHING Pedal/Stomp box-wise to go as crazy or lazy as you want to experiment and learn for sounds on this also! If you're not sure what genre you want to play (Funk, Metal, Classic Rock, Blues, etc!) it's a good amp to sample the different sounds and see where you want to go or just play'em ALL! Price isn't horrific and if you decide to lock in on 1 style/genre of music you should be fine with this amp! The Quality of this amp is very good and expectations are not overboard as some of the pre-sets are just ok but that happens with a modeling amp! Weighs about 31#s, so not a moose on portability! Some of the presets are really quiet and some are LOUD (Hendrix presets!) Overall I'd say this amp is worth the $299 for what you get especially the Synth and the E-Violin effects are good, to me at least! Try 1 out and see what you think! I've had this amp a little over 1 month!

    Great Sounding Amp

    By KEVIN SELLERS

Comments about Peavey VYPYR VIP 3 100W 1x12 Guitar Modeling Combo Amp:

I play acoustic, electric and bass for the church where I am Pastor (switching instruments for various songs). We play country gospel. I purchased this amp so I wouldn't have so many different amplifiers cluttering up our small platform; I LOVE IT! It has great sound and fills the room whichever of the three I am playing at the time. Thank you Peavey for finding a way to meet my need for Variable Instrument Performance (VIP) and at a great price with great sound. ONLY PEAVEY could do this.

My VIP 3 has no issues and is Superb in sound and function. Boredom is unobtainable with just only the Amp choices and gain types. I had to buy a Squier bass to enjoy the full sonic potential. There is no speaker out cause the Special speaker/amp marriage will not work with other conventional amp speakers. I am a lucky one who has had no real problems with the VIP 3, except it used to give me the impression that my guitar had died if I removed the cable from the amp jack and then plugged back in( to save wear on guitar/ Strat jacks) BUT then there must be an instrument type sensor circuit that could trip this behavior-maybe updates fixed it? The dials are so silky smooth(should be turned gradually). I look at this amp in astonishment sometimes even if I have gotten used to things like Amplitube. Most could not even dream of such real tubey sounding, feature packed, ANALOG laden Wonder of a device at this price(!!!)- I guess less than ten years ago. It's a gem and that's what I call it when I tell other players to look it up.

More than enough power for gigs.

Amp would be absolutely perfect if it had a speaker-out to plug into a cabinet.

As soon as I got this amplifier, I plugged in and played with it. After a few days I visited the Peavey website, updated the firmware, and began to learn how to use it! The Vyper Edit software opens a whole new world - creating presets, saving them to my computer, loading them to the amp banks, etc. I play guitar and bass, so the flexibility of the amp amazes me! It takes time and effort to learn anything worthwhile, and THIS is definitely worthwhile! I can't wait to grab a Sanpera foot switch to take full advantage of the VIP 3!

      Buy this amp.

      By Allen

      from undisclosed

      Verified Buyer

Comments about Peavey VYPYR VIP 3 100W 1x12 Guitar Modeling Combo Amp:

I cannot recommend this amp enough.

Take your time, learn the options, *take your time* setting up your presets how you like them. You won't be disappointed. If you have any variety at all in your playing, this is the amp for you. Playing some blues? Buy a fender twin or get this amp. Like metal? Buy a 6505 or get this amp. Like classic rock? Get a vintage tube amp... or get this amp. Like all three and more? Spend thousands of dollars on different amplifiers to get the right sounds for your different styles... or, buy this amp. And that's ONLY talking about the amp modelling capabilities.

You have tons of cool options for effects, which I love having built in, but, frankly, the real reason I'm appreciating this amp more and more is the fact that I can dial in the perfect vintage sound for classic rock, I can get great metallica distortions (early, nineties, and current), I can get the right tone for the music I'm playing. Couple of kinks songs in your repertoire? Brit amp just needs tweaking to your tastes and guitar. Throw in an acoustic set. Trade off with your bass player. Play the keyboard. You can do just about anything you could want with this amp. It won't cook you eggs in the morning, but you'll love it anyways.

ps. Its *LOUD*, but the power sponge works so well that its even better as a practice amp in low volume situations than the vip1.

pps. There's a learning curve. TAKE YOUR TIME learning and setting this amp up how you like it. < - entirely worth it.

ppps. Get the sanpera. I or II... either one, but you'll want it. Also, I suggest setting up several channels with clean and dirty presets and one particular amp model per channel. Leave out the effects until you dial your tone the way you want it with that amp, THEN put in your effects, THEN get your volume from one preset to the others leveled across the four presets in that channel.

pppps. Its smaller & lighter than you expect, easy to move. Keeps up with the band though

Being an intermediate guitar player and not really know how to use post amps and pre amps and other settings, this amp is a blessing. Because it has presets of different sounds that you only need to turn the dial to pick, you can play all kinds of music really easy. From metal to acoustic to funk everything sounds great and I went from playing about 30 minutes a day to going for over an hour.
