I know you're not reading this to learn all about me but I think my experiences definitely add to the appeal of this amp & better explains why it kicks a. I play mostly metal/metalcore/djent/jazz stuff. I play an Agile Septor Elite 8 string with EMG 808s. I've been playing for 15+ years, I've owned all kinds of tube, solid state, & hybrid heads & combos. Some good, some not so good. I've been a die hard fan of Line 6 from the beginning. Despite the naysayers, they have a loyal following & for good reason. I've owned several Line 6 amps & I've been relying on my original red bean POD as my main practice/recording tool for at least the last 10 years. (I tried the newer HD version as well but it just wasn't for me) There's just something so right about the original & I've gotten so much praise over my tone over the years, thanks mostly to my POD. I will say Line 6 does metal exceptionally well & it's been my go-to since forever but I think it's finally met its match. I'm genuinely astounded at the tones coming out of this amp. First things first, I've owned a block letter 5150 stack, a Valveking 100 stack, & a 6505+ 112 combo & I tell you what, this amp can get so close to those amps it's amazing! Not in terms of volume of course but the tonal dynamics, responsiveness, & overall sound, just WOW. The level of tonal quality & characteristics can be heard on all the other amp models too. It takes a lot to impress me & I'm impressed. It's the amp I never knew I needed so much. This amp, & frankly the entire Vypyr series, is a true diamond in the rough. Seriously, tone gurus, tube purists, & gear snobs alike need to set aside their biases & give this amp an honest chance. Trust me, I get the appeal of the "real deal amps" & they're amazing but, & maybe it's just me, why should I fork over stupid amounts of money for the genuine article when I can spend a fraction on something that sounds SO close? I'm over the phase of caring what others think of my gear, for me it's all about the tone &, to quote Metallica, nothing else matters. This thing is good for solo practice, band practice, & you can mic it on stage. Who cares that it's small & it's not an expensive boutique tube amp? I should also mention I'm a dad & husband & I work for a living so good deals like this are a godsend for me. Family is so much more important than gear so thank you Peavey for offering this kind of quality at such a small price. I stumbled upon & purchased the original 15w Vypyr not too long ago & was so impressed with the tone it produced I sold it & got the updated/upgraded model. The difference between the 2...well the 20w is more powerful/louder of course, noticeably better overall build quality, an added 3/4 rear speaker enclosure (thank you! much tighter/deeper bass response!), addition of bass/acoustic modeling, the list just goes on & on as far as features go. Guys I really believe Peavey is onto something here & I have no doubt that history will prove that I'm right. People are going to start taking notice, it's only a matter of time & I hope it helps change the whole dynamic for other amp manufacturers. You CAN give customers good tone & quality without asking for their soul &/or entire savings! Now that technology has come this far, it's obvious things in the industry are going to start changing & I'm proud to be part of that shift. I don't know about you guys but I've already spent enough money on gear! Thanks again Peavey, you deserve all the praise in the world & you'd be a fool not to purchase one of these amps. BUY THE AMP!

As I was waiting on a sales rep at guitar Center to finish up a purchase I made, I though I would grab a guitar (white American Strat with a maple neck) and plug into something in the meantime. As I don't like playing loud, I noticed these little Peavey Vypers on the floor; I chose the smallest one. I fiddled with all the dials, randomly going through amp models and effects and found some useful tones. The last combination that I concocted was a magical one between amp and guitar. I played inspired. Wow, gotta remember the name of this little amp for later reference. My sales guy was ready. We closed the deal and I went home with that guitar and amp combo sound still in my mind.

Later that evening I YouTubed the VIP-1 and came across an excellent demo. I was impressed with the direct recording tones the guy was getting into his DAW via the USB port. As I needed something that would mute the speaker for night recording, I thought this would be a nice addition to other recording equipment I have. That's it; I was going in the next day and buying one!

Bought the amp and brought it home. I installed all that was on the DVD that came with the amp, plugged the USB in, and ... nothing. I'm using Sonar X1 under Windows7. The Peavey website resource page for downloads and updates was no help at all, as it only has the Reaper and Amp programs for download. Nothing about the USB driver. Googled said issue. Read a lot. I went on the Peavey amp forum and was not too surprised to find many people having same problem; their computer/DAW would not recognize the Vyper's USB driver. I even tried the Asio4all driver, as was recommended, but to no avail. As my main reason for the purchase was for recording without a mic, the amp failed its purpose. BTW; I did try the phones out, which did mute the speaker, but I was not impressed with the tones I was getting from that jack. Maybe I'll look the amp up at a later date when Peavey figures out the USB issue.

Comments about Peavey VYPYR VIP 1 20W 1x8 Guitar Modeling Combo Amp:

This was an exchange for a lesser amp for personal use by me from G.C. in Winter Park, FL.
I play a solid body with P-90s through it.
You can not beat this for the money, or even for more money. The amp is sturdily built with solid controls. The controls are intuitive. The effects may not be as deep as having a fully loaded pedal board but sound great and a good way to find where you want to upgrade at some point.
The speaker is LOUD. I practice with it on 0.5 and my guitar's volume on 2 or 3. The clean channels are clear and bright with plenty of ways to add distortion and break up your sound.
This is the second Vyper I've purchased. The first was for bought someone else. I made the mistake of buying another modeler for me and returned it within two days.
This amp is a keeper! Before you buy another amp in this price range try this one.
I recommend this for beginner to experienced.

Comments about Peavey VYPYR VIP 1 20W 1x8 Guitar Modeling Combo Amp:

Just got the amp home and plugged it in; LOVE IT! it has so many settings and sounds so clean and crisp although I have replacement pickups- (Joe Barden for Danny Gatton) - (the telecaster guru)and not sure if it's the pickups or the amp or both that makes it so clear and crisp! Anyway, I really love that amp! My wife likes it too! I basically bought it for the porch or living room so I don't have to lug my 100 watt Fender Mustang up and down the stairs and to be honest, I would have never bought the Mustang amp if I tried the VIP 1 first - it is VERY loud and I play it at about 2 or 3 volume! It has any kind of reverb or delay or tremolo as u go thru the settings that anyone really needs; also crunch and distortion that I don't use - I don't play metal or hard rock; I'm 72 yrs old and coming out of guitar retirement! Best move I ever made!! Love to hear the sounds and notes!! The Guitar Center was very helpful and love to deal with these guys - true professionals!

Good for guitar, horrible for bass

    By Ian

    from Boise, Idaho

Comments about Peavey VYPYR VIP 1 20W 1x8 Guitar Modeling Combo Amp:

While I would say that it is a great little amp for guitar, plenty of settings and sounds to choose from (the reverse setting is a must!), however, this would have to be one of the worst amps for a bass (ironic considering that it is marketed primarily as a bass amp). Unless you have the low turned waaaaay down it will buzz and kill the note like you would not believe. Quite honestly I would rather have a 10 watt starter bass amp than this, the only decent bass sound I can get out of it is when I plug my headphones into it. To summarize: if you are getting this for a guitar, go for it; for a bass? Avoid at all cost.

This is a very powerful and versatile amp! I've used it for acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass, and even cello! It sounds amazing and can emulate most any type of amp to fit the style of music you are playing or recording. I only wish it had a midi and a direct out jack.

    Great value for the money

    By Adam Simon

    from Louisville, KY

Comments about Peavey VYPYR VIP 1 20W 1x8 Guitar Modeling Combo Amp:

A great little amp for the money. I looked at the comparable Marshall MG15 and the Fender Mustang and decided on the Peavey. If you like the fancy digital stuff, then you may want to consider the Mustang. The Marshall didn't seem to have quite as many features and was a little more expensive. The Peavey is as straightforward as you can get as far as the settings go. The clean acoustic setting worked well with my effects pedals. The channels have great pre-sets that can be easily tweaked to however you like them. Last but not least it's pretty loud. I have to keep it under 5 before the wife and kids complain about the noise and that's in a pretty sound-proof music room.

    Is it just me?

    By Andrew Wukusick

    from Waynesfield, Ohio

Comments about Peavey VYPYR VIP 1 20W 1x8 Guitar Modeling Combo Amp:

I got this amp a few months ago as a travel/practice amp for jam sessions with the band, it seemed like a nice little practice amp with lots of good effects, but no matter what I use distortion wise, it always has this weird loud hum swell for a second after I silence a note. Even low amounts of gain on the amp's distortion does this. I usually love Peavey, but this amp isn't worth the money. Line 6's Spider seems to work better imo.

Fantastic amp, insane bargain for what you get.

    By Chris Newell

    from Little Rock, AR

Comments about Peavey VYPYR VIP 1 20W 1x8 Guitar Modeling Combo Amp:

I can't believe this an is as inexpensive as it is. It really is the best solid state am I have ever played through. All of the amps and effects in this thing are perfectly modeled after the real things. I own a 6505+ and can vouch that the 6505+ model in the VIP1 sounds exactly like the real deal. The bass guitar and acoustic guitar models that can be used with an electric guitar sound genuine and not cheesy. They did a great job with that. The Vpyyr Edit software that you can download and use with this amp is great and makes fine tuning all of the settings and presets even easier than it already is on the amp itself. This amp also comes with Peavey's Revalver software. This amp is plenty loud for small performances and practicing with a band. It's lightweight and sounds fantastic!
