Comments about Peavey 6505+ 120W Guitar Amp Head:

I bought this amp after years of putting it off because I didn't need so much power, but there is almost nothing that can beat the sound of this amp. Realistically at home or rehearsals you're never going to get past 1.5-2 on the volume but it still sounds crisp and defined. Cleans are bright and bitey, may not be for everyone but will still do the job, especially with use of effect pedals. The thing weighs a ton and I've seen sporadic reports of reliability being an issue, but in careful hands, you won't see a problem with this amp.

If you play metal, you NEED this amplifier. And if you're stuck between the 6505+ or the 6534+, the 34 is going to sound like a Marshall, if you want the iconic 6505 tone but are unsure which ones better, this is the one to get.

    6505+

Comments about Peavey 6505+ 120W Guitar Amp Head:

On it's own, the Peavey 6505+ is a pretty one dimensional amp, but what it does well it does better than just about any other head on the market. I have only owned mine for a couple of weeks, but have been playing through borrowed 6505+ or 6505's since as long as Ive been playing live in hardcore and punk bands. I have never gotten a more evil sounding distorted tone from any other amp like I have with the lead channel of the 6505+. It's actually almost unnecessary the amount of gain this thing packs. Playing through EMGs or humbuckers with this amp brings out the best combination of dense and crisp crunch that retains its shape, even in dropped tunings (I typically play in half step or drop C#). I also like to put a TS9-DX in front of it when playing live to add an extra punch that really cuts through a mix. The clean channel on its own leaves something to be desired. It sounds fairly flat and lifeless, but pedals exist for a reason and can turn the clean tone into something great. Some chorus and delay give the channel the brightness it so desperately lacks and cranking the lows on the eq adds quite a bit of depth to the tone. I've also found you can get a decent Fender-like distorted tone by running a fuzz with chorus and delay on the clean channel. Overall, this is a great amp. The seperate eq's for the rhythm and lead channels are enough of a reason to buy this over the standard 6505. It's built like a brick but isn't noticeably more heavy or unwieldy than any amp outside of a Tiny Terror. I also love the simple but mean look the amp has going for it. I give the lead channel a 5, clean gets a 2 (but can be bumped up to a 4 with the right pedals), and looks and durability get a 5, with leaves it with an average of 4/5.

    Great amp

Comments about Peavey 6505+ 120W Guitar Amp Head:

I received this amp with bad and mixed brand preamp tubes. The clean channel was too low and crunch bottom was ineffective. But after I changed the tubes with six of JJ tubes that I had in my storage, everything become normal with this amp. Now it sounds great in all channels and modes. This is a wonderful amp. It has my favorite metal tone without any pedal. The clean channel is acceptable and I think it can be better with some pedals. No need for pedal in crunch mode or lead channel, at least for me.

I Tip my hat to Peavey 6505+

    By Ty Schultz _

Comments about Peavey 6505+ 120W Guitar Amp Head:

Seeing I bought my 2nd 6505+ at GC I thought I would drop my 2 cents on this head ~ (Full discloser I still have my 1st head I ever bought the 6505+ For the sale price I couldnt pass up getting a second one) Even off Sale this is the one your looking for to buy. For 3 years of bouncing around in the back of a Box Truck from here & there & I have had NO issues at all with my 1st head,This things a TANK & Looks like a just bought it the other day ,When I show up for sound check or the Practice~Hall its like greating a old friend = ) Now as far as this being a metal only head,I would like to disagree a bit on this part....Your looking for a tube head so I'm betting you have the pedals to go with it = ) I can Dial in a Albert King,SRV,Stone's,Beatles,Chuck Berry Tone in a Blink of a eye not a problem. Now as far as Playing Metal ~ YEA this is it !!! Stop looking The versitility of this head is is amazing I can do the 5FDP,Trivium,Slayer,Megadeth tones & drop to a Alice Cooper/AC}DC Tone at a drop of a hat. I do recommend you also get a Sonic Stomp ,Sonic Maximizer by BBE (IT IS NOT A EQ,READ ABOUT IT) as you should have with any tube amp & Monster Cables (They DO MAKE A DIFFERNCE) (Just my thoughts here)I have been through so many Cable's & Pedal's over the years & I ALWAYS come back to these Brands to work best with my Peavey no matter what type of music I play Slow & Steady Wins as long as it's LOUD =)

Great amp!! when you think peavey you dont really think to much but it is a really great amp. I play in a pop punk band and this amp works perfect.I changed out the power tubes to mesa and the pres are mesa and gt. after changing the tubes it fits my style perfect.the lead channel is brighter, cleans are cleaner and the tone on the clean and crunch are deeper. Dont get me wrong the stock tubes arent bad,I just changed them to get a brighter sound which I like

GREAT but there is slightly better out there

Comments about Peavey 6505+ 120W Guitar Amp Head:

i bought this amp 2 months ago and had it for about a week it has an unbelievable sound and i loved it but when i went back to guitar center the following week after i got they got in a used 5150 II so i played it and found that the 5105 had more low end gain which was exactly what i wanted so i ended up trading up. the 6505+ is an unbelievable amp but for a metalcore / post hardcore tone, you would have to go with the 5150 in my opinion. i ended up having some problems with my particular 5150 so just today i brought it back and am now waiting for a 6534+ to come in which is supposed to have the 5150 feel. i will deffinitly play the 6505+ and the 6534+ back to back before i bring the 34 home and i will write another review comparing the 2. but all in all the 6505 is deffinitly worth the money.

    A beast of a machine

Comments about Peavey 6505+ 120W Guitar Amp Head:

I bought this amp less than a week ago, and I'm running it through a Mesa Rectifier 4x12 cabinet; the two combined are flatout amazing! I know a lot of people are complaining about the clean channel not being so clean, but once you have it dialed in just right, it is nice and crisp with a hint of sexy bite. And let's be honest, if you're buying this amp for the shear beefy-brutalness of the distortion (which it TOTALLY is), then you won't need a whole heck of a lot of super-cleans anyway. This amp is loud, and sounds amazing! I would recommend this to any serious guitar player. Best I've played on in 15 years.

Amazing Tone at an Amazing Price

    By hardrocker9000

Comments about Peavey 6505+ 120W Guitar Amp Head:

Ive had this amp for 2 1/2 months now and i absolutley love it! i got it as a christmas present and was extremely thrilled. im gonna tell you straight up that the people that say that this amp is only for death metal are most likely deaf. i get tones out of this this that range from Zeppelin to KISS to Iron Maiden to Metalllica and Megadeth without turining the gain up past 6. this amp does have the most gain you will ever get from an amp but remember people that dosent mean that you have to turn the gain knob up to 10! my gain settings are usually between 4 and 6 and i get a wide variety of jucy thick tones. now i dont play death metal so i cant give my opinion for that but this amp is neck and neck with marshall for playing hard rock and heavy metal if you dial in your settings right. the clean/rythym channel is decent but that probably isnt why your buying this amp. but it is extremely frustrating to dial in the right sound so dont give up. you need to give it some time. it took me the whole 2 and a half months that ive owned it to find my sound but now that i have it nothing beats it. if you are thinking about buying this amp dont hesitate.GO BUY IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Metal God - But So Much More!

    By A. Grubb

    from Chicago, IL.

Comments about Peavey 6505+ 120W Guitar Amp Head:

This amp is a complete metal juggernaut! I've had the pleasure of playing one multiple times, both live and in a personal setting, and while I don't own one, I can assure you I will the second I have the money. Of course, it's really freaking loud, and really comes to life when you crank it, but it still retains great tone at "bedroom" volumes. I've played it on top of a Mesa/Boogie 4x12 Rectifier cab and then a B-52 4x12, and both times, it just screamed! But, what came as a huge surprise was how good the clean channel sounded. It had really warm, buttery tone, and also got really bright and really "sparkled." Just a completely amazing amp. Don't listen to anyone who says that Peavey is a ghetto version of Mesa/Boogie amps (I have heard people say that before)! My perfect amp...only complaint, no reverb, but that can be dealt with, and is definitely not a down side, just a minor set back. BUY THIS AMP.
