  • Stop looking and buy this head

As reviewed by Bad Brad on 4/23/2007

I recently bought this head and I can tell you right now, if you are looking for a super sweet tube head, you need to look no further. I have been a Peavey guy since I bought my first 212 Classic in 76 (which I still own and play). I also have a 100 watt XL Supreme solid state head with a 4X12 cab. My Classic went into the shop to be retubed and I got thinking it would be nice to have a tube head to drop on top of the Supreme cabinet, so I started shopping around. I listened to the Marshalls to the Crates and everything else even out of the price range and the ValveKing is far and away the best SOUNDING head I played through. It is really hard to describe the way it sounds. But it is almost like the guitar takes on another dimension of harmonics. When messing around I normally crank up the distortion, but with the ValveKing the clean channel sounds SOO good that I leave it on the clean channel most of the time. I have a Aphex harmonic exciter and a Microverb in the effects loop. That just adds to the sweet sound of this thing. Yes the reverb is not too hot, that is my only complaint, but with the Microverb, I don't need it anyway. Close your eyes, don't look at the price tag. You can save yourself some time and stop looking and buy.

  • a good band for your buck

As reviewed by richardwadd on 1/29/2008

With a background in Metal and Hardcore, I needed an amp that would give the tone of a 6505+, but not for as much as the 6505+. I bought this head not expecting to be impressed, but without running any pedals through the VK, it really had a good tone. The VK only has 2 channels, but when the Gain and Volume boosts, it can really seem like 3. The Texture knob, which allows either Class A or Class A/B, really brings a variety of sound to this amp. The stock tubes the VK are Sovteks, which I recommend swapping with Tungsol 12ax7 and JJ 6L6's for a better tone. And if you decide to have a little extra money, I highly advise picking up a BBE Sonic Stomp and The Boss NS-2 to clarify your tone and really bring this amp to life. All in all, this amp and the BBE Sonic Stomp really go together to give you good tone

  • AMAZING!!!!!!!

As reviewed by A. Grubb on 4/5/2010

This amp rocks! I'm in a metal band, and I'm the only guitarist, so I needed to be loud and heavy and this amp is both. It's amazing that at such a ridiculously low price, this amp kicks so much butt! Do NOT listen to all of the people out there that claim that this amp can't do metal...they're WRONG. It has more than enough pre-amp power to pump out any kind of metal, from thrash to death metal and everywhere in between. It also roars with rock tone, and the texture knob is fantastic. You can literally get nearly any tone out of it because of that knob. The clean is pristine and clear, but it's a Peavey, that's expected. This amp is great for players of any genre that are on a budget and need tube tone and power. Try one out and see for yourself!
