an in depth review, LOTS of fun

Comments about Pearl The Hip Kit:

I play hand drums, ie congas, djembes, and doumbeks, and really wanted to get into frame drums. this tunable gives the range of pitch from low to mid-high that covers most of what I was looking for to sound more like some traditional middle eastern frame drums. I've tuned mine low enough that I can apply pressure to the head skin and pitch bend/blend the surprisingly flexible head nicely without it sounding "dead". it is still tight enough to make a good response, resonance and a lasting after tone. of course, hand pressure bending the tone does dampen the after tone resonance much like any other hand played drum head. in the store, I tried the demo sample and tuned it up slightly higher for a higher pitch ring. the tension claw bent, popped off and was unable to securely retention the head without slipping repeatedly off the tension ring. it got that dead sound and would not even hold the low tension any longer without bending the claw back to original position, but I feared bending it back would break the claw. the claws are typical for some other brands that I've seen. the go around would be replacing them with other brand types at additional expense, but if tensioned lower, or mid range it should not be an issue. the snare is fun, lots of variety of ways it can be added in to the play. the height is adjustable so it can contact the head tightly to respond like a snare drum, or lightly, only in response to the vibration of the head on a drum stroke or totally off, to contact only on a strike to the attachment, or even not at all. very nice added play toy. the strap I see as a mixed blessing. I can carry the drum with it. I'm getting a case for it anyway though. playing the drum with the strap places the drum against the body for the most part so it muffles the drum, very little resonance at all with it like this. if you play with a traditional upright or lap or even free hand frame drum style, no worries, this against the body style will have to grow on me but I don't see it doing so. the strap is unnecessary to me. I got it with the kit in order to use the brackets onto the drum to perhaps attach a shaker or jingles down the road. so, mixed feelings about the strap. I love the drum, except for the tension ring claw problem, and one actually "bigger" problem ... I want it in the "bigger" size 18" also, but it's only available as part of a six piece kit. soooo sad, Remo used to sell them individually, but apparently not Pearl. maybe one day. if you want any other sizes, you have to buy a $300 kit. i'll probably get an alternative solution like a Meinl tar by the time Pearl sells them by themselves. I would highly recommend the kit to anyone, or buy the single 14" wood toned drum by itself, the slap snare attachment if you want to mess with the fun possibilities, the strap kit is for that wandering around on the beach playability if you don't use the traditional upright position or if you want to just carry it sans bag. the package deal saves you nothing, but allows you to get it in a cool black finish that I prefer.

Comments about Pearl The Hip Kit:

I bought this little drum to just fool around with, don't call myself a musician or anything buy wanted an additional 'voice' for family drum jams. I saw this in the outlet center and it was low priced enough for me to give it a try. Got it in - and in perfect condition, very well boxed/protected for shipment - and I am very impressed! The variety of rhythms and beats you can introduce with the added snare clip is really cool. I can imagine a real drummer would really have this little thing boppin'. The strap is nice so that you can just walk around and jam with it-read that others weren't happy with the strap and you certainly could upgrade it but the one it comes with gets the job done. I did not have a drum key so that I could play with the tuning but have ordered one now and I'll see if re-tuning the head will wake up even more jam potential. Overall, allowing for the price I paid, I am very pleased with this purchase.
