Top Choice Music Stand

Comments about Peak Music Stands Portable Music Stand:

So many music schools, orchestras, bands and musicians use Manhasset stands because the are steel, heavy so they don't tip over and take abuse on stage. But for me I value portability and things that can be collapsed into the smallest shape/footprint so they are easier to carry to a gig plus are ultra easy to set up and take down after. So I ordered the Peak SMS-50 which has 3 riser sections. Why not the shorter SMS-40? Because you can use the SMS-50 standing up even if you are well over 6'tall yet you can collapse it down low enough to use it seated even if you are a little kid. The Peak SMS-50 is well made. The engineering is very tight. Nothing is sloppy. It is infinitely adjustable and stays at the height you put it, even when loaded up with heavy song books. (I have some really big 3 ring binders and the Peak SMS-50 handles all the weight I pile on. The music desk part itself is a cool engineered design. Yes it is plastic and not steel. But it is fairly thick plastic so it isn't flimsy at all. Ultra easy to unfold and set up, making a nice solid music desk. The collapsible 3 leg design is likewise well executed. Surprisingly stable for something so light weight. I am sure it's going to stay standing unless people get really careless on stage. Hmmm, guess what? People sometimes are careless, whether drinking or not. And non-band members sometimes come up on stage between sets to chat but don't always know how to weave between instruments, mics and music stands. So, probably as much for curiosity as for necessity, I did a simple retrofit that just about makes the Peak SMS-50 clumsy proof. I took off the rubber feet on the 3 legs and found the legs to be totally hollow as expected. That gives ample area to stuff in there any weighty material you want. I considered using discarded lead wheel weights from a local tire shop which they donated to the cause. Ultimately I settled for two things: #1 Galvanized pipe used in construction that has an outside diameter that fits perfectly inside the legs and #2 Solid heavy weight iron rod. Those 2 items added just under 5 lbs weight. I had both materials laying around from previous construction projects. All I needed to do is cut the pieces to length, stuff them in each leg and replace the rubber end caps. You may not want to go through the trouble. I found it fun, interesting and kind of cool to do. What I ended up with is a 9.50 lb. stand with a very low center of gravity that's incredibly stable and yet still has all the portability I need. But even if you don't have the tools or heavy materials or even the remotest desire to stuff anything into the legs, I think this is a fabulous stand right out of the box and deserves to be considered by any serious musician.

Taller than average, easily transportable

By Arthur Carnrick

Comments about Peak Music Stands Portable Music Stand:

I recently had surgery and started transferring all my song books to a tablet as the books were getting too heavy; however, my music stand, though sturdy, was too short when I stood to play. It was impossible to read the music/charts and still look at the audience simultaneously as I was always looking down. I ordered this stand because it was taller and upon receipt I found it was also lighter and could be transported in a bag... which was handy as I play many beach weddings and trying to carry a battery amp, music stand, song books, and guitar in one trip is not easy walking over sand. The stand folds compactly and will still support one of my 10 lb fake books. It is just the right height if I stand to sing and play. I am very satisfied with it.

I bought this for my daughter. She plays the ukulele and needed a portable stand that is easy to fold up & carry and one that is sturdy enough to hold her iPad. This music stand is perfect!! She is very happy with it,

Comments about Peak Music Stands Portable Music Stand:

Size, weight, construction seem to be good. Nice and portable. Handle works well. Has a wide base and is sturdy. Base width doesn't seem to be adjustable, just max and closed. You can fit sheet music inside the bag but have to wrap it around the stand slightly, so for larger books, you will need a separate carrying bag for those things, etc. Tray part is plastic which could be more gentle when instrument accidentally contacts it, unlike the edge of a metal stand.

Love the light weight and the way this stand folds. It is easy to transport, assemble, and disassemble, and it is sturdy. I purchased the aluminum version for lighter weight. The included carry case makes transport very easy.

Comments about Peak Music Stands Portable Music Stand:

A few friends starting using this stand and I found it to be better than my little metal portable stand. It can hold some weight (like a book of music) not just a few sheets. Adjusts to every height you will need. It works well. It is compact and portable at a reasonable weight.

Comments about Peak Music Stands Portable Music Stand:

I'm a volunteer musician and play outdoors a lot. This is easy to get places in its nice carrying case that can be used as a backpack. For the most part the base is metal but the top is plastic but it's. Good quality. One of the nice features is it extends to a height greater than 5'10"- great for the times you are standing and playing. I'd buy it again.
