Overview

The Palatino VE-550 Electric Upright Bass is the answer to many a bass player's prayers. With sweet sound, great looks, and light, portable design, the VE-550 bass has a chambered body of select spruce. The slim, maple neck and curved ebony fingerboard emulate an acoustic upright bass. The Palatino VE-550 bass's adjustable maple bridge rests on the piezo transducer pickup, giving the VE-550 electric upright its large, booming tone.

Geared tuners with metal buttons offer easy, accurate tuning. The Palatino VE-550 bass's black-finished metal tailpiece is sturdy and practical. The lightweight endpin offers an infinite range of adjustment with a positive locking mechanism.

Comments about Palatino VE-550 Electric Upright Bass:

A good EUB for the price. String length is same as standard 3/4 bass, though the length on the far side of the bridge is stubby- hence, you can use strings for 3/4, but will end up wrapping some of the string on the winding post- not a big deal. Talkbass has a mod thread for this model that should be read through as well. I had to sand the fingerboard a bit, as they put black dye in it, which transfers to your hand. Also, put thin rubber under the pick up, and under the bridge feet to get a better upright tone. The tone and volume knob go a long way. It should be run through a pre amp as well- all of this cover on the TB thread. Overall, very happy with it.

Comments about Palatino VE-550 Electric Upright Bass:

I could have given this instrument a much better rating if it had not come to me with some fairly serious and potentially costly issues regarding the fingerboard. The particular instrument that came to me had a fingerboard that was most definitely not straight from nut to end. The instrument was certainly playable, but this condition made it impossible to obtain the action height that would have been required to make this instrument fit-and-ready to gig with for me.

Another relative downside involves the ebony that is used on the fingerboards of these basses, which seems to be of a lower grade - not a real problem where playability is concerned, but it appears that in their efforts to make this cheaper grade of ebony take on the deeper black appearance that a higher grade of ebony will generally show, the designers seem to have chosen to coat the fingerboards with some sort of black paint that tends to come off on your hands as you play the instrument. Not great "fit and finish". But again, this is mainly a cosmetic issue and not one involving playability. All this being true, the pros I've listed above are indeed still noteworthy.
