I've been playing Paiste for the over 3 decades, and the Twenty Crash is not considered "made for jazz" per se. They're 'medium weight' as Paiste crashes go, but are darker than the Signature or 2002 alloys for their weight, because of Twenty's B20 alloy. For jazz, the Twenty Thin Crash or Traditionals Thin Crash would be a better choice, or some of the thinner Signatures, Dark Energies, etc. The Twenty Crash works well in a lot of genres except perhaps metal. These have a nice slight trashiness underneath, with a gorgeous silvery brightness on top as well. Overall a complex, lower pitch for the same size than most Sigs and 2002s, but with a gorgeous sizzly "air" floating on top. They "want" to be played with a medium to heavier stroke, as I've found them not at their best potential with lighter playing. They cover a wide middle range of styles, not uber loud but not low volume either. No surprise there, since they're about medium-heavy weight and have a longish sustain. Don't let the price on Twenties fool you. They are every bit a professional-level cymbal as any on the market, and many top-level pros play them. It's because B20 alloy is the most common Turkish cymbal alloy, and thus less expensive, that Paiste can put these out at such a great price point.
This crash is a brilliant, long sustain crash that has a lot of personality. Very dark tone with a warm washout. Durable and a great buy for heavy hitters. Most people say that this cymbal is made for jazz but is very versitile and flows nicely with other genres of music such as metal and rock. Don't turn away since the price cause this cymbal is worth every penny. I recommend this cymbal for any intermediate or up and coming pro.
I bought these to replace my 16" and 18" Meinl Byzance Dark crashes ... I shouldn't have. I wanted a brighter more full sound, which these cymbals provided, but these have an extremely long decay that, to me, is not appealing. I was playing the Meinl crashes with my Paiste Twenty Hats and Ride and decided to match the whole series. But, they're too bright and meaty for my taste. The Twenty Series ride and hi-hats are amazing but the whole series doesn't match, tonally, the way I expected. The 16" and 18" Crash are too full and have too long a decay to compliment the Ride and Hats. The Hats and Ride, even the bell, get lost in the over-tones of either crash.
