This guitar is all about versatility. Replacing the traditional hum-single-hum configuration with three Narrowfield„¢ pickups paired with a 5-way blade switch, the Swamp Ash Special offers a multitude of switching possibilities. The Narrowfield„¢ pickups focus the string attack much like a single-coil but are hum canceling. The result is a new sounding pickup system, which blends features of single-coil, soap bar, and humbucking pickups.
The Swamp Ash Special has also been updated with a Pattern Regular neck shape and V12 finish.
Finish should enhance the look, sound, and feel of a guitar by accentuating the wood's inherent beauty and feel without hindering its natural resonance. And PRS Guitars' new "V12" finish does just that. Introduced at Experience PRS 2010, "V12" is a very thin, hard, and clear finish that will not crack or react with thinners. After roughly 12 years in development, it is halfway between acrylic and nitro but with a classic feel all its own. "PRS models with this new finish feel like old instruments," said Paul Reed Smith.
Pattern Regular Shape
Neck shapes have always been a high priority for PRS and a hallmark of PRS quality. A guitar should feel comfortable, like "home," as soon as you pick it up, and the neck is paramount to that connection. The new "Pattern Regular" neck shape is similar to the traditional PRS regular neck found on guitars made in the late 80's at PRS's former Virginia Avenue location.
This new neck shape reflects modern tooling and programming that allows PRS to even more precisely shape and consistently reproduce their necks.

Finally the one has arrived. I own seven other guitars, all of superb quality and reputation, but this one takes the cake. Thanks PRS .
This is my first PRS, and now I see what all the fuss is about. It is the most playable guitar I've ever owned. I've been playing guitar for 30 years, and this guitar inspires me to play, to practice, like none other. I was lucky enough to get the vintage natural with the maple neck. Can't say enough about the maple neck, and the guitar itself is a work of art...a thing of beauty. The guitar exceeds my skill level, but it beckons me to join it...hopefully some day I will.
Just received this guitar today and I didn't have long to play it but my first impressions were all extremely positive. The craftsmanship and finishing detail was perfect. Even the setup and action was perfect as far as I'm concerned. The pickups really impressed me in that they were clear and articulate no matter where you put the volume knob. Full on 10 it has a humbucker quality tone but still very clear and as I backed down on the volume knob they cleaned up to a definite single coil tone but didn't lose any punch and stayed full sounding. Volume backed off it sounds very much to my ears just like a perfect stratocaster. If I close my eyes while playing I don't think I could tell the sound apart from my American Deluxe Stratocaster but when the volume is rolled up to 10 it takes on a little different character that I can't quite get with my strat. Fantastic tones! I really don't think I could be more pleased at all. I'm so very thankful I picked up one of these while it was still available. I kind of think that I might have found THE ONE!
If you are looking for the versatility of a Strat and the bite of a Tele with a bit more gain, this is the ticket. Fantastic PRS craftsmanship, light and balanced, great intonation with whammy bar and locking tuners. The narrowfield pickups are perfect IMO - Touch sensitve and sound like noiseless P-90s. Get this one while they last.
I have been playing for 50 sum years and this guitar will be at my side at the end. The weight is very tolerable, the pick up are great and the neck is great. I would recommend this guitar to all that play a lot, I really like it.
Pictures "even good ones" don't due this guitar justice. I would definitely suggest one of the finish colors that show off the wood grain. Quality and part fit are excellent, inlays are super, they show off very nicely on the maple neck. Plugged the guitar into my Mesa Express 5-50, very nice tones "quite a bit different than my other guitars" tones are clean but full, the tone between switch positions span a much wider range than when listening to a internet demo. Nice light weight "greatly appreciated when using a guitar strap", little different neck shape, feels good, but will take a little getting use to. Excellent finish, the neck is very lightly coated giving it a very smooth satin like feel. I would recommend this guitar if your really looking for a quality instrument.
