Overview

The PRS SE Mikael Åkerfeldt is a guitar with features designed by the player and developed with PRS. Here's what Mikael says about his signature guitar:

"It will be single cutaway mahogany body with a flamed maple top. The neck will be of the wide-fat type and made of 3-piece maple that also goes around to the front of the headstock. Sweet! Ebony fretboard and 24 jumbo frets with extra large side dots for the 5th and 12th fret (I have fluorescent tape on my other guitars so I can sing and still see where I'm at while playing, this will look better!)."

"There will be the old-style PRS bird inlays on the fretboard. One HFS and one Vintage bass pickup thrown in with a 3-way toggle switch. PRS-style tremolo and all the hardware all will be gold (Bling! Well... It's fool's gold or something, but whatever...). The main finish is called 'tortoise shell'. The whole guitar will be high-glossed up apart from the back of the neck which I've requested to be satin matt, which is so much better for me at least."

"There will be a nice little Opeth "O" logo under the bridge as well. Comes with a gig bag. I think I might spend the LA nights with it... yes.. kinky! I think it looks stunning, oh yes I do!"

Lars Mikael Åkerfeldt is a Swedish musician who served as the lead vocalist, guitarist, and songwriter for progressive death-metal band Opeth. He has also been serving as the lead vocalist of death-metal band Bloodbath. Includes gig bag.

nice looking

By rex

from phoenix az.

I just bought this guitar on sale, no not because it was on sale, or I like the artist, actually I may have not even played it if looked up his music before hand. yet I played 5 others before trying this one. bottom line is it just played good, sounded better, and was in my $$ range. I was pleased with the action set up. yet may tweak it a bit to see if I can get faster action up the neck. I had a 1950 gretsch in years past and had never found a good replacement. words of wisdom from a old guy, never sell a guitar you love. bills will come and go good guitars may not. PS the sales person let me take my time and try as many guitars as I wished before making my decision, very helpful showing me a good assorted group in high and low price range.

Mike Ackerfeld

This is. Very good looking guitar ,it has decent pickups .i bought mine for $580 During a sale.the wide Ebony board with Abalone inlays is something you never find Usually unless you spend $3k. Everything works fine a best buy for sure under $1,000. I opened up the back and I am picky.i had the tech remove he Alpha pots and put some USA made ones. The input jack is a must spend the $10 And replace, also if you want the best tone there is a 180 pico fared capacitor for The volume, and a .022 for the tone control. Buy a Silver mica, And the best capacitor bar none for tone is the Jupiter HT bees wax cap For $28 you will believe the resolution you get it is like magnifying everything .also if you plan on using the Tremelo a lot then buy The best - Shaller locking tuners They are a direct drop in replacement. I personally changed the pickups because i like classic Rock and jazz.i bought Seymour Duncan Sh-1 for the neck ,and Sh-4 for thebridge They are very clear they are 4 conductor so I added pushpull switches for $20 Which give you another 6 different tones out if phase, withexcellent rich tones.and if i want heavy metal ,i turn my fender Frontman on reverb, and it rocks even without the pedals kicked in. I would also Recommend this to any guitarist. Graphtech saddles , and TusQ nut these lube the strings And prevent breakage I added $450 in parts and it now plays as good as any $3,000 guitar.

Fantastic

By Francis Norton

from wilmington MA

Truly a beautiful instrument at a very reasonable price. One of THE most versatile guitars I have had the pleasure to play and now own! I play a multitude of genres, from jazz to blues to classic rock and metal. This guitar sings with distortion, it is a true lead guitar, for those who listen to Opeth, they will recognize the tone with the right settings. My jazz teacher is in love with my guitar, I play many david brubeck covers and it sings. The neck is fast and the satin back part of the neck makes it easy to fly up and down, the pickups give you great trebles and good bassy notes with no muddiness. the tremolo gives for sick divebombs as well, such a beautiful guitar. Must have

Same old story AMAZING GUITAR

By BRB

from San Jose, CA

PRS's answer to the Les Paul. I have been wanting a Les Paul but can't afford a true Gibson which is far superior to the epiphone junk. I really tend more towards classic rock tones (Floyd, Led Zep, Santana, Green Day, U2 so on....). This guitar with the classic PRS humbucker setup can do almost everything, it almost gets the $2000 Les Paul tone and it rings so much clearer than gibsons when you back off slightly on the overdrive, Gibsons can get muddy. Amazing flexibility to get so many tones, fully capable of metal, clearly designed by Akerfeldt a death metal player. The most amazing thing for me was to stumble on the fact that my large fingers absolutely require the jumbo frets. I have struggled with bending and releasing and certain chords, it turns out that my fleshy finger makes contact with the fret board as the string settles into my flesh, increasing friction with the board, and stops the pressure on the string and the fret. Now my fingers apply force directly on the string and fret, so bending notes is a dream. The string slides like greased butter. Anyone with large or fleshy fingers willl benefit from these jumbo frets. It has instantly improved my rhythm playing and note bending. Someone soley into speed playing may prefer a lower action The beauty and craftsmenship is pure PRS the quality blows me away. The bird inlays, the chocolate texture of the body, the gold tremelo hardware. Truly amazing I just stare at for hours, when I am not playing it. Great job by Mike Akerfeldt and Paul Reed Smith.

Best Guitar Ever for a affordable price!!

By Eric DiBella

from mesa, AZ

I just got my guitar today and let me tell you i had to fix the bow in the neck but that was no problem. This guitar is the best prs se that i have ever played on. The bird inlays make you think that its an actual an expensive guitar when its not. The pickups are hot and this is what i like about. The bass pickup is very jazz like but very smooth and clean. The treble pickup is very hot and screams. I have fallen in love with the sound that comes out of my amp when i strum a chord and i sometimes just gaze and listen to it.

Awesome!

By ferma

from Los Angeles, CA

This model is head and shoulders above the rest of the SE line due to it's components and materials matching a lot of the American made PRS guitars. Mahogany body? Check. Abalony bird inlays? Check. Real PRS HFS and Vintage Bass pickups? Check. PRS tremolo? Check. 24 frets (the only SE model with 24 frets)? Check. Bonus features: satin backed neck; ebony fret board; flamed maple finish. All of these features add up to an amazing guitar for the price. I've played the SE models and all of them were garbage compared to this one. As for those concerned about the "O" logo, it's not massive and blends really well with the guitar. Akerfeld actually plays this guitar live, flawless switching from clean to massive crunch tones with ease. If it's good enough for profession live use, it should be good enough for most players, hobbyists and club/stage performers alike. You will not be disappointed.

Amazing Guitar!!!

By Frank

from Milwaukee, WI

Ijust got this guitar today and I must say it is awesome. right out of the box the thing was set up perfect and ready to play. the action was low with no buzzing of frets, and the ebony finger board is fast! the guitar has great sustain and tone. The one problem I did have is that the stock pickups though hot and good for rock, were a little thin for my taste, but not bad sounding. Fit and finish is amazing, it is an absolute beauty with the flamed maple top, and the clasic bird inlays. I have played many guitars that are alot more expensive than this guitar, but they don't compare. I would recomend it to anyone.
