Overview

The PRS SE Custom 22 Semi-Hollow Electric is a versatile guitar for those who desire the sustain and vibe of a chambered body. It features a carved top with a quilted maple veneer over mahogany back and sides. A single f-hole adds style and some acoustic resonance when playing unplugged. The mahogany neck sports PRS' popular wide fat neck profile and 22 frets medium jumbo. Original SE treble and bass pickups offer no-nonsense performance, wired to a 3-way switch and a single set of volume and tone controls. The PRS stoptail bridge is perfectly intonated and makes adjusting your action a breeze. Gig bag included.

The Wide Fat neck has the same nut width as the Wide Thin neck, but it has a deeper profile. Because of its strength and longer "heel", the Wide Fat neck produces warm tones with lots of sustain.

Comments about PRS SE Custom 22 Semi- Hollow Electric Guitar:

I bought this guitar with every intention of replacing the pick ups and doing some other tinkering (splitting humbuckers, add toggle switches, etc, etc). Now I'm debating if I should bother...which is remarkable because I tinker and constantly try to improve to almost a fault.
I was buying this guitar as my "jamband" guitar. I wanted to get Phish, Dead, Jimmy Herring type tones and I figured that this would be a great, low cost, starting point for tinkering and testing until I found what sounds right.
The craftsmanship and appearance is remarkable. When I opened the case, I smiled and blurted out loud "whoa"...and I am a snob when it comes to guitars...so there's that.
When I plugged in, I confirmed that I was going to rip out the electronics, however, after I took off the 9s and put on 10s my attitude started to change. Now I'm really debating what I will do. It takes to pedals well and sounds great through a Fender amp. I'm super surprised at how much I am liking the tone after 2 weeks of playing. I play a ton of slide (which I didn't anticipate doing on this guitar) but it even takes well to Derek Trucks Band riffs (not Allman stuff...it is semi hollow and won't "cut through" like a Les Paul). There is remarkable headroom on the tone control so it isn't just "clean to muddy"...it fades off well.
I'm not saying I will never change a thing on this guitar BUT it was worth every penny paid. I recommend it to anyone debating a semi-hollow guitar for jazzy, jammy, rock and some light chicken pickin'...but it is not a universal guitar. It won't handle a lot of the shredding and it won't cut through a mix/louder band situation as well as other guitars on the planet.
Here's the upshot: if you are seriously, remotely debating; buy it. After all, GC gives you 30 days. I will warn, you may be a little disappointed at first plug-in but replace the strings and let the tone marinade for a week...

Comments about PRS SE Custom 22 Semi- Hollow Electric Guitar:

I have many guitars including Gibson Fender Ibanez Peavey washburn and PRS. I have been playing music for 45 years, Including Guitar, Drums, Bass, and Keys, and singing. I have played in front of thousands and in front of a couple of people, This guitar is well built even though it is built in Korea, the tone is perfect my sound man said it cut through the mix well. But I bought it because of the Neck, it is JUST right,And This Guitar is also Very BEAUTIFUL, I will install a TonePros Wraparound PRS Santana Bridge with Locking Studs, It does not have to have one but I installed one on my other PRS and it worked very well, I have played this PRS twice and it stayed in tune very well even with new strings, I do like this guitar very well

I don't think paying more money is necessary to find a better quality instrument. I have a belief that applies to everything in life. The name doesn't equal quality, the product does.

Comments about PRS SE Custom 22 Semi- Hollow Electric Guitar:

The tone on this beautiful guitar is amazing, especially when played clean or with minimal distortion. Deep and rich, just beautiful. Not the optimal guitar for heavily distorted tones, but I have another guitar for that. Frets are good height, ~0.044 inches, not too high, not too low. I like the shorter 25" scale.

There are some drawbacks. This is a "SE" or "Student Edition" guitar, so it lacks some features that higher end guitars offer. As sold, this guitar comes with 9-42 strings, which intonate nicely with the barely adjustable (for intonation) bridge. I put on 10-46, these intonate too. The manufacturer indicates that intonation may not be possible with heavier strings, or a wound G. If you want to use heavy strings, you have to buy the $239 adjustable bridge to replace the stock unit.

My guitar had one very high fret (#10), but I have the tools to fix this and did so in just a few minutes. The rest of the frets are very co-planar. The tuners work well, but the tuning stability does not match my maple neck/ash body Peavey T-60 guitar--likely due to the more flexible neck. I wanted a guitar with separate controls for each pickup, with a split coil function, this guitar has neither. But that tone is just so nice and the guitar is so playable that I bought it anyway.

Very nice hollow body tone, pretty good construction

Comments about PRS SE Custom 22 Semi- Hollow Electric Guitar:

I started learning guitar 6 months ago and decided it was time to add a second guitar to my house (first is a '79 Peavey T-60). At first I just wanted a second electric guitar that I could keep in alternate tunings (e.g. open G, Eflat drop D, etc). My first run through Guitar Center netted a Gibson SG, which I hated after 1 hour at home.

I wanted something with a wider neck (43 mm nut) and shorter scale (24.75-25") than the Peavey. Gibson strings are TOO far apart. I had a long list of other criteria, such as jumbo frets about 0.045" tall, mahogany body and split coil humbuckers. The "real expert" was consulted by my salesman and he recommended PRS guitars.

I looked at 3 Korean PRS SE guitars. The guitars immediately felt really good but I did not like the tone of the solid body guitars at all, even on the tube amp--coarse, unpleasant. I then tried the semi-hollowbody SE Custom 22, and was stunned by the tone--so pure and deep when played clean! Really something MORE than the Peavy could give. Another 10 minutes of playing and then I took the guitar home. I did try one cheap Gretch hollow body, it did not compare.

I love the tone of the guitar, especially now that I have replaced the two high strings (9-series) with 10 size strings (leaving the lighter strings on for the E, A,D and G strings). The G may go too, I am not yet sure. It is important to understand that this guitar comes with a nearly non-adjustable bridge, and while it does intonate fine with the 9's it came with, and with the slightly heaver gauge strings I put on, it will not intonate or work properly with much heavier strings. You need to spend another $240 for a real intonable PRS bridge.

Downsides--tuning stability is not equal to the ash body, maple neck Peavey. Neither have locking tuners, but the Peavey is more stable. I understand this is to be expected with maple vs. mahogany necks. OK. No split coils, or even separate tone controls, too bad. Crummy jack. But I do love the way it sounds!
