Overview

The S2 Custom 24 takes the original PRS guitar, the Custom 24, and reimagines it with stripped-down features and a new aesthetic. Retaining the classic maple top/mahogany back combination, with the classic body shape & a new asymmetrical beveled top, this guitar is resonant with a funky familiarity. Its versatility comes from its custom-wound pickups and 3-way blade switch. Familiar for PRS players of old, and a fresh take for players of all types.

The S2 Story
The PRS S2 Series offers the fit, finish, feel, and attention to detail of PRS craftsmanship in a straightforward design. Standing for "Stevensville 2," S2 Series instruments are made at the Maryland shop blending new design elements and manufacturing techniques with practiced quality control and workmanship to create reimagined, fresh guitars that reach a more affordable price for players.

The S2 Series is comprised of three models: the S2 Mira, S2 Starla, and S2 Custom 24. These models share several key features, including PRS S2 locking tuners, custom-wound pickups, PRS neck shapes, PRS S2 bridges as well as PRS fretwire, nuts, and double-action truss rods. The new asymmetrical, beveled body shape offers a vintage vibe, and the flatness of the top gives these guitars a big, resonant voice.

Whether the S2 Series means your first PRS or an addition to your arsenal, one thing is certain: each model in the PRS S2 Series is a solid American-made guitar that makes no sacrifice in playability or tone.

Features
The Woods
Wood is the foundation of a guitar's tone. If you sacrifice the foundation, there is little hope of achieving an exceptional instrument. Believing this, PRS have chosen the same traditional tonewoods that are used on PRS Core guitars, such as maple tops, mahogany backs and bodies, mahogany necks, and rosewood fretboards. While some of the design and construction methods used in the S2 Series (the neck blank's starting dimension across the Series and the S2 Custom's wood grade, for example) allowed PRS to use less expensive and more readily available woods, no compromise has been made to the tone or integrity of S2 instruments.

Necks
A guitar should be comfortable and feel familiar from the moment you pick it up, and the neck is paramount to that connection. PRS S2 instruments feature a 25" neck with scarf-joint construction and the Pattern Regular neck shape, which stems back to the PRS "Regular" neck shape found on guitars made in the late 1980s in the Virginia Avenue Annapolis shop.

On the PRS S2 series, the neck begins with a quartersawn mahogany neck blank. That blank is cut, the headstock is scarfed, and the heel is built up using a plain splice. (A scarf joint is made up of two pieces of wood that are cut at complementary angles and glued together. A plain splice is a joining of two pieces of wood in the same line). These construction methods allow us to start with a smaller amount of raw materials, and the increased glue surface area results in a very strong joint. This technique combined with a pre-radiused, pre-fretted fretboard result in a very efficient, cohesive manufacturing process that creates a durable, comfortable, playable neck.

Width of the fretboard at the nut: 1 21/32"
Width at the body: 2 1/4"
Neck depth at the nut: 27/32"

Finish
Finish should do three things: most importantly, it should enhance the tone of a guitar. It should also feel good to the player's touch, and it should look good. The finish used on the PRS S2 Series accomplishes these goals by featuring a polyester basecoat and an acrylic topcoat (reminiscent of the finish system used on PRS Core guitars for twenty years (before the introduction of V12)). PRS have updated the process of this finish system to allow S2 guitars to move through the finish hall smoothly and quickly while also requiring a thinner topcoat for optimal tone. This old-but-new finish maintains a hi-gloss, attractive aesthetic, and the translucent and opaque color options offer vintage and modern flavors that allow players to choose the look that fits them best.

Pickups & Electronics
PRS S2 Series proprietary pickups are built to exact specifications, including wire and coating materials, winds, and resistance. Whether harkening back to the original HFS and Vintage Bass pickups or designed to work with the unique tones of a Bigsby tailpiece, S2 pickups were designed to capture the distinct tonal character intended for each instrument in the series.

All of the models in the S2 Series feature a 3-way blade pickup switch with a master volume and a push/pull tone control. Coil-tap functionality adds versatility by allowing players to split the humbucking pickups into singlecoils, providing a vast array of tones. The jack assembly used on the S2 Series is the same jack as the Core line, providing a clean connection point to amplify your sound.

Tuners, Nuts & Bridges
The tone of a guitar is influenced by several factors: wood choice, body style, pickups, scale length, metals and other materials used, etc. Some of the most impactful components are those that directly affect the vibration of the strings: the tuners, the nut, and the bridge. This is because it is the strings' vibration that the pickups sense and that creates the sound wave the ear will ultimately hear.

The bridge is the anchor of the guitar. It is here that the vibration of the string is transferred into the body of the guitar, bringing out the inherent tone of the woods chosen. Each S2 instrument features a different bridge style. The S2 Mira features the same stoptail that is used on Core PRS instruments. PRS use an unplated bridge with brass studs. The S2 Starla features a time-tested Tune-o-matic bridge with a Bigsby B50 tailpiece. The S2 Custom features a PRS tremolo (the same bridge found on the SE line of guitars).

The nut also plays a critical part in the transfer of tone. The nut on S2 instruments is the same nut PRS use on the Core guitars. The nut is strong and long-lasting without "grabbing" the strings, and it is imbued with brass, a highly musical metal.

PRS S2 locking tuners are used across the S2 Series. These proprietary tuners are reminiscent of the "Phase II" tuners and follow many of Paul Smith's "tweaks," including a brass shaft and specially-configured internal construction. The locking mechanism itself is identical to the one used on the Core guitars, which helps the guitar stay in tune.

Whether using parts shared by the Core manufacturing line or newly-sourced proprietary parts, PRS always chose to use musical materials (such as brass) and avoid materials that deaden tone (like nylon washers), maximizing the guitars' overall resonance, musicality, and tone.

Other Appointments
The nut, jack assembly, fret wire, electronics knobs, and strings are all shared between Core and S2 instruments. It is long-lasting and is comfortable to play. The electronics' knobs are made in PRS' own proprietary mold, which results in a handsome and ergonomic design. As with all of solidbody guitars, PRS use 10-46 strings. S2 Series guitars come in a nylon gig bag to make heading out for your next show that much easier.

Just bought me one of these. I was waiting to get an SE due to its great quality for such an affordable price. However, I spotted this exact S2 Custom 24 in Whale Blue and immediately played it. It was a hefty price, but upon playing it, I had no doubts that I wanted to purchase this fine piece of musical art.
First Impressions: The guitar was absolutely beautiful to start off with, so its very visually pleasing with its zebra pick ups and nice blue finish. The second I was able to plug it into an Orange Amplifier (Don't remember exactly) and it just had the most amazing tone I've ever heard. I played for another half an hour none stop and the guitar has a overall great feel, no cons about how its sits on your body, or how it feels. Absolutely loved it.
Why I bought it?: PRS Guitars to me have always been not only the most beautiful guitars in the market but over all best playing and sound. It bridges between a Strat and a Gibson Les Paul. I own a Strat and love it as well, but I needed a beefier tone that comes from hum buckers. I looked at a bunch of Les Pauls and though loving its sound, I disliked the way it felt. So then I played the PRS and it has the best of both worlds. It combines great feel and tone. I was sold. I wish I could personally thank the Paul Reed Smith team for such an amazing instrument. If you have the money to get it, you won't regret it my friends.

I bought one of these a few weeks ago and was very pleased. I went to rehearsal and our lead guitar player liked it so much I said MERRY CHRISTMAS and gave it to him. I went back to the store and ordered another one just like it, however the finish is very poor; looks like it was masked off half way and has a straight line splitting the front of the guitar in half and it is a completely dark dark color. I would really like another guitar. I haven't taken it out of the gig bag or even played it. It looks like a SECOND or BLEM to me.

A Great Start

By Ryan

Comments about PRS S2 Custom 24 Electric Guitar:

Are the tuners on this guitar of the quality you would expect from a $1400 dollar guitar? Err, almost. Are the pickups what you would expect from a $1400 dollar guitar? Not if you are used to the top-tier offerings of Seymour Duncan, Dimarzio, Lace, etc. Are the bridge saddles ugly and out of place looking? For sure, if they were made of the same nickel the rest of the bridge is made of it would be a much cleaner and high-end look in my opinion. Is the factory setup acceptable at least? No, the action is set way too high. Do I regret buying it? No. This guitar is a meticulously crafted work of art that has the most beautiful organic sound I have heard from an electric guitar. And for those that think the only thing that matters on an electric is the pickups, well, I respect your opinion but this guitar has crushed that notion for me personally. The neck and fret board are perfect, the body is extremely comfortable to hold, there's no question it feels like a very expensive guitar in your hands. If you expect perfection from your $1400 dollars, you might not find it, at least not immediately, but if you've got the money and the patience to make it your own, it's definitely worth the entry fee.

First guitar

Comments about PRS S2 Custom 24 Electric Guitar:

So I may be crazy paying 1300+ for a guitar having never owned one before. However, after spending an entire day at Guitar Center, I kid you not open to close, it was clear to me that getting a guitar like this would not only be easier to learn on but also allow me to progress without having to purchase another guitar in the near future. I was very impressed with the overall quality of the instrument and the attention to even the smallest details. The neck is PERFECT! All of the frets are rounded and no sharp spots at all. I didn't find this quality even on the highest end Ibanez and ESP guitars that I looked at. I am very pleased with my purchase and know it will last me many years of learning and improving my playing.

Comments about PRS S2 Custom 24 Electric Guitar:

I am an intermediate player who has restarted playing after 40 years. My comments are probably not for the "super-pro shredders", but rather for regular hobbyist players. I have a Gibson Studio, Fender MIM Strat and now this PRS in whale blue.

The PRS is gorgeous and plainly of higher build quality than my Gibson or Fender. (Of course it costs twice as much so that is a factor.) The tone is generally better also and because it can play as single or with both coils it is versatile. It stays nicely in tune and if I could only have only one guitar, this would definitely be the one.

However, I also enjoy the Gibson because, while the tone quality appears to be slightly lesser, it seems to sound more "soulful" and "gravelly". It has "personality" and you want to pick it up. It feels small and "intimate".

Likewise, the Fender also seems to have "personality" and I am amazed at how great this Mexican Strat plays. It is an overachiever that never disappoints. For the money, you can't beat it. The Fender longer neck feels different but comfortable to me. While the sustain of the PRS is better, I prefer the Fender more as a single coil instrument.

In sum, the PRS is a beautiful looking and sounding, versatile guitar that could be my only guitar. But I enjoy all three and each in it's own way is a fantastic instrument.

Comments about PRS S2 Custom 24 Electric Guitar:

Seriously, this is an excellent quality and playing guitar. I went in to GC to buy/try a PRS SE and and American Strat. I walked out with this PRS S2. Compared to the SE, the SE looks better, hands down, as they are modeled after the Core models. However, after playing both side by side, the fit, finish, and feel of the S2 won me over. It plays easier, and feels higher quality than the SE. As for the American Strat, I found chording on the S2 to be much easier than the Strat. The Strats' 25.5' scale felt sooo long after playing the PRS 25" scale. It's the perfect blend between the Gibson and Fender scale lengths. My only gripe is because the finish on the S@ is so thin - for best sound according to PRS, it does show fine scratches and small bumps easily. But, that's also my excuse for not spending $3000 on a Core model - it will get scratched and bumped. With the S2, it only hurts half as much. You can get any sound out of this guitar due to the tonal options - HH and split coils. Excellent value.

Comments about PRS S2 Custom 24 Electric Guitar:

Incredible guitar, and with the great price point it's even better. I've been in love with the core line for years, but have never had the cash to put out on a Core CU24, but when I played this S2 I was absolutely blown away. Don't let the Korean pickups throw you for a loop, these things wail hard. The full core are just a smidge better (of course), but these are completely comparable and you won't be missing out. Do yourself a favor and jam one of these guitars out, they're incredible!

Comments about PRS S2 Custom 24 Electric Guitar:

I have been playing for 25 years and have owned at least 40 guitars, including multiple American-made Fenders and Gibsons. I keep trading instruments because I am extremely picky, and once I find something I don't like about a guitar, I can't stop thinking about it. I have owned my PRS S2 Custom 24 for about a year, now. Of the seven electrics that I currently have, it is the one I play the most. It is my second favorite among all of the instruments I've owned, and it is one of the three guitars that I am certain that I will never trade no matter how badly I get the G.A.S. It feels and sounds superb, and has the only tremolo I've ever used that I consider to be a positive addition to the instrument rather than an annoyance. Perhaps I was lucky enough to get a really good one, but PRS, or at least its reputation, is known for consistency. I can't think of a better guitar for this almost-affordable price. I took the plunge when it went on sale, paid it off far more quickly than I thought I would, and it's mine now, forever. I only wish I hadn't waited 25 years.

I use my Custom 24 mainly for Jamming recording and practicing. It is a phenomenal guitar! Super high quality and attention to detail! I ordinarily would not buy an instrument sight unseen but took a leap of faith on Paul Reed Smith as I was aware of their reputation for quality. It came in on a cold and rainy day. After unboxing and inspection, Temperature stabilization and string stretch out it was ready to go! Flat out perfectly setup and intonated. Holds it's tuning extremely well even with tremolo use. Best instrument out of the gate of any instrument I've ever played and I've played plenty in my 40+ years of playing Guitars!
