Overview

In the spirit of Private Stock’s ever forward-thinking designs, welcome May 2016’s Guitar of the Month: the 509. The 509 starts with a 5 single coil platform – with the outside two coils grouped as humbuckers. With its longer scale length (25.25”), middle single coil pickup, and two mini-toggle coil-tap switches, the 509 is perfect for single coil players who want the added tonal versatility of humbucking and humbucking + single coil sounds in one guitar.

Additional premium Private Stock specification include a Private Stock grade curly maple top with African ribbon mahogany back, curly maple neck with kingwood fingerboard, headstock veneer, and truss rod cover, mother of pearl purfling, side dots, and inlays, and the Private Stock Gen III Tremolo. The May 509 models will be finished in Imperial Purple Smoked Burst. Only ten of these instruments will be made for May 2016, commemorating Private Stock’s 20th Anniversary.

Guitar of the Month
The original Guitars of the Month were cased between December 1994 and March 1996. They provided the opportunity to experiment with new ideas and led directly to the Private Stock to the creation of the Private Stock program with the first “official” Private Stock instrument casing on April 19, 1996.

“At the time, the original Guitars of the Month program was a way for us to experiment with new designs and features. To this day, that innovation and specialization is still at the heart of the Private Stock program, and we are very excited to try out some new ideas for our 20th Anniversary year.” – Paul Reed Smith

Comments about PRS Private Stock 509 Curly Maple Top and Neck Electric Guitar:

I love this guitar for jamming along with the PussyCatDolls and the Dixie Chicks it truly nails the whiney cat tones. If jesus were a guitar he would be this one. If elvis was around he would play this one. If kurt Cobain would have had this guitar he would not be dead.

I would buy another, but my wife would kill me

Pros

  • Incredible craftsmanship and tone

Cons

  • Locking saddles are difficult to work with

Best Uses

  • Anything a Strat and Tele can do

Comments about PRS Private Stock 509 Curly Maple Top and Neck Electric Guitar:

While the 509 resembles a 513 in a lot of different ways, it is its own beast and should be considered to more of a hybrid between a 513 and a 408. The pick ups are quite a bit different from the 513 being more balanced, more rounded, more articulate, and voiced to have closer to tele sounds on the bridge and strat sounds on the neck. The characteristics of the 408 electronics are readily apparent in that there is little to no volume drop between the singlecoil and humbucker modes. Tonewise, it has both the tele growl and strat neck pick up coo; but like the 513 before it, the maple capped mahogany body makes it warmer than ash or alder bodied guitars. The big difference in tone is that the honking bump of the 513's at 2kHz is gone, so the brittleness that some of complained is gone as well. What's left is a really smooth and refined sounding instrument.

As far as the craftsmanship, the pictures don't do the guitar justice. You can't really see the tight figure of the Kingwood fret board although you can see a hint of the figuring on the headstock, the neck purfling, and the etched birds. It's truly a work of art to behold up close.
