Modeled after the guitar that helped Tim create 311’s signature sound.

311’s Tim Mahoney has been playing PRS guitars since the early '90s. The SE Tim Mahoney is modeled after the mahogany ‘Standard 24’ PRS that has helped Tim create 311’s signature sound for well over a decade. Updated for 2014, the SE Tim Mahoney now has an added top-carved bevel, making this guitar even more pleasing to the eye.

  • Versatile and easy playability

As reviewed by Justin on 8/2/2014

All around, the PRS SE Tim Mahoney is a great guitar. It's thin, rosewood fretboard makes for an easy play up and down the neck. I can't tell you how wonderful this guitar plays, especially for an amateur. It took a couple months to get the right strings (D' Addario XL Nickel Wound, 10/46 Regular Light Gauge), to bring out a real warm sound that can be bright when you trigger some heavy distortion and turn up that tone knob for a great lead. Even better, the clean watery sounds created when you want a simple bluesy riff is easy to achieve with flick of the 3-tone selector switch. I'm not talking a Gibson ES-335, but close to the mid-range Fender American Strat (~ $1200). If you want a PRS that is cheap (PRS cheap, that is), durable, easy playability, with a warm, bright sound, this Tim Mahoney SE is where it is at. The stop-tail bridge makes re-stringing simple and fast, as well as adjusting its height. Both Hum-buckers are easy to adjust as well and can really change your tone with either the bass or treble pickup. The frets are in great shape and there is no buzzing from the sound of the string hitting another higher fret. So, all in all, it's a great guitar to play, the baby blue color is easy on the eyes, and if you love the awesome riffs of 311, well, look no further. I've owned this guitar for a year and a half, and my experience with it only gets better. It makes solo's easier to play, with less strain on the hand. The guitar looks exactly the same as when I bought it, but I use carnauba wax for the paint, and lemon oil for the fretboard every time I change the strings, which is usually at least once a month. Obviously other players will change up to everyday. Take care of it, and it will take care of you, just like a Honda. The drawback I have found to this guitar is it seems to go out of tune after playing a few songs. I put Vaseline on the nut where the neck meets the head stock, and that has helped quite a bit. After some long sessions you may find when you are adjusting the volume or tone knobs, there can be some static although, it is an easy fix especially with the help of the guys at Guitar Center on I-45 S near FM 1960. Ask for Geronimo or his son Jake, they are the best. This guitar has exceeded my expectations, especially for an PRS SE, I haven't heard another SE sound as good, with the exception of the new SE Custom 24, which is what this guitar basically is. Again, the only drawback is the top nut, and static with the knobs when you adjust, but these can all be simply fixed for cheap. The PRS warranty should take care of it all for the first year, but it is always a good idea to get the protection coverage through Guitar Center, just in case. You never know what could happen.
