311's Tim Mahoney has been playing PRS guitars since the early '90s. The SE Tim Mahoney is modeled after the mahogany Standard 24 PRS that has helped Tim create 311's signature sound for well over a decade. Features include an all mahogany body, stoptail bridge, nickel hardware, SE HFS Treble and SE Vintage Bass pickups, a 24 fret Wide Thin maple neck with a 25" scale length, and a rosewood fretboard with bird inlays.

Finally saw this in my local Guitar Center today and was pretty impressed overall. Sure, it's not an American-made PRS with a carved top and side binding or Tim's Vessels Tiki head inlay, but it still looks the part. I love the color for starters, it's rare to see a guitar stand out like this one does. If you are sick of seeing the typical, black, candy apple, sunburst, white guitars, then this guitar is right up your alley. The playability is the first thing I noticed and the longer scale length with the 24 frets. Plays like a dream, just like the USA models. Nut is very well machined and the bridge is the PRS wrap-around which, combined with the set neck, creates LOADS of sustain. Pickups sounded typical PRS style, although the bridge was a hair brighter than I would have liked. Lots off bass, but also clear highs. I played it through a Line 6 with 311 artist patches and rolled through "Beautiful Disaster" "Prisoner" "Amber" and "Down" among others. The guitar responded perfectly and delivered the thick, melodic 311 sound. The guitar sounded amazing clean and thoroughly rocked when distorted. Leads sang out for days and it had decent harmonic response. Used the volume knob for swells and it was in a perfect place for my pinky and also delivered a nice volume taper. For $500 bucks, with a nice set neck and pair of pickups, custom blue color, this guitar is a great deal. If you are a 311 fan, this is pretty much a must. However, this guitar is incredibly versatile and can be used in many rock/reggae applications.
This will be a good review BUT: I got a defective guitar, possible with any manufacturer. Blemishes on finish: slight bulge on neck made G string sound off constantly. Would not stay tuned. I had previously purchased the PRS SE Custom 24 first. It was perfect: so pretty with flame maple top I didn't want to play it. I got the Tim Mahoney model because I wanted a working man's guitar, ok to use and scratch. Returned that and got the SE Dave Navarro model. Perfect. I was concerned about tremolo (had a strat once that went out of tune every song) but amazingly the PRS stays in tune. EVEN the G string after bending thru several songs. The wide/thin necks on these models play like none other. First guitar I've liked the sound of the pickups with no effects. PRS guitars are awesome I recommend highly.
