Comments about PROMARK Select Balance Rebound Balance Wood Tip Drum Sticks:
Before I scare you way, I just want to say that I've refrained from a 5 star rating not because of quality, but because I see a lot more potential in this series, and being that the series is literally in its first weeks of life, I'm sure that potential will be revealed. Let me tell you some about these sticks, in case you haven't otherwise been able to get this information. The concept is to have varying tapers on the same stick model, so as to allow the player to transition between pairs of sticks with different feels without changing the way the sticks feel in the hands. It's a brilliant idea that was inevitable. There exists a forward taper, and a rebound taper. The forward taper is shorter, and thus shifts the weight of the stick more towards the front. This allows the player to do more of the work, and also allows for more power. The rebound taper is longer, and thus shifts the weight of the stick more towards the back. This allows the stick to do a lot of the work, and permits ease of playing at lower dynamic levels. The great part about these sticks for me is that they aren't frivolous. Switching between different sticks for different feels and adjusting is a legitimate problem I face all the time. I like to use the Regal Tip Alex Van Halen sigs, the Vic Firth Dave Weckl sigs, and most of Sound Percussion's models. If you are familiar with these models, you'll know how different they are in build, and thus in playability. It's not a comfortable conversion at all. With these new Select Balance sticks, I can get the same tip, diameter, and length with adjustments made for finesse and power, as opposed to using extraneously small sticks and extraneously large sticks. Currently, Select Balance sticks are only being sold in 16" lengths with acorn wood tips. This is a good place to start, as it's indubitably the most versatile outfit for a stick, but it's not my preference. Luckily, four different diameters are being offered, so there's no problem finding a comfortable fit in that category, but I like longer sticks with barrel tips, so the Select Balance models I have will take some getting used to, but they fit the job they aim to serve wonderfully. If you're a fan of the current stock outfit on these sticks, go and grab yourself a pair of rebound tapers and forward tapers in your favorite diameter, and see for yourself how such a simple modification can create such a difference.
