I purchased this kit in October 2013 in Pearlescent White. Aesthetically, this kit is gorgeous. STM Suspension mounting system is legit. It gives ANY drummer almost countless ways to set up their tom arrangements. The white lacquer finish is very nice. It has a sparkle blended in that exactly matches my DW Performance snare. That goes to show how well attention to detail is with this kit. Upon opening, I inspected the shells for hours, and there were only a couple minor blemishes-and honestly, I expected more. The wood is a Chinese maple. I inspected the laminates, and found very few black/brown dead rings. The quality of the wood was in the 'acceptable' range for even a professional drummer. The 10'' and kick were flawless. The 12'' had a few putty fills on the bearing edges which I sanded. And the 16'' bearing edge had to be fine sanded as there was a belly on the edge on one spot. The snare was well-made, but it was the only item I didn't care for. I found it to be very ringy, regardless of the heads I used. As aforementioned, I switched it out for a DW Performance snare (which is God-like!). The dual turret lugs are cool, but the chrome scratches easily. Gotta be careful when transporting these drums. Another really cool quality about these drums is that they can be customized cost-efficiently. At gigs, I play my 10'' and 16'', and at home, I add on the 12''. Even better, you can buy add on toms from 8''-18'', and they are very affordable.

As for the sound, the toms are great. At home I use muffling rings or moongel to dampen overtones. Yes, there are overtones, but all drums have them, and that's the beauty of drums. People can complain, but when you're playing a gig, those overtones can't even be heard. At home, they are, and that's what moongel is for. I've played Mapex, Pearl, Yamaha and DW, and these are relatively close in sound. All I can say is, I'm happy with them!

Drumming can be a VERY expensive hobby. To save money without sacrificing quality makes it all the more better.

Bear in mind that I purchased This kit to replace drums in a 12 piece kit, To make it all maple and of a similar color. This is a lacquered finish, and not a wrap like the description said (thank God). However, they do not have much, if at all, a honey coloring. They start w/ black on the bottom and lighten to a gray in the middle and quite light on top. Much lighter than pictured. The Bass drum has good quality round hoops. unlike the last Pearl kit, and others, I have bought that wont hold a drum head. It did come with a big glob of glue on top that I am have trouble getting off. I have found the omni-ball type holders difficult to position into the larger set (6 mounted toms, 4 wide.) A big + is the built in clamp in the back of the tom mount, where I am mounting a double row chime bar and a 12" splash cymbal. Tuning became an issue as the 10" affected the snare drum. fix that and then you have the same problem with the 12" or the 8" . I have been tuning and playing drums since I was 8 (that makes 50 years), and though it is common problem this was the most difficult to cure (I had to lose the lower head and re-tune the hole Kit). But it beats shelling out 6 grand on a kit that does not sound as good. So far It is a well built kit, to good for a novice. Very musical sound.

Comments about PDP Concept Maple by DW 5-Piece Shell Pack:

There are a lot of great drums out there, but you would need to spend twice as much to get the professional DW features and sound quality found in the budget-priced PDP Concept series; An amazing value with DW written all over it.

The drums feature 7-ply maple shells (10-ply snare). The bass drum is what you would expect from a 22x18 drum - a warm, thunder-like thump. The sturdy spurs and rubber-lined lug claws are part of the quality borrowed from DW.

The 10-ply 14x5.5 snare included in the kit is a great drum for the price; crisp and full bodied. In isolation, you get a hint of woody warmth behind its undeniable crack. Rim shots come through with stinging authority. The DW signature throw-off is a plus.

The FAST-sized toms are not drilled and fitted with the DW suspension system. They are bright, warm and evenly spaced. Tuned up for jazz or fusion they produce a clean round and responsive sound. Bringing the pitch down a bit delivered a deep, rock sound. The stock Remo heads are better than what you would expect from a kit this affordable. Fitting your favorite heads will help you achieve any sound you want. Overall, these drums are a bargain and worth looking into even if you are a seasoned player.

Comments about PDP Concept Maple by DW 5-Piece Shell Pack:

I had bought a Yamaha Stage Custom Birch set first. The construction was immaculate. The bass drum claws even had a rubber piece in the claw where it gripped the wood hoop but I couldn't get the sound I wanted. The rack toms seemed too small in relation to the floor tom. The kick was thunderous! I had trouble getting the 10" tom to right out the next day so I took them back and got these. Could immediately see the lower quality. Some hoops are too big and looked different. Not all the same shinyness. No rubber in the bass drum claws. The rubber piece that protects the bass drum hoop where the pedal goes on was crooked. However, I love the way they sound. They're beautiful too. I had to get a Remo Powerstroke 3 head for the kick. A similar head was on the Yamaha kit. Now it's thunderous too, keeping the reso and batter head loose. The toms are about one inch deeper than the Yamaha kit so to me they have the same depth of sound. I think I'll keep them.

Been playing for 35 years and this is my first Maple kit since the used 1969 Ludwig kit I started with....PDP Maple has a great sound once modified a bit!!.....my recommendations: SNARE = Puresound Blaster wires, REMO reverse dot Controlled Sound batter head, and moon gel; Bass = Evans EMAD2; Toms = REMO Pinstripes. Resonant heads on the kit are sufficient, so no need to spend extra $$ there. Aside from those mods, I also recommend getting a DRUM DIAL tuner. I always have tuned by ear, but the DRUM DIAL makes it real easy. I loved the feel of my old drums, so I wrote down all the tensions and matched them exactly on my new PDP drums........and voila, I got the same feel.....like hitting a sweet spot on a golf drive. These PDP drums are definitely worth the money....can't wait to play out with them!

These drums are a wonderful value. They look and sound amazing. The construction and hardware is solid. With the stock heads, they drums sound pretty good. I, however, replaced all of the heads. Superkick 1 for the bass and Emperor Ebony on the toms, and the kits sounds really big and full! I'm very satisfied with it.

This drum set is amazing for it's price. I'd recommend switching out the heads for something better. Though I had a few major problems with the drums. PDP apparently cut my bearing edges for all my drums unevenly causing all my hoops to warp and bend over time. This made it impossible to tune each drum. Instead of waiting a month for PDP to repair them, I sent them into a drum repair shop to get the bearing edges recut. Keep in mind that repairing your bearing edges isn't cheap. Despite these problems, I love this drum set. It looks fantastic in pearlescent black.

I have been a drummer for over 25 years and have played numerous kits - whether that be friends kits, own kits, back lined kits, etc... A venue I regularly play at has a PDP CX Maple and I was so blown away by it, that I went out and bought one myself. Granted, this is not the CX series, but it's a maple PDP. You can not find a kit in this price range that compares in my opinion. It's essentially a DW kit (same hardware almost) at 1/4 the cost, obviously not the same quality, but this set is definitely under-priced for what you get. I use mine full time for practice, gigging, etc. and I get positive feedback from every sound guy I have worked with. You get a great tone if you put on some quality heads and tune them well. Don't go out and spend your money on a Pearl Vision kit or some other garbage, buy this kit!

DW hit a home run with this kit. Exceptionally great hardware, beautiful finish, sound beyond great. I think DW had in mind drummers who cant afford actual DW line drums so this is just a taste of what the company has to offer. The factory heads are OK, but I quickly swapped them out for Evans G2 clear and Clear resonant heads. All I can say is wow, the sound is professional as it comes. You get a 5 piece maple drum kit for under a thousand dollars. These are some of the heaviest drums I held before, DW definitely built these to last. I will be playing these drums for many years to come. If you can't afford a DW kit, don't hesitate on this kit. Guitar Center is blowing this kits out always on sale, making it affordable for anyone.
