Overview

The drummer-friendly and stylish design of the Yamaha DD-65 drum machine marks a transition to a more professional and versatile digital-drumming instrument.

It features an aux in jack that lets you connect an MP3 player and play along with your favorite music, or load MIDI songs from the internet into the internal Flash ROM memory and play along. Stereo-sampled voices, a wide variety of percussion sounds from all over the world, a bass boost speaker system, and digital stereo processing give the Yamaha DD-65 an irresistible, thundering beat.

The drum machine's control panel includes intuitive features that are easy to operate. For example, select the Hand Percussion mode and the digital drum kit automatically switches to percussion voices like congas and bongos. With its powerful features, this drum machine is no toy.

Operates on six "C"-size batteries or Yamaha PA150 or PA5D power adapter. See survival kit C (#701588)

If you are looking for a unit to supplement drum tracks this is an outstanding unit. I use it with EzDrummer and it works great with the BFD2 Demo. The feel and sensitivity are great and the unit seems very well made. It does not have the bells and whistles of a full electronic kit, but if you are a non-drummer, you probably don't need all of this anyway. The kick pedal is not very good, and should probably be replaced if you want to record a kick track, but the unit is great overall.

What is advertised as "touch sensitive" would be better described as defective. I know it says in the manual that if you hit the bass drum pedal too softly then it might not make any sound, but this was just ridiculous. I really don't see the point in having such a feature if it requires you to hit the pedal hard and precise each and every time. The hi-hat pedal isn't like that at all. In fact, I assigned a bass drum voice to it and it felt just fine because it doesn't have the "touch sensitive" feature. So I figured maybe I'd just switch the inputs to control the bass drum with the hi-hat pedal and control the hi-hat with the bass pedal. Guess what, you can't. When you try that, they just don't work at all. You also can't turn off this "touch sensitive" feature, it is what it is. What kills me is that if not for this serious design flaw I would have absolutely kept it. There is an alternative, you can buy a regular kick tower like what you would have on a normal sized electronic drum set, but with the money you'd be spending all together, you might as well get a low-end full size set. It's a shame because this is an overall good product with one devastating flaw. Bottom line: I would only recommend this product if you intend to invest in a real kick tower to use with it instead of the bass pedal that comes with it.

Comments about Yamaha DD-65 Digital Drums:

I was hoping to use it as "upstairs" drum kit, quietly to not disturb the family. And demo type recording. But the snare pad is very intermittent about responding. Probably have to hit it in a very specific spot. Trying to hit it hard enough, wound up triggering other pads. Looks like you can only adjust the sensitivity for all pads the same, 0 to 2 level. That's probably not the problem anyway. If you have one bad pad, no good way to just replace the one. Back it goes.

My second one. Great unit for great price. Versatile, portable, programmable, typical Yamaha quality. With better kick pedals you could play live.

using this as a trigger for garage band - up top response is good - not a fan of the kick drum pedal- if you have the extra money invest in a kp 65 kick drum tower what a difference - i also trading in some gear for the dw 2000 double bass pedal - having lots of fun \,,/

Comments about Yamaha DD-65 Digital Drums:

My 14 yo daughter wanted a drum set for Christmas, we found her one that would fit in her small bedroom, with good reviews and a famous brand name. Nice item. I was not very happy that the drums did not come with a cord to plug into the wall, we had to use Yamaha keyboard cord for now, but we will have to order the cord just for the drums. Extra money we did not expect to spend. One pedal did not work properly, we contacted Yamaha Customer Care Center and they shipped us both pedals fairly quick. My girl enjoys playing drums so I am happy. We are new to this musical instrument, so I can't say too much about the sound or other professional features. Thanks.

Comments about Yamaha DD-65 Digital Drums:

The best thing about it is its fun to play and has good sounds. You can choose a set and adjust how sensitive you want each drum to be. I didn't like the drum button pedal. I bought a Yamaha electric drum tower and use a double kick pedal . It makes a huge difference if you play metal or punk. My band jams in my apartment at lower levels so this drumset does the trick if you cant find a practice space. You can play it just about anywhere.

Comments about Yamaha DD-65 Digital Drums:

I originally purchased a different brand from Musicians and had issues with it--the company was very helpful in resolving it for me--so a BIG shout out to the staff! I actually like the Yamaha better although the pedals still are cumbersome-nothing more than small round knobs- you have to be able to hit it spot on..for me I hit it better by using the heel of my foot which isn't good. I may see if I can get a foot trigger to add to it if it's possible. Neither pedal puts out much volume but I'm just learning so can't complain too much.
