The LA-610 by Universal Audio defined the affordable, ultimate vintage tone channel strip. So how can UA improve on tonal perfection on what was already a hit product? Enter the sequel...LA-610 Mk II, a second-generation revamp of the original 2005 LA-610 design. While the preamp and compressor are identical to the original LA-610 that professionals have come to know and love, additional features have been added such as true compressor bypass, larger metering, improved output signal, and an auto-sensing power supply. The LA-610 Mk II also features the highly popular black-on-black cosmetics of the LA-610 Signature Edition.

The original UA 610 tube mic pre and EQ have been used to record artists ranging from Frank Sinatra to Eddie Van Halen. It's a sound that never gets old - just better - thanks to the spirit of Bill Putnam and modern advances in electronics design.

Comments about Universal Audio LA-610 Mk II Classic Tube Recording Channel:

I just bought this for my studio and it is a great piece of gear! The tube pre is authentic sounding and when you drive it you can get a nice saturated tone. The LA2A opto compressor sounds really close to the actual LA2A comp. There are definitely sonic differences but at least it great the point across. Has done great on Kick, Bass, Vocals, Guitar cabs, and more.

    Beautiful!

    By Russell Reiter

    from Desert S.W.

Comments about Universal Audio LA-610 Mk II Classic Tube Recording Channel:

LIke the title of my review says: BEAUTIFUL! UA is a long-time class act. Getting a killer pre and compressor together (plus EQ) is perfect for tracking. Can bring out subtlties and clarity/color (depending on how set) that most mixers or lesser pre's could never muster even in their dreams.
HAs everything that you really need in a "channel strip" type unit.
Well, it's classic UA gear - built like a tank, feels and sounds wonderful.
The most expensive pre that I own (but also comes with a comp). Worth every penny. Quality sometimes costs more (but not always!). This unit is my go-to for important tracks, such as lead vocals.
Has many subtlties that can be had by changing gain stucture, drive, etc. If you can afford one, you won't be disappointed.

    Silky smooth

    By Chris Cortez

    from San Francisco, CA

Comments about Universal Audio LA-610 Mk II Classic Tube Recording Channel:

I own several boutique pre-amps to compare to and the LA-610mkII stands shoulder to shoulder with them. It possesses a tone unlike the others especially on male vocal...Silky highs with punchy low mids and just enough air. The preamp and compressor work very well together where you can hit 10db of compression and barely hear it working. Very smooth and musical for tracking vocals. Like an LA2a it is very easy to set up. Everything feels solid. Switches and knobs have a positive feel and seem high quality. For a vintage modeled piece it actually has a pleasing modern tone and not dark like some reviews have stated. It's definitely warm but possibly because of the smooth mid range. If anything it has a well-balanced tone that will work well on many lead sources. On the bad side, the preamp can be overdriven slightly if not careful. Watch your loud passages and set your gain for that. All in all, I'm loving this piece. It has a color unlike my neve style preamps and it fills that lush and opulent side of my tool kit. Smooth and punchy. Delicate and tough. UA has a winner here. I'm in.

    LA610MKII kicks big time

    By MHB

    from Chicago

Comments about Universal Audio LA-610 Mk II Classic Tube Recording Channel:

So after months of research on pre-amps/ channel strips and after watching UA's video on the original UA 610 console. Takes some getting used to for vocal/mic settings, but it has a TON of sounds from clean to colored. Built like a tank and will be in my studio set-up as a main piece for years, if not the rest of my life. Highly recommend it.

    Vocals final frontier!!

    By Daniel-ZERKE

    from Sacramento

Comments about Universal Audio LA-610 Mk II Classic Tube Recording Channel:

I bought this unit coupled with a Mojave 201-FET. Now, perhaps it was the combo of great mic and great mic pre, but the newest vocals I have recorded with this pair are night to day with what I was using before. I went from a Presonus Tube Pre and an AT 3035 to thyis combo and the sound difference was astonishing. However, it must be noted that I tried using the direct in for both guitar and bass and have to say that the sound was not better (if not worse) than going in through my more budget set up. Admittedly there is a possiblity I was "doing it wrong" but this unit didn't help my DI sound much.I still gave 4.5 rating b/c the dramatic increase in vocal recording quality alone makes this unit worth the $$!!

    Amazing. Completely changed my recordings.

    By NeonRainMusic

Comments about Universal Audio LA-610 Mk II Classic Tube Recording Channel:

I have owned this for about 3 months. It is now probably one of my favorite pieces of gear I own. I record a lot of acoustic guitar, vocals, and percussion (cajon, djembe, tabla, etc.) and I am always blown away by the sounds I get from this thing. With acoustic guitar I found that with some dead strings on my taylor and a Rode NTK tube mic, I get very Nick Drake -esque (pink moon) acoustic guitar sound. It is very warm and very full. There is little need for editing the sound once it's in the computer. I also love it on vocals. The compression works great for a lot of things and is pleasing to the ear as it is a very musical compression (not harsh or too drastic). Sometimes for percussion tracks (using an AKG c-414 xls) I will use the preamp with -10 gain in the preamp (the lowest tube saturation) but not the compressor which allows me to warm up the sound but still keep the clarity without too much tube saturation which is more suited for vocals and acoustic guitar IMO. If you are looking at channel strips and want something that will give you a bigger, warmer, more vintage sound...this is THE product for you. Seriously the LA-610 is awesome! The 6176 is now on my wishlist...once i can afford it.

    Probably the best out there....

    By Chris-E24PV

    from Paris, France

Comments about Universal Audio LA-610 Mk II Classic Tube Recording Channel:

I've owned this thing for very little time, but I've used its older brother ( the mkI ) quite often. It sounds great, that's for sure. The tube character is obvious but not overwhelming which means it can be transparent or coloring depending on your settings. It's very easy to dial by the way and that's one of the strengths of this machine. You can't sound bad through it unless you set it blindfolded, and if you do sound bad there's something seriously wrong with the rest of your signal chain. It's a mellow, somewhat vintage sounding device, but it sounds very full and accurate. On acoustic instruments and vocals, it's amazing. It's also pretty good as a D.I box, but other channel strips can do just as good for cheaper in that regard. If you can afford it, and your recording environment is good enough ( please don't patch this into an M-box mini, it's not designed for this kind of usage and that would just be wasting money ), then it's the kind of gear that you'll keep for a lifetime.

    Quality UA

    By C.E.O

    from Mt.View,Hi.

Comments about Universal Audio LA-610 Mk II Classic Tube Recording Channel:

First off I have 2 of the original LA-610's there no longer making them. But the specs are only slightly different. These channel strips are the best. Don't waste your money on inferior products for your studio. The sound is crisp, clear and quite. Using for acoustic instruments and vocals. Shure SM81 and Neuuman Tlm 103 bring out some incredible sounds. Buy 1 and hear the difference.
