Overview

The TASCAM DIGITAL PORTASTUDIO DP-32SD is one of the best and most affordable ways to remove the mind-numbing glow of the computer screen from personal recording. It's safe to say, that after decades of manufacturing and transforming Portastudios, TASCAM has revolutionized the series once again. Employing 8 combo 1/4" - XLR inputs with +48V Phantom Power, 32 tracks (8 mono, 12 stereo) the ability to select between stereo and mono and an affluence of other key features, TASCAM DIGITAL PORTASTUDIO DP-32SD is an obvious choice for multi-channel home recording. The DP-32SD is just like its brother the DP-32, but without the built-in CDR/RW drive for recording media.

Utilizing SD/SDHC media ensures confident recording, free from shock due to loud sounds
The DP-32SD adopted use of SD/SDHC media. SD/SDHC cards provide secure shock resistance due to the absence of any rotary mechanism. File format of the DP-32SD is FAT 16 or 32. You can find the recorded files on your computer when connected via USB.

The last 12 faders are selectable between MONO and STEREO
The DP-32SD has 12 selectable tracks between MONO or STEREO. These tracks provide more flexibility. For example, set to STEREO for recording synthesizer, or set to MONO when recording guitar or vocal. Not only that, you can create ideal settings for each track. (set #9 to #12 STEREO, then set #13 to #22 MONO) If all tracks are set to MONO the DP-32SD becomes a 20-track multi track recorder.

21 faders eliminates layer structuring
The DP-32SD, even with the high number of tracks and features is one of the easiest multi-track recorders in the market to use. The DP-32SD has 20 track-faders and one master fader. You can control any track with ease.

The 3.5" full-color LCD and the self-illuminated buttons increase visibility
The DP-32SD has a 3.5" LCD screen and select self-illuminated buttons, making it easy to view your entire creative process. Some of the illuminated buttons include (SOURCE, SELECT, REC, MUTE).

12 rotary knobs linked to the LCD to help increase easy operation
The DP-32SD has employed rotary knobs to control qualities such as EQ, Effect Send and other related features.

I love my DP-32SD. I used to have a VS-880 a long while back. The Tascam was a replacement for that unit. It's much easier to use and the sound quality of the recordings is great. There was a review here saying that the volumes are too low, but I have not had that problem at all. I'm able to transfer my files to the computer and do my final edit with great results.

The only thing I found lacking in comparison to the VS-880 were the on board effects. The VS-880 had a much wider library. But that was easily fixed for me by using an external vocal effects processor and an external guitar processor.

I've used my DP32SD for about two months, now. I was using an analog Tascam 488 MkII before this one. The DP32 sounds good, but seems to be lacking the highs of audio. My Marshall amp screams tone and sustain, but the DP32 can't capture all of the tone because it lacks the highs. My little Tascam DR40 sounds better because it can record 24bit at 96k. So, the DP32 is missing a lot of tone in my guitar after recording. I was really disappointed as this portastudio is supposed to be Tascam's best studio to date. Also, this thing was made in China, and it's already broken. The assign, mixer, menu, home, eq, jog dial buttons do not work. One day these buttons just stopped working with no explanation. Now, I'm having to take it to Audio Electronics for them to fix. Tascam should've kept there business in Japan where it was top notch quality.

Comments about Tascam DP-32SD Digital 32-Track Portastudio:

I wanted to dabble in home recording of covers and originals, and record some bands. I have a small audio interface, but I didn't want to carry around a computer to record 2 tracks at time. Then there was learning curve of the DAW and worrying about latency.

The DP32SD is about the same cost of a decent 4-8 input usb/firewire audio interface. If you read the reviews for the traditional interfaces, you'll see most people have very mixed results with compatibility or reliability.

This unit is equivalent to carrying a laptop, mixer, and small audio interface. That's a decent compromise for me. Having 8 inputs and real faders and knobs to turn makes it so much easier to use. I don't think I'll never need all 32 tracks. It's really easy to get started and do some basic multi-tracking and editing.
I found the Sandisk 32GB SD cards for $20 that will hold 7hrs of 8 track 24/48k audio. 3.5hr of 16 tracks. More than I'll ever need. If I get to that level, I'll have a dedicated full time ProTools equipped studio.

Cons:
The built in effects have a learning curve and there are limitations on how they can be used.
Editing is somewhat hampered by the tiny screen. It's easy to export the tracks to waves for editing with a on a computer with a keyboard, mouse, and monitor.
It's larger than the Zoom R24 and the Zoom has a rhythm section.

Comments about Tascam DP-32SD Digital 32-Track Portastudio:

I read reviews stating this system was difficult to learn and use. I wanted to try it for myself and Yes, it is not easy to figure out. The on-board effects system is very poorly designed, not user friendly and otherwise very obsolete compared to computer based recording which is just as compact now with a laptop. With a laptop and REASON 8, I am able to edit 50x faster with less frustration and better results. I use this recording machine in my living room for capturing song ideas, in that regard, it works fine. The tracks I record in already have their sound, tone and effects set so I just use it as a 16 track recorder (advertised as 32, but those are stereo tracks which really means 16).

Returned Item/Horrid customer service from Tascam

      About Me Professional Musician

Comments about Tascam DP-32SD Digital 32-Track Portastudio:

After all the guitar center employees tried to push software on me, I really wanted something with a professional sound where I could just record and not have the learning curve of computer software. I ordered the Tascam 32SD and was very pleased with the recording quality and how easy it was to record, mix, pan and master. The quality is professional grade as far as sound goes. The issue I had began when trying to send the mastered song to the computer. It describes the transfer by USB as very simple and it will convert to a wav file to be able to burn to CD, email, etc. I mastered my songs with the faders just about at peak. And some tracks were literally as loud as they could go. Through the Tascam it was blaring loud and sounded amazing, but once transferred to a computer, (I tried both my Mac, and my PC) the songs were almost inaudible. If a regular recording is a 10 volume wise, these were 1.5 maybe 2. You could hear a snare hit and that's about it. After 2 days of talking to multiple people through Tascams tech support, all of which were beyond rude, they claimed they never heard of the issue before. They would never admit that mine might be faulty, they just repeatedly said that I didn't master it right or my computers were both with outdated sound cards (my PC is less than a month old). They kept telling me I didn't have the levels high enough even though they were maxed out. So after wanted to still keep it and try to work around the issue, after the horrible and insulting "customer support", I returned the unit. I didn't want to pay a lot of money for something and not be able to listen to it on anything other than the Tascam itself. Very disappointed with the experience all around. I gave it one star because it does sound great through the Tascam itself, but for musicians like me not wanting to learn the software, I think learning the software is less headache than dealing with Tascams customer support.

          Tascam Admits Problems

Comments about Tascam DP-32SD Digital 32-Track Portastudio:

I purchased this unit from Guitar Center a few months ago. Within a few weeks, I started getting pops and clicks in tracks I was recording and for no apparent reason. However, at first, the pops wouldn't show up in the mixdown stereo tracks, so they were just a big annoyance when listening to the playback. After a while, the pops and clicks were ending up in the mixdown track and that's when I called Tascam tech support. I was told they were aware of the problem and they were going to be releasing a new firmware "update". They couldn't tell me when the new release was coming out, so I guess I'm stuck with a defective product until such time as Tascam decides to support their products. Won't buy a Tascam unit again!
