Comments about SKB ATA Bass Case:

I have had an Open Cavity iSeries Bass Case for 4.5 years. I have flown with it about half a dozen times, but the main way I use it is in the back of the equipment truck. In that regard, it has been on nearly a thousand gigs. It has a few scratches, and I replaced the wheels at around the three year mark (replaced with solid wheels instead of 2 piece), but beyond that-it is going strong. For reference, I play a Sadowsky 5-24.

I liked this case enough that when I bought a second bass to take on the road, I ordered one of these, except in the P/J configuration since the new bass (Fender Precision 5) did not fit in the open cavity case. If it doesn't fit in the P/J case, I'll be returning it.

If you do a lot of air travel this is the case for you

Comments about SKB ATA Bass Case:

this thing is built like a tank and i think a tank could actually run over it without damaging the instrument... Very rugged...a bit on the heavy side but the wheels are a big help. Best case to protect your instrument if you are on the road a lot....I have one for my vintage Les Paul also...

Comments about SKB ATA Bass Case:

I was having a time finding a hard shell case that would fit my Parker Electric, and I wanted an SKB ATA I-series case. They are the best. I took a saw, and carpet knife to the interior, and in the end I got a custom case that provides superior protection for my instrument.

Comments about SKB ATA Bass Case:

Since air travel is in my immediate future, I needed an ATA case for my beloved 1979 Ibanez Musician. I started looking at traditional plywood and aluminum flight cases. The expense and the weight forced me to start looking at alternatives. I think this case is a happy medium between weight and level of protection. The case is well built and sturdy. My bass fits perfectly inside like the case was custom built for it. I especially like the wheels on one end so when I get to the terminal I can roll the case instead of carry it. Once you have the TSA check the case you can install up to 4 padlocks to keep the ramp guys from being "too curious" about what's in the case. It looks a little like a rifle case so I am a little worried about checking it at the terminal. I will always gate check if possible.

A work in progressۡ_.but so far so good.

        By Rob

        from New York, NY

Comments about SKB ATA Bass Case:

I'm being asked if I'd like to write a review, so here goes: The short review: I liked this bass case enough to cautiously buy a second one. The long review: First off, I've had a number of ATA rated cases for my basses, and while they've protected my instruments very well throughout the years, the one huge complaint I have about them is that, by being virtually indestructible, they are wayyyy too heavy. So heavy that it keeps me from using them when I should. Because flying can be so unpredictable with whether you can get your bass on the plane or not, I've often run the very heavy risk of bringing it to the gig and/or tour in a gig bag. The surefire way to feel safe about flying with your bass and its safety is to carry it on?.actually, sneak it on is more accurate. I've employed a whole series of techniques to bring it board even though I've been stopped many a time with the ubiquitous "you'll have to check that, no exceptions?". I've managed to sneak it on almost every time in that situation, but there have been the occasional heart stopping "sir, you can't bring that on board. You'll have to gate check it?" At that point, handing over my 68 P-bass to be stored somewhere with the baby strollers can be nerve wracking, to say the least. The solution to this dilemma is to case it in something solid. Even then, there are no guarantees to its safety, but you're moving in the right direction. (BTW, you all are insured, right? you'd better be insured?.its way too cheap to not insure your instrument?) Based on a friend's suggestion, I got this case as the replacement to my heavy flight case. It is so much lighter, and cannot express how happy it makes me. And it has wheels, for the airport. Its no smaller or bigger than the other styles, so thats a wash. Also, the interior has plenty of room for cables and strings and a pedal or two. It has other elements that seem cool, like the comfortable handle, which may or may not last, so who knows there. All handles break eventually. And it claims to be water proof, but I won't know how that goes until it really rains. The big question is whether or not its sturdy enough to call itself equal to other flight cases, and/or the real Pelican case. The wall of the SKB case gives a little when you lean on it, but not much. The comparable Pelican bass case I looked at has a couple more bands of plastic reinforcements to keep that phenomena from happening, but it may not matter. Or maybe it will. Who knows. I've had one SKB case for 3 months, and so far I've liked it enough to get a second for another bass. It's been awesome on the weight issue, and as far as protecting the instrument, it seems really cool, but I'm still in the wait-and-see mode. Today, I give it and optimistic 4 stars. In a year or two, if it takes a few hits and survives, I will enthusiastically update my rating to 5 stars. If however it takes a hit and something doesn't survive, I will come back here and drop the rating significantly. Hope this review helps?...Good luck touring!

        Excellent Case for MusicMan Stingray

Comments about SKB ATA Bass Case:

An an owner of a MusicMan Stingray 4-Sring bass, I originally had the stock MusicMan hardshell case. Although the case was great, it didn't last very long in a touring environment (i.e. constant loading/unloading and trailer travel). After shopping far and wide for a compatible case that was both more sturdy that my previous case, as well as ATA compliant. A professional custom made ATA case was out of my budget. After buying a Gator case and being VERY unimpressed (it both didn't properly support my bass, and it came damaged in the mail... not a good sign of how this thing would hold up in the long run), I stumbled upon this case. After reading several great reviews, even though no one indicated they used it for my type of bass, I decided to give it a shot. Very glad I did. This case is indeed universal and it DOES fit a MusicMan 4 or 5 string bass. The inside is plush hard plastic, but with foam outline along the neck for a secure fit. The latches are very sturdy, and the case can definitely take a beating. The latches, and independent locking-holes, are ATA compliant... i.e. you can fly with this case with no issues. The case also has wheels, which seem pretty sturdy so far. However, it's a good thing it does have wheels, because this case is VERY HEAVY. It's really one of my only complaints. Also, the top handle (that one would utilize to carry the case and not use the wheels) is set in the middle of the case... not offset to the back to compensate for the heavier body being on one side. This makes carrying it a little more challenging than a normal case. But for the quality of the build and the benefits, I'll deal with it.

Comments about SKB ATA Bass Case:

I just received this case today, I was very skeptical about it because every picture on the net has a Fender P bass in the case? This case fits the Fender American Standard Jazz bass so perfectly well, that you'd think to yourself, "how did they get that P bass to fit?"

The only reason I said it is bulky, is simply because it's about 4 inches longer than my fender hard case.. but let's be honest, the sheer quality and construction far surpasses any inconvenience there is.

This case is by far the best case I've ever owned or seen period! WELL WORTH THE MONEY you'll pay for it. Once you get it, take it from me... you'll say to yourself, "I would've given MORE for this case"

Buy it!!!! you won't be sorry!!!!! (and it looks even better with my "Trust Jesus" bumper sticker on it:-)

Also the storage is very good... as you can see, 1 strap, 2 sets of strings in boxes, 1 guitar cord, and my favorite tuner. As you can see, it all fits with room to spare!

Comments about SKB ATA Bass Case:

I bought this case with the open cavity for my Sadowsky (5-24). It fits extremely well with no wiggle room.

I needed a hardshell case because I'm doing more tours where the gear goes in a truck vs. taking the subway with the bass on my back (gigbag). This one seemed the most sturdy, and it has TSA locks as well as wheels.

I'm also flyiing a lot more than before, and wanted something that would be lighter than a typical Anvil-Style flight case, yet be more protective than a standard hardshell. This fit the bill.
