Pearl's Philharmonic Solid Maple snare is painstakingly hand-formed from a single ply of fully aged prime maple to achieve the pinnacle of concert snare drum attack response, dynamic capability, and tonal color in one instrument.
At the heart of the World Famous Philharmonic snare drum is the revolutionary SR-500 strainer system. The Triad Silent Strainer System provides three individual tension adjusters allowing you to fine tune the optimum tension for each type of snare material mounted on the drum and a single global adjustment knob on the butt side for quick overall tension adjustments.
A proprietary combination of three unique snare sets (coated cable, stainless cable & snappy wire) using both graduated and even tensioning, offers seamless timbre overlapping and ultra-smooth dynamic transition, plus a greatly extended dynamic and sensitivity range. All snares can be effortlessly changed by simply loosening the adjuster and one drum key rod.

Comments about Pearl Philharmonic Solid Maple Snare Drum:
A few months ago I had the pleasure of auditioning a new Pearl Philharmonic snare drum. The drum I auditioned was the maple ply model. I was so impressed that I just had to get me one! When it came down to purchase time however I opted for the higher priced solid maple 5 x 14 snare drum (in the stunning Hi Gloss Walnut Bordeaux finish) I am definitely not sorry that I did! The Pearl Philharmonic (PHM) is a totally professional level drum. On my first playing of this beautiful instrument I was amazed by the articulate crisp definition of each stroke. I attribute this ultra-definition to the combination of the lighter weight Remo Diplomat Renaissance head and the Pearl SR-500 triad snare system. Two different types of cable snares plus a set of snappy wire snares cover the complete dynamic range of this drum. I am achieving the perfect snare effect without any of that "bassy choking" sound and feel. I was slightly afraid at first that this new strainer system might prove to be a "finicky & fussy bell & whistle" type item. Oh quite contrare...this is absolutely the easiest snare adjustment system I've ever encountered. This drum is so fluid and easy feeling that it' a shear delight to play! The solid maple shell definitely has a different tonal characteristic than the ply maple drum. I'm not going to say that one is better than the other...only different. Every drummer has different preferences and some might even prefer the ply sound over the solid maple. The pricing difference between the two drums is a different story. The solid maple will cost you around $400.00 more. So....is the price differential worth it? That is a personal choice of course but for me the solid maple is the hands down clear choice. In a perfect compliment of sound, the solid maple 5 x 14 PHM offers the clear crisp definition combined with a very solid mid-range sound that just blooms into the room. Although the ply PHM model is still a great sounding drum you don't quite get that same bloom (in my opinion). That reason alone was woth the hefty price difference for me. All my brother drummers are aware of the many great snare drums (both name-brand and custom) available on the market today. Competition is indeed keen and the choices can sometimes be overwhelming. I will say that like those other top contenders, the fit, finish and construction quality on the Pearl PHM are absolute top-notch The one thing that does set this drum apart (and ahead of) the competitors is the SR-500 triad snare system. This is no "gimmick"....it's an incredible innovation that is ahead of its time! I invite you to try it and hear for yourselves. Pearl was thoughtful enough to include a tuning-tips manual along with easy instructions on how to adjust the snare system. The whole exercise is extremely fast and easy to perform. I tried some of my own tuning pitches but ended up using (pretty darned close to) Pearl's recommendations. The results are beyond my expectations in every way. Apparently, Pearl knows their PHM drum well! Yes, there are many high-end snare drums available today, but any drummer seriously considering investing $$$ in a top professional instrument should strongly give this drum much consideration. It's very obvious that the folks at Pearl put in some prodigious effort, time and research into this marvelous instrument. It's no coincidence that this drum is being used by many of the top performing and recording Orchestras today. One last thing is that this drum is not limited to Orchestral performance but can be used with complete success in any number of musical application. The good folks at Guitar Center played a huge roll (pardon the pun) in my acquisition of this fine instrument so many thanks to Chris and Trevor, Alexis and whole drum gang at GC Summerlin.
