When Steve Vai teamed up with Ibanez in 1987, little did he realize what a lasting impact his signature model guitar would have. Today, the JEM is an iconic instrument immediately identified with the legendary guitarist. As part of the Ibanez Premium series, the JEM77WDP is a high quality instrument created for the working pro. This latest version of the JEM, with its unique look, brings a new taste to the lineup.

The JEM77WDP is crafted with a Rosewood top/Mahogany body along with a distinctive wooden pickguard, matching headstock, and wooden control knobs. Its elegant Tree of Life inlay prominently stretches along the contrasting Rosewood fretboard. The Wizard neck includes Jumbo frets finished with the Premium Fret Edge Treatment for smooth, comfortable performance. The Edge Zero II tremolo bridge features a lower profile design for comfort and a stud lock function for superior tuning stability.

Electronics include two DiMarzio Dark Matter 2 humbucker pickups (one at the neck, one in the bridge) with an enchanting custom pickup grill and a DiMarzio Dark Matter 2 single coil pickup in the middle position for a wide array of rock tones. A soft case is included.

Comments about Ibanez JEM77WDP Steve Vai Signature JEM Premium Series 6-String Electric Guitar:

context first... my 'go to' guitar for the last 15 years has been an Ibanez RG 3120 Prestige. Even though i really do like this JEM Woody Premium, the Prestige is still #1. here's my story...
first is that i read several online reviews and saw the Vai "making of the Woody" video, and everything said "jumbo frets and scalloped fretboard on 21 through 24". those reviews or marketing seem to have disappeared now. good. because this guitar does NOT have jumbo frets, nor does it have scalloped frets.
Second. Not all ibanez 'wizard' necks are the same. the Premium necks are a very different feel to the Prestige necks. Similar in fretboard radius, but chunkier in width in the neck itself. i'm okay with that, i'm aware that the Singapore production of the Premium models is not of the same detailed attention to a finer finish on the neck profile as the Japan factory prestige models. you really do get what you pay for.
next issue was the whammy bar. in factory setup, the whammy bar would knock the volume knob when it rotated. that seemed like a silly design issue that really should be sorted out. after i had finished setup adjustments (to my liking) i still had this issue. fix... put a small 'shim' of plastic in the recess the whammy arm goes into so it is raised by a millimeter or so. that's all it needed.
Neck setup! the neck relief was far too curved for more as it came delivered. the curve was to my feeling way more extreme than needed to be with a modest but still high action. it took me about 3 weeks to tweak the truss rod to get the neck near flat, adjust the height of the edge-pro trem, then the tension on the trem claw springs, then rinse and repeat until finally had it exactly where i wanted it. a flat neck with a really low action all the way up the neck with no buzzing. if you're not comfortable doing that yourself, budget to have an experienced tech do it for you, it dramatically changes the playing feel of the instrument!
