Overview

The Fin Dynamic Mic captures remarkably natural, clear sound and is designed for live sound, recording, and broadcast applications. The exceptional performance is achieved thanks to a special magnet structure with a large 1-1/18" aluminum low mass voice coil assembly similar to the Heil PR 20. The frequency response is 60 Hz - 18 kHz with that traditional Heil Sound mid range "bouquet" at 4 kHz, presenting incredible brilliance and presence. The Heil Fin exhibits a tight linear cardioid pattern. The chrome finish is a special "showchrome," where the steel body is copper-plated and then double chrome-plated, producing a deep chrome finish. A blue molded internal foam windscreen inside the grill covers the large diameter Heil dynamic microphone element mounted in a specially tooled Sorbothane shockmount.

The fun part of The Fin is the four L.E.D. lamps mounted inside. These can only be illuminated when using The Fin into one of the 3-pin balanced XLR inputs of a professional mixing console that supplies a +48 volt DC phantom voltage down the balanced mic line.

Standard 5/8" 27-thread connection allows The Fin to be mounted on booms or floor stands.

The Fin mic from Heil Sound is terrific for vocals, instrument amplifiers, harmonica, and speech, and puts the fun back into the dynamic microphone.

Like I said, this mic does sound great, and it is a visual stunner. Unfortunately, it's usefulness is limited (I would give it 3 stars for "usefulness" if there was that category).

Though I have been tempted to sell it for this reason, I still can't seem to part with it so I guess I'll just learn to live with it's limitations.

I give this info. simply as a "heads up" to others considering this mic. Worth the money? Yes. Do I use it as much as I'd like too? No. Would I buy it again? Doubtful.
Made in USA... great looks end extended frequency response compared to most dynamic microphones. Very solid.
I bought this mic about 2 years ago to use mostly live with a retro, Chicago style blues and swing band. It does indeed look awesome onstage and sounds wonderful too.

My only (yet somewhat big) beef is that this mic does tend to feedback quite easily, much more so than an SM58. I own several nice mics, including large diaphragm condensers (AKG 414 for the home studio etc.) and wanted something better for the stage than the standard SM58. This seemed like the ticket... a large diaphragm dynamic! ... and the the looks were so outstanding.

This mic will indeed blow away an SM58, but once you roll off the highs to keep the feedback in check, or simply turn the mic down and try to eat it, in a live situation, you lose the advantage (and I can sing quite loud), I also like to be soft and intimate on the ballads as well, I can achieve this, (sounds great) but too often requires "riding" the mic volume in live situations. That means an aware sound guy, or simply not being able to get a good hot signal for vocal monitors.

I still use this on sax in my live set-up and it works great for that as well, (the sax is louder so no problems as the mic is not as hot).

I can get a much hotter signal on an SM58, so I seem to be going back to that for vocals, as I don't have the time in most situations, to hassle with the sound guy. (It's important to just be able to get up and deliver, especially if you are sharing a stage with another band when quick set-up is a must.)

I am considering buying an automated "feedback destroyer/notch filter" simply so I can use this mic on vocals again.
Worth the price, just beware of this mic's quirks.

When I received the Heil Fin I was impressed with the quality construction. It's a very attractive and sturdy microphone that comes with a well made case. When I tried it out in the PA I was equally impressed. I did an A/B test between it and a Shure Beta 58, which is the standard vocal mic I've used for a number of years. They were quite comparable; so I was very happy with the sound quality of the Fin. However, when I turned on the LEDs a very noticeable hum was induced into the PA. I tried a few different configurations, including an external phantom power supply between the mic and the mixing board rather than using the board's phantom - but no luck, there was far too much noise to be usable. I've been using the same PA setup for a number of years. I've used it with a variety of mics, including condensers requiring phantom power. I never had that noise problem before. But with the Fin installed it happened every time - LEDs off, sounds great; LEDs on, tons of hum. I was quite disappointed, because it's a great looking and sounding mic. But it costs quite a bit more than something similar like a Shure 55, no doubt at least in part because of the LED feature (that's especially true of the red LED model, which I purchased). Bottom line, in every configuration I tried in my PA it was unusably noisy with the LEDs on. Oh, and I forgot to mention, it made a huge "POP!" noise when the LED on/off switch was toggled. That means if you forget to mute the channel before toggling the LEDs your going to give your audience a loud, unpleasant noise to listen too - not cool. Heil needs to either work out the bugs with the LED system, or just release a version of the Fin without the LEDs for a lower price. It's a nice looking (and IMO better sounding) alternative to a Shure 55 even without the LEDs, but it's not price competitive. So I'd give it at least a 4, maybe a 5 on sound; but a 1 on the LEDs (great idea, terrible execution). Overall, I'd give it a 3. If you like the look and want a great sounding vintage style mic get the cheapest model and just don't use the LEDs.

Comments about Heil Sound The Fin Dynamic Microphone White:

I have a home studio, and this mic is always up and ready to go on its bright chrome stand. I have it on a mixer, and that in turn goes into my digital recorder. When I turn on the mixer, and that beautiful glowing mic lights up before me, I feel energized, and ready to record!

The sound is so fantastic, I swear it adds depth to my voice, and it reproduces acoustic guitar sound very well. It is a perfect podcast mic that also doubles as a music recording mic, AND as a music performance mic- hey, I guess it triples rather than doubles.

Love this mic- it is the only one I use now, and I have a number.

Comments about Heil Sound The Fin Dynamic Microphone White:

Purchased for stage vocals use instead of the venue standard Shure SM58. This mic sounds significantly better than a 58, very clear and present sound, great noise deflection and not boomy. It looks amazing on stage, especially when you engage the LED lights by powering it from the board with phantom power. The only down sides are that you screw it on to the stand, therefore you cannot just pull it off and walk around with it nor can you just pop it back on the stand. The second issue ties in with the first in that if you do hold it by hand, it sure is heavy! BUT i will say that the sound quality and looks make up for the convenience of hand holding. If your a singer who tends to pull the mic of the stand, this may not be the one for you.

I'm a pro Blues piano player/singer, gig 2-4 times a week & have owned this mic for over two years. It has a beautiful vintage look but more importantly it sounds great.

I've owned the Shure 55, 58, Beta 58, Sennheiser & other major brands but thie Heil suits my needs perfectly. Other reviewers have said it has brighter highs & that is true, but you can adjust that at the sound board. Others complain of feedback but I haven't encountered that problem in 200+ gigs. Comes in a beautiful case but I don't use it. I keep it on my heavy duty chrome mic stand & use a heavily padded golf club cover to protect it. One warning is the bolt holding the mic position comes loose easily. A quarter or a standard screwdiver won't tighten it so you'll need something with a longer & thicker blade.

The blue LED lights really show off the mic & I've had many compliments but the sound is what counts & this Heil has it.

          Smooth and beautiful

          By Jay Mueller

          from Milwaukee WI

Comments about Heil Sound The Fin Dynamic Microphone White:

After receiving my new Heil Fin I immediately put it up against a recently acquired Shure Super 55, a Shure SM58 and an ATM61HE. The Fin is a nice sounding mic. I would characterize it as warm, smooth -- almost silky. The signal is reasonably hot -- comparable to the ATM61HE and perhaps a little hotter than the SM58. As with any mic you have too watch your plosives, but I would describe the pickup pattern and proximity effect as reasonably forgiving. If you are trying to decide between the Fin and the Shure Super 55 I would say the following: both are good mics, sound good, look good, function well in small venue/crowded stage scenario (which is what I was able to simulate.) The Super 55 sounded brighter to my ears on both male and female vocals. If your primary concern is cutting through the mix I would lean toward the Super 55. If you are operating in lower decibel environments and performing lounge/torch song/jazz stuff the Fin might suit you better. Try both if you can. It's definitely a matter of personal taste. You will notice a clear difference between the two. All things considered, I'm glad I have the Fin. While my main vocalists are fighting over the Super 55 I'll just step up to the Fin to contribute my backing vocals. Oh, yes, as for the LEDs -- I worried they could make the chrome package look a little cheesy, but in fact it is a very handsome mic whether the lights are on or off. I've got blue, which is eye-catching without being annoying.

Comments about Heil Sound The Fin Dynamic Microphone White:

This is a great mic. Sounds awesome, looks even better. Only problem is lack of an On/Off and make sure you dont tilt the head ALL the way back, for some reason, the wires aren't long enough, and it will rip them off of the internal XLR connector. If you are handy, you can take it apart and resolder and fix it, but, I feel that shouldn't have to be done on something brand new, but I didn't feel like waiting 2 weeks for another. But all in all, it's an awesome Mic, just be kinda gentle with it.

Comments about Heil Sound The Fin Dynamic Microphone White:

I have a total of 5 Fins, four blue, one red. Color is just aesthetic, no difference in performance.
            - Rugged, built like a tank and nice case included for extra protection
            - quality sound, good off axis rejection.
            - I am using with horns (multiple saxes) and vocals
            - I am using Shure KSM9 and Beta 87s on my front line, and 2 fins for backups singers. The sound very good comparatively, but the Shures have more presence, refuted in the price.
            - I am using a Yamaha M7CL for FOH and a Behringer X32 for backup - I have no problem getting excellent results from both consoles with the fin. I have especially good results from the horns.
            - I record all live performers to multitrack DAW. The fins sound great on playback.
            - the on board lighting is nice for immediately checking connection, but the midis dynamic - so they are only a helpful connection verification....
            - I haven't figured out the price bump for White or Red - if anything, Id think Red (being the least expensive LED as a single part) would be cheaper, but the blue is the lesser expensive one. I have fur blue and one red (I purchased the blue ones new, the red one, used - no need for the upcharge for no benefit,)
            - For Vocals, in my opinion, the Super 55 beats the fin, and the fun beats the SH55 (super 55 is essentially a beta 58 capsule, the H55 is essentially a std SM58)

Overall, nice rugged mic. Ive been happy with mine. I get a lot of compliments on the sound and look from audience members and other professionals.

Have been using a Shure 55sh for the longest time decided to upgrade to this mic becouse of the LED. Good for use on any stage and a real eye catcher. The sound is a bit brighter than the Shure but keeps the same look of the old style mics with a modern twist. Went with the white.

Sounds Even Better Than It Looks!

              By Brad Bentley

              from Seattle, WA

Comments about Heil Sound The Fin Dynamic Microphone White:

THE STRAIT-UP TRUTH: I am a professional work-for-hire musician (keyboardist and vocalist). I ordered this mic (since it is not in stock at GC)and hoped it would be what I expected. Simply put, I AM ABSOLUTELY AMAZED AND IMPRESSED! I didn't expect for the mic to sound better than it looked! HOW I USE THIS MIC: I run all my vocals through a TC Electronics Helicon VoiceLive 2. With the Phantom Power turned on, the LED's work wonderfully, adding a "cool factor" that everyone talks about. The Fin is now my main mic on stage for every gig (unless the band I'm hired for thinks I'm out-gunning the lead guy). SO HOW DOES IT REALLY SOUND??? The sound of this mic is truly awesome. Its presence, punch and clarity are remarkable. In my line of work, I have sang into almost every professional mic out there and can tell you that this mic is definitely one of the best sounding mics I've used. I am more than satisfied, and I highly recommend this tool for anyone serious about their vocals. WHY GET ONE??? There are certain tools that set you apart from the rest. This mic is one of those tools. All Heil mics are a smart choice for the professional, and the Fin just happens to be sexy as well! WHAT WOULD I CHANGE? I would change how the LED's illuminate the mic. You can see four "hot spots" where the LED's are located, and the light needs to be more diffused in order to equally illuminate the entire grill of the mic. My solution was to open the mic and install some wax paper around the sides of the grill on the inner side of the colored windscreen, thus diffusing the LED's and giving the mic a uniform look when lit. I would also make the windscreen opaque white and put multicolored LED's inside with a small button on the mount so that the LED's could be set to Red, Blue, Green, White, etc. I'm not about to buy three of these just for three colors, but I would willingly pay a little more for the multicolor addition.
