Great P/U But a Challenge to Temporarily Install

Comments about Fishman Rare Earth Pro-Rep-102 Humbucking Soundhole Pickup:

Outstanding quality/sound. Wonderful piece of equipment. Biggest challenge: When installing, the cork-padding on both sides (and the adjusting screws that don't open up that wedged opening) make it difficult to slide the P/U onto both sides of the sound hole. I had to take a screwdriver and wedge/open both sides some (after loosening both screws) which resulted in some crumbling of the cork padding on both sides of the P/U. For someone who only uses the P/U for open mic opportunities, it makes it troublesome. Thinking about permanently mounting the P/U to avoid the crumbling cork. Again, sound is great.

Comments about Fishman Rare Earth Pro-Rep-102 Humbucking Soundhole Pickup:

I bought this pickup for a 12 string dreadnought. It sounds awesome! It was very easy to install. Playing it through a clean channel on a Line 6 Vetta. I'm really sold on the quality and performance of Fishman products as I previously bought one of their acoustic amps recently.

      Natural sound

      By GLENN KRASLEY

      from Wilmington, DE

Comments about Fishman Rare Earth Pro-Rep-102 Humbucking Soundhole Pickup:

Been looking for a pick up to amplify my Gibson J45. Love the natural sound of that guitar and wanted something that would stay true to the acoustic tone. Tried the rare earth HB after reading the other reviews and was not disappointed. Absolutely great pu. Keeps as true to the natural sound as anything I've heard. I actually like this better than the factory expression system in my Taylor and I thought that was really good until I heard the Fishman. It's dead quiet too. No hum or feedback due to the humbucking features. You get volume control only with this but I prefer to use the amp to control everything else anyway, so no down side for me as is. I knew the minute I heard this, it was going to stay with the Gibson for good, so I permanently mounted it. Very easy to do if you're handy with tools but not for the faint of heart. You will need to drill out the end pin hole on your guitar to accommodate the end jack and will also need to shorten the lead that's supplied and do some soldering. Take it to a professional if any of this makes you nervous. Was so thrilled, I bought a second one within a week for another acoustic I have and permanently mounted that one too. Just be sure to leave enough lead wire slack to allow you to take the pu out of the hole for battery changes. I highly recommend this to anyone looking to amplify a straight acoustic and wants to stay as true to its original tone as possible.

      The next level!

Comments about Fishman Rare Earth Pro-Rep-102 Humbucking Soundhole Pickup:

Just after Christmas 2012 I had this installed in my Epiphone EJ200. I usually obsess over things like this for a while, reading review after review of the choices and looking at vids on YouTube. Finally I pulled the trigger on this one, and I must say it's pretty darn impressive. It gives a really really close to true acoustic sound, but where it totally shines is when you throw in a bit of chorus or some other effect. Five minutes ago I was playing along with some bluesy backing tracks through a Vox AD30VT modeling amp. I dialed in a nice jazzy tone, added some delay and I am VERY happy with the sound. I had expected the original batteries to have fizzled by now, but 11 months and hundreds of hours later, they are still good. I do need to mention that they had the price for the passive pickup on the stack of these active ones, which we discovered after it was in my guitar, so I got the deal of the year! Pay the extra, it will be worth it spread out over the years.

      Really Great!

Comments about Fishman Rare Earth Pro-Rep-102 Humbucking Soundhole Pickup:

I purchased this today along with a Taylor DN3. This pickup is really great, has plenty of power to stand out in a mix and adds a little natural reverb to your guitar, IMHO. I would recommend this for live performing, as that is what I use it for.

Great compromise for plugged in acoustic tone

      By TI

      from Seattle, WA

Comments about Fishman Rare Earth Pro-Rep-102 Humbucking Soundhole Pickup:

The number one thing to understand about acoustic pickups is that they won't sound as good as your guitar does when it's doing what it's meant to do- which is play acoustically! Thinking that you will find something that recreates your acoustic sound perfectly is a dragon chasing proposition. That said, you can still get good sound when you plug in. It's just important to focus on the plugged in sound and not perfectly recreating the acoustic sound cuz it ain't happening. The Rare Earth humbucker does very well at giving me an acoustic sound that is small show worthy. It is well balanced and even sounds good plugged straight into a PA of reasonable quality, though, I wouldn't go out without my preamp there to fill in the sound if the PA (or sound guy) sucks. The on board volume is nice, but it's almost always at 10. It's also important that I can remove it when we're not playing a show. The main drawback is that having the pickup mounted in the soundhole does affect the natural, unplugged acoustic tone of your guitar- something I'm not willing to permanently compromise on my 1973 Mossman. So I won't be doing the end pin install. And even though it sounds good, I'll still be using high end mics for recording. All in all, it's a great product and worth the money.

      amazing sound-beats any onboard electronics

      By Earl Brackett

      from Greensboro, NC

Comments about Fishman Rare Earth Pro-Rep-102 Humbucking Soundhole Pickup:

this pickup sounds amazing, I wanted to play it cheap with Dean Markley, then with a suggestion from the sales dude I checked out the active Fishman, the overall design and the fact that the jack fitted like an endpin sold me...I've played high end acoustics with onboard electronics and they produce nothing like the rich sound that this active pickup produces, absolutely no noise from picking or fingerstyle, it's a beautiful product.
