Comments about EMG J-X Active Bass Pickup Set:
I was excited about getting these. Sonically they lived up to my expectations: very crisp and dynamic. I love the active tone which is a VLPF (variable low pass filter). My understanding is that it cut treble only and doesn't boost, however when the tone is "all the way up" (no attenuation) it is very bright and somewhat similar to a passive pickup that's had the treble boosted. No complaints about that here. I like that feature and the fact that I can hear several points of attenuation as I turn the knob, unlike the standard passive tone that basically gives you two, maybe three audible sound differences. These pickups are very quiet and quite responsive. I can hear a lot of growl coming out of my bass and I attribute a lot of that to these pickups. Customer service at EMG was not great. The bridge pickup was slightly deformed (it was slightly wider than normal, as if they poured too much epoxy into the mould so that it caused the plastic cover to bulge a little. I had to route the pickup cavity a little to make it fit (it was an old beat up bass so I didn't mind). I emailed EMG tech support describing the problem but they apparently didn't read my email because their solution was that I needed the shorter neck pickup, which wasn't true. I had explained that an older set of EMG J-set fit fine in two of my basses (no I don't have a Mexican Jazz) but the JX did not. I took a picture of both pickups sets side by side with a ruler to demonstrate that they were different widths. All I wanted to know was if the J-X are wider because I was interested in buying another set for my other bass. So far I haven't received an answer to my email, which is disappointing. So to sum up: good product (beware defective units) / less than great customer service from EMG.
