Overview

The DiMarzio John Petrucci Pickup set contains 2 well-designed pickups: the LiquiFire (neck) pickup and the Crunch Lab (bridge) pickup. Easy to install, they'll bring a collection of powerful rock tones to your guitar while reducing noise. Two sizes of pairs are available: the 42mm is for normal spacing and the 43mm is for Floyd Rose and other wide-spaced tremolo bridges.

LiquiFire (neck)
One thing has stayed consistent throughout John Petrucci's long and successful career: the DiMarzio pickups in his guitars. John has been pushing the envelope of progressive metal since the late eighties, and the DiMarzio LiquiFire Neck Model resulted from the most recent collaboration with John. He used it throughout Dream Theater's tenth studio album, "Black Clouds & Silver Linings."
John swears this is the best live and studio sound he has ever had. He wanted a neck pickup with a flowing, singing solo tone when used with a heavily overdriven amp and a clear chord sound with a clean amp setting.

Since the mid 1990s, John's neck pickup sound has been based on either the standard Air Norton or the custom version in his Ernie Ball guitars. The LiquiFire has several significant differences. Its treble response is warmer and smoother while bass response is tighter and brighter. The total sound has a more focused voice which works equally well for highly overdriven solos and complex, clean chords.

Crunch Lab (bridge)
The DiMarzio Crunch Lab Bridge Model ensued from the most recent collaboration with John. He used it throughout Dream Theater's tenth studio album, Black Clouds & Silver Linings as well. John swears this is the best live and studio sound he has ever had, and the name says it all - "crunch" is what it's all about with a big, tight sound that's neither muddy nor thin.

The Crunch Lab is noteworthy for what it doesn't do - it's not a screamer, and it's not about thundering lows. It's louder, and the highs have more depth. The lows and mids are more open, and this is crucial for playing chords with body and presence through a gained-out amp. The voicing of the pickup is also different enough to the point that John prefers the Crunch Lab to be installed in almost all of his guitars (including the JP Bari) with the solid bar toward the neck, regardless of the guitar's tuning.

A bit of background - the guitar I installed these into was a custom built kit guitar I put together through warmoth. Maple top, mahogany body, with a maple neck. Originally I had a PAF pro in the neck and an evolution in the bridge. Over time and experimenting with my other guitars, the PAF started sounded to "round", lacking definition. The evolution sounded really thin, and in combination they really weren't very inspiring on a clean channel. I was looking for something with more definition in the neck, but still really creamy with distortion, and something rich/thick/punchy in the bridge that still had some warmth to it. I had good results with the air norton / d-sonic combo in my 7 string, so figured I'd try to latest and greatest from JP and Dimarzio.

The liquifire and crunch lab satisfied everything I was looking for. It was the missing piece for this guitar for sure, it sounds so much more alive than it did. The liquifire has a similar creaminess of the air norton, but has a little bit more attack and has some pretty cool squishy overtones with distortion. The crunch lab is powerful - it has some balls. Very punchy, tight bottom end, but a very clear top end as well. In combination on a clean channel, these pickups produce a very clear, chimey clean tone that is a pleasure to listen to.

You can't go wrong with these pickups. Even if you don't like them, you've got 30 days to return them to dimarzio and swap them for something else.

I honestly don't know what was going on with these pickups today, but I've been interested in them for months now, and they absolutely did not live up to the reviews. I'm hoping someone just jacked up their installation, because even my 13 year old son thought they sounded terrible.

They were mounted in a JP Ernie Ball Music Man that easily cost twice as much as my RG920 w. stock DiMarzio/IBZ pups, but I'd pay twice as much to keep the sound coming out of my RG.

The JP tone overall was very muddy to my ears, not very clearly defined, and there was not a substantial enough difference between the Cruchlab and Liquifier tones themselves. The Liquifier just ended up sounding like someone had put a blanket over the Crunchlab - not the smooth lead definition I had expected. Not only do my stocks get a MUCH better lead tone from the neck, but they get a more well defined crunch from the bridge as well. Who knows, maybe DiMarzio did something with those RG pups that the don't normally do with stocks, but there's no way I'd pay to "upgrade" to the JPs.

Just to show that I'm not tone deaf, I also played through a pair of BKP VH2s that same afternoon, and those were CLEARLY a cut above my stocks. The crunch and cleans had an awesome boost and separation at the bridge, and the neck pup gave me the very bold and smooth lead tones I had been hoping to get from the JP set. Sweep arpeggios had perfect separation and articulation with each note. Wouldn't give the JPs a second try, really.

Comments about DiMarzio John Petrucci Pickup Set:

I put these pickups in my fender squire Jim root signature guitar because the stock pickups have horrible tone and no sustain. So after putting these pickups in it was like a night and day difference, these pickups sound better than active EMGs! I also have a ESP James Hetfield snakebyte with the het set and now my squire is my number one guitar I play it the most just because the sound is unlike anything I've ever heard from passive pickups. Needless to say all my passive guitars will be getting these pickups put in them I am now a dimarzio guy for life! Can't go worng with Jon petrucci pickups!!!

The cleans are crispy, the distortions are defined, the harmonics are clear as day. These offer quite a variety of tone, whether it be the crunchyness of a breakdown, or a sweet lead.

Comments about DiMarzio John Petrucci Pickup Set:

If you want a pickup that's got the crunch and not a lot of noise with plenty of out put this is it. If you play Metal u will love this pickup. It allowed me to turn down my gain and get a cleaner crunch with more bite or attack and leaves more room for tone shaping since you can back off of the gain.

Comments about DiMarzio John Petrucci Pickup Set:

These pickups replaced the original pickups in my Gibson Les Paul Standard Traditional Pro. They carry an incredible amount of heavy, full sound. Even at high gain settings there is virtually no feed-back and screaming clear power. If you are looking for a beautiful sounding passive pickup set, your search is now over. I would recommend them to anyone I meet.

Comments about DiMarzio John Petrucci Pickup Set:

In my never-ending quest to find the "right" pickups, I took a chance on this set. I don't really listen to Dream Theater, but I admire John Petrucci's playing. I was originally put off by the pickup ratings, as they looked too hot for my tastes.

Boy, was I wrong! The Crunch Lab is especially good at speaking clearly. Notes stay crisp even under the most extreme gain. Solos don't smear. The tone is balanced, with no frequency sticking out. You do lose some of that unpredictable squeal, but the benefits far outweigh the shortcomings.

The Liquifire is a bit less impressive, but serviceable in the neck position. It's a good match for the Crunch Lab, and they blend well together.

I put this set in my Ibanez RG42T, which is a neck-through with a mahogany body. It's notoriously fickle, but these are the best pickups I've had in it. I've yet to try the new Illuminator pickups from John and Dimarzio, but if they're anything like these, they'll be great.

        Highly recommended.

Comments about DiMarzio John Petrucci Pickup Set:

Significantly improved the tone of my Ibanez RG470. I kept the stock single coil and these blend very well with it. The Crunch Lab has the right amount of bite, and the Liquifier although warmer, is still well defined and can also be used as a soloing pickup. I haven't tried them in my gig rig yet, but I'm impressed with the sound thru both of my practice rigs. Looking forward to using them in this weekend's performance

Improved the sound of my RG470's stock pickups. I kept the stock single coil which seems to blend well with the DiMarzios. Haven't tried it thru my gig rig yet, so this weekend will tell the tale, but based on what I've heard so far, I have high expectations.

            ARTICULATION!!

Comments about DiMarzio John Petrucci Pickup Set:

I put these on a USA Jackson Soloist, they replaced the stock Seymour Duncan SH-6's and what a difference! The SD's are great pickups, but on this guitar they got lost when I was up on the 24th fret, my high notes had zero sustain. I put the Petrucci's on this guitar and now my highs scream for vengeance! The difference is night and day, also when I roll off the volume I can get a perfect crunch without any hiss or static out of my all tube Marshall full-stacks in mega-overdrive mode. I have perfect tonal control just using the volume alone, but when I mix in the tone control too, I can get any sound I want and then some. Full chords sound clear even when running the Marshalls at max gain, and power chords are incredible. I'm putting these on all my Jacksons and Deans, the best pickups I've used by far, extremely versatile.

Comments about DiMarzio John Petrucci Pickup Set:

Amazing and versitile! I have this set in my Ibanez S420 with a Dimarzio True Velvet middle single coil. The 5-way switch splits the humbuckers in positions 2 and 4.

The set blows me away because of how versitile it is without sacrificing in other areas. For example, I have a guitar with EMG 81/85 and the Dimarzio JP set can do everything the EMGs do! The difference being that the EMGs are more neutral whereas the Dimarzio JP set have more character (and are more touch sensative). For Prog rock and other sorts of metal, this is an easy choice! I can even get tight chords with the neck pickup.

Another example of versatility is the split humbucker sound that provides a full range of single coil sounds for clean playing. I have a strat with Texas Specials and while it does sound better, the Dimarzio JP set also sounds very good. This gives me the ability to be musically flexible with a single guitar. I can play through a Fender style amp like a twin-reverb or a deluxe and have a very enjoyable result. Again, with a variety of tones from clean to blues to classic rock.

I replaced a Joe Satriani set (Dimarzio PAF Joe and 'Moe Joe) with this John Petrucci set. The JP set is head and shoulders above the JS set. The PAF Joe is a very expressive neck pickup, but the Liquifire is expressive AND good for chords. Yes, I now get tight chords from my neck pickup!

I can't imagine asking more from a set a pickups. I can get nice cleans, classic rock (not as good as a Seymore Duncan Pearly Gates, but the PG can't do what the JP set can do), and any metal sound I want. EXCELLENT PICKUP SET!!!
