First let me say, I have been playing Electric Bass and performing live in both smaller and larger venues for 35+ years now, and over the years I owned or used most every bass rig out there, SWR,Fender, G&k, Hartke, Eden, etc...pound for pound & pricing this Ampeg PF-800 head is the real deal..in so many ways, power to spare, Tone Flexibility, size and weight! and pretty much plug and play, including many features found on the more esoteric brands..However those esoteric brands are missing the true and time tested AMPEG sound. if you want punch, power, reliability, on a working mans budget..think no more purchase this PF-800!

The "Ampeg sound" is popular with many bass players, so I thought I'd give this amp a try since it also promised high power for relatively low money in a lightweight amp. I also liked that it had a headphone jack and controls for mixing.

I set all the tone controls to noon, compression off, and played it through my 410 cabinet. Just as I was thinking it sounded dark, my wife walked in and said "you turned the bass up too high." Definitely not much of a mid presence.

I had to use "Ultra hi" switch and jack up the midrange tone control just to get out of the scooped sound. But with that much mid boost, it hisses like a leaking tire. That hiss was also evident in my headphones (which also sounded dark with tone controls at neutral).

If you like the "warm," vintage sound, it might work well for you. But I like a more transparent, modern forward sound and this amp definitely didn't work for me.

Comments about Ampeg Portaflex PF800 800W Class D Bass Amp Head:

Of course I was pushing the limits of this little head to a Carvin 8x10 when it first showed up, and realized that the input signal was too hot when I'd attack my notes hard and my gain was too hot, I cut the gain, cut the eq a little, added slight compression for my 5 string doom sound and boosted the volume more with no problems. The problem is really having the gain too high and not realizing how much the EQ effects signal input. I'd recommend this to anyone who is having amp cut out problems, watch that bass, too much bass gets muddy anyways.

Comments about Ampeg Portaflex PF800 800W Class D Bass Amp Head:

This head has great tone and more than enough power that I need. I got the gig bag and foot pedal, run it through a custom made 15" cab loaded with a Peavey Black Widow speaker and Bam! Small very powerful portable rig. I have two 4/10 cabinets but I like the portability and tone of the 15". Although I wasn't very impressed with the overdrive tone I got with cranking the gain so I got an MXR bass overdrive and now the tone is killer!

Definitely not a one trick pony. This thing absolute SLAMS through my 2 Ampeg 15 cabs. Thick, warm, but punchy tone. Never gets lost in the mix. Very versatile. I've gigged with this for a whole year of at least two loud gigs a week and never had a problem with it.
