Overview

The Novation Launchpad Control Surface communicates bi-directionally with Ableton Live software to give you real-time session feedback. Now you really can Play Live. Launchpad ships with a dedicated 'Launchpad edition' of Ableton Live 8, but can control almost any other music software using Novation's award-winning Automap control software.

Launchpad was jointly designed by Novation and Ableton to bring the features of Live to modern musician's fingertips. The 8x8 grid of backlit buttons addresses a multitude of functions with the help of mode selectors that transport you around the Live interface.

Flip from launching clips to tweaking mixer settings in a stroke. Launch your song into a heavy buildup, then switch to a synth or a drum machine for an impromptu solo at the touch of a button. It's all possible on Novation Launchpad, and all without touching the mouse or keyboard!

Novation Launchpad is bus-powered from a single USB connection, and has a 10" square desktop footprint. Rubber feet ensure Launchpad stays secure on the surface on which it's placed, and an optional padded neoprene travel sleeve is available. It ships with a USB cable, plus a DVD ROM with Mac and PC installers for a special 'Launchpad Version' of Ableton Live 8, as well as 1GB of sample content from Loopmasters and Mike The Drummer. It also comes Automap enabled.

Automap Control
A Novation Launchpad can also control other DAWs and plug-ins using Novation's Automap control software. Automap can assign controls to software parameters on VST/AU/RTAS/TDM plug-ins by simply clicking on them, and touching a controller!

Automap-enabled – For instant, intelligent control over VST/AU/RTAS/TDM plug-ins and all MIDI compatible standalone software applications.

See what you're triggering
Automap provides a customizable heads-up transparent display across your computer screen. Ideal for seeing at a glance samples that you're about to trigger.

Unleash the power of QWERTY keyboard shortcuts – Automap PRO, an optional upgrade available to purchase online, lets you assign almost any computer keyboard shortcut, and combinations thereof, to Launchpads buttons.

Old-school MIDI control – Utilising Automap, Launchpad can operate as a standard MIDI controller, creating custom MIDI maps with 72 of its buttons transmitting either CC or MIDI note data.

Flexible trigger platform for Max MSP and Reaktor programmers – Programmers can utilize variable brightness and multicolor LED states to their full advantage when designing new and innovative tools in Max MSP and Reaktor.

Launchpad and Max for Live
Max is a visual programming environment which allows you to custom build instruments and effects. Ableton announced 'Max for Live' when they launched Live 8. This means that Max and Ableton are now integrated, so you can build your own instruments (or tweak other people's) within Live.

Launchpad can be used to control these instruments. For example, parameters on Max for Live's step sequencer can be triggered using Launchpad's buttons. Launchpad gives you a huge amount of visual feedback. Multiple colors and brightnesses across different buttons display visual information about whether the note is on, the velocity, note length, pitch, and whatever else you want to see!

Novation have created a Max for Live step sequencer patch utilizing Launchpad's multicolor and brightness variations, available to download from: www.novationmusic.com

Launchpad supports multiple unit operation. Connect up to 3 Launchpads at a time. Expand your grid with multiple Launchpads, or have one Launchpad dedicated to mixer mode, and the other to launching clips.

Multiple units
Launchpad supports multiple unit operation. Connect up to 6 Launchpads at a time. Expand your grid with multiple Launchpads, or have one Launchpad dedicated to mixer mode, and the other to launching clips.

Novation's Automap-enabled controllers work seamlessly together—a ZeRO SL MkII to control the mix, whilst Launchpad triggers clips!

Amazingish Product

By

from Charleston, SC

Comments about Novation Launchpad Control Surface for Ableton Live:

This product is great for triggering sounds but once a person gets it, they basically have to become a music engineer to use it. I bought this as a "toy" instrument and playing with presets was fun. However, the toy basically becomes an instrument and you have to practice making songs and sounds. This is not a toy for an aimless person who thought that this would be a cool computer gadget to have! Still great, looking to great a launchpad S because it is more velocity sensitive.

Easy to use once you learn how!

By

from Baltimore, MD

Comments about Novation Launchpad Control Surface for Ableton Live:

I bought this with the intention of using it with Ableton Live. I tried it, but Albeton seems to have bad stability at times when DJ'ing on the fly. It's not the Launchpad....it's Ableton. I have started using it with "Traktor" after mapping it out, and it works PERFECT. I Love it. Once you learn how to map out where you want everything...it will fit your set like a glove.

Amazing Controller

By

from Grand Rapids, MI

Comments about Novation Launchpad Control Surface for Ableton Live:

Normally, I tend to build my own controllers from arcade panel parts, but I finally decided to buy a dedicated controller. I was on the line between an Akai, Monome, or Launchpad. I decided to go with the Launchpad, since it most closely resembled a Monome, and had all the control features of an Akai unit. With automap, Launchpad will run with any software, which is a plus if you love Max or MLR. Launchpad is a great controller for anyone; beginners and experienced. It makes navigating the live grid easy and fun(although you'll need to upgrade the software to the full version to go past the 8x8 grid, and unlock most of the instruments). The mixer mode is also extremely user friendly. It does take some getting used to, but if you're familiar with a Monome or Stanton Da Scratch, it should feel pretty natural. My favorite part would be the user modes. As someone who typically builds controllers to my own liking, I was pleasantly surprised to find out that all four modes on the Launchpad could be custom mapped. For example, you can program one of the user modes to control a filter, or any other parameter. There's great videos on YouTube which show you everything you need to know about custom mapping. Normally, I program most clips MLR style, so I'll take a 2 bar phrase, chop it into quarter note long clips, quantize on the 16th, and set my follow action to "0-1-0 next". That way, it feels almost exactly like a Monome. All in all, this is a great controller for anyone who is looking for the best flexibility and versatility in a controller. If you pair it with a small MIDI keyboard (m-Audio's are nice), you'll be able to create an entire track live!

Makes it easy!

By

from utah

Comments about Novation Launchpad Control Surface for Ableton Live:

I'm new to Live 8. I tried live 7 a year ago and went back to logic. i tried live lite 8 that came with the launchpad and I am hooked. Makes everything so easy. Performing, recording ideas, and developing arrangements. I've only had the launchpad for 2 weeks, but I'm having more fun, and being more creatively productive, than I have in a long time. I credit much of this to the launchpad and it's integration with Live. If you have live, then I whole heartily recommend the launchpad.

Solid and Unusual

By

from Dallas/Ft. Worth, Texas

Comments about Novation Launchpad Control Surface for Ableton Live:

I used LP recently in the production studio and for a Live Performance. It's a solid performance controller for live. It's definitley a different and refreshing way to play Live. My only drawback is the lack of the pads velocity. But other than that i love it.

Thinking about an APC40 or a Monome but low on $$$?

By

from Salt Lake City, Utah.

Comments about Novation Launchpad Control Surface for Ableton Live:

This device is awesome and does much more than just trigger clips in Ableton. It can also control all your mixer controls, volume levels, sends, pans, etc.. and it has two user programable pages that you can pair with MAX to use for drum sequencing, playing virtual instruments chromatically, and whatever else you could imagine! Plus you can use the automap software to control more than just Ableton. Paired with a Kore 2 controller or Novation Nocturn, this makes the perfect minimalistic control surface that's also highly portable, the product even includes a protective bag! I would give this product 5 stars because of it's versitality and automap, however I gave it 4 because the pads are not velocity sensitive and they don't feel like your classic Akai pads. The pads are really sensitive though.
