The global studio standard for drum overhead miking.

The Neumann KM 184 Small Diaphram Cardioid Microphone has become the classic high-quality miniature microphone. The pressure gradient transducer used in the KM 184 features very smooth frequency response not only for the 0° axis, but also for lateral (off-axis) sound incidence. In typical usage, there is no coloration of sound over a wide pickup angle.

Although the KM 184 has the same capsule as the KM 84, the microphone differs slightly on the 0° frequency response: The KM 184 has a gentle rise at about 9 kHz (which brings out the sizzle in cymbals), a characteristic that was introduced very successfully with the KM 140. The result is a tonal balance that is fresher and livelier when compared to the KM 84 with its flat frequency response in that band. This difference was achieved with just a slight change of the capsule's rear opening, and is not due to resonances.

With the same transformerless circuitry as is used in the KM 100 system, the KM 184 has excellent technical specifications. Compared to the KM 84 the dynamic range of the KM 184 increased by 24 dB mainly through the reduction of self-noise level to only 22 dB (CCIR) and an increased sound pressure handling capability of up to 138 dB. The KM 184 mic will operate without any problems, even if the input of following equipment happens to be unbalanced, for example as in some DAT recorders. The output is balanced and phantom (48V) powered.

The KM 184 is a good economical alternative choice for users looking for a high-quality miniature microphone. You don't have to give up the electroacoustic features you expect from a Neumann microphone!

  • A modern take on a studio classic

As reviewed by Sean Sullivan on 4/2/2011

The Neumann KM84 is a studio stable, a popular choice for any acoustic source. Long discontinued skyrocketing in price, the KM184 is the best alternative on the market. A slightly brighter, more modern sound than the KM84, the KM184 is at home in front of a guitar or over a drum set. Get a pair!

  • Nice

As reviewed by Alan on 4/2/2011

I needed a small diaphragm mic for acoustic guitar and also strings. This Neumann is a really nice addition to my studio. I usually combine it with a U67 on acoustic. This mic picks up the high-end nuances of the acoustic beautifully. I do think that the price is a bit high for small diaphragm, but I'm only using it in a home studio.

  • Best acoustic guitar mic I've used so far

As reviewed by CHRIS on 7/1/2014

WOW!!! I've never used a vintage KM84 but have several other industry standard mics and this blows them all away for acoustic guitar. I bought one of the newer AKG C451b mics within the past two years for a.g. but it really sucked. Always sounded like a comb filter issue and was way too sensitive to minute changes in position. It didn't layer up well either and sounded like a guitar with a wah-pedal (filter) at a certain frequency. I actually had to use TWO EQs in series, both dipping out the same narrow frequency to get a usable take on more than one occasion with that P.O.S. The KM-184 was TOTALLY different. Very forgiving on position and sounded just like being in the room. It was truly a memorex moment (is it live or is it memorex?) It's now my "Go To" mic for acoustic instruments like guitar and banjo. VERY accurate representation of the instrument even if the player is moving the guitar around while tracking (kinda like an RE-20 in that regard). Finally a mic I can use for a.g. without having to use EQ, WOW times two!!! Just love it...
