Native Instruments revolutionized the DJ world nearly a decade ago with the introduction of TRAKTOR, the world's first professional DJ software. Now they're back at it again with TRAKTOR KONTROL S4, a DJ performance system designed from the ground up from the team behind TRAKTOR.
Free update to the new TRAKTOR PRO 2 software for registered S4 users. See Native Instrument's website for latest software and firmware updates.
The New Performance DJ System
Forget what you know about DJ controllers and DJ software. TRAKTOR KONTROL S4 was designed from its conception as a fully integrated system where software and hardware are fused in perfect harmony. Once you experience it, you'll immediately feel how simple, yet powerful and fluid a professional DJ system can be. TRAKTOR KONTROL S4 is the culmination of a 10-year vision and experience only Native Instruments can provide. So whether you're a seasoned TRAKTOR user looking for the ultimate controller, or just entering the world of digital DJing, the S4 delivers.
Custom-tailored for TRAKTOR, the S4 fuses a premium-quality 4-channel DJ mixer, a built-in 24-bit/96kHz soundcard, an intuitive controller, and the flagship TRAKTOR PRO S4 software into one fully professional solution—the ideal one-stop package for DJs who want pro features, instant usability and go-anywhere portability.
KONTROL In Action
The sleek, stylish controller puts TRAKTOR at your fingertips—fusing hardware and software into one harmonic unit. Innovative Sample Decks, high-quality electromagnetic jog wheels, two effect units, and two clearly laid-out deck control sections can be assigned to any of the four software decks and deliver a new level in creative control over your one shots, tracks, and loops.
The intuitive and ergonomic controller layout and its robust rotary knobs provide precise visual and tactile status feedback—perfect for any DJ situation. Highly responsive to the touch, TRAKTOR KONTROL S4 is incredibly smooth to use, while its slim and compact profile makes it easy to transport from gig to gig.
New TRAKTOR Pro S4 Software
It's super simple to get straight in the mix, thanks to the included TRAKTOR PRO S4 software, adapted from the pioneering TRAKTOR PRO. Developed in perfect synergy with the S4's controller, new features have been added to the TRAKTOR PRO S4 software to fully take advantage of this all-in-one solution, while premium ready-made and instantly combinable loops have been provided by the renowned Loopmasters sample house.
TRAKTOR KONTROL S4 boasts a full-featured 4-channel mixer section with sturdy faders, CUE buttons, illuminated level meters, high-quality 3-band EQs, and a filter control knob on each channel. The filter is switchable between TRAKTOR and Xone-style. The ergonomic layout has been created by DJs for DJs, with some of the world's biggest names having direct input in to the design. It's easy to integrate other DJ and performance gear like turntables, CD players, or a microphone via the inputs.
The innovative new Loop Recorder feature acts like a fifth deck, to add an exciting layer on top of your mix by recording and looping audio on-the-fly. An optional foot controller can be used to engage the Loop Recorder while both hands are busy—for instance while performing an advanced scratch routine.
Integrated Audio Interface
TRAKTOR KONTROL S4 also includes a powerful and versatile audio interface. With the same build quality as all multi-award winning Native Instruments DJ sound cards, this unit lets you easily integrate external turntables and CD players, instruments, MIDI gear, effects, and a microphone into your TRAKTOR DJ sets.
Incorporating high-end AD/DA converters, hi-gain output levels and an ultra-wide frequency response, TRAKTOR KONTROL S4's integrated audio interface provides all the power, clarity, and dynamic range that modern DJs demand.
Hit the Road
TRAKTOR KONTROL S4 is the ideal solution for mobile DJs as it provides everything you need to rock a party in one highly portable unit. It's a breeze to set up—simply plug-and-play—and you're done in seconds. And with its slim profile, it's incredibly easy to transport from gig to gig. The flexible ins and outs of the included soundcard mean it's easy to hook up other gear—including a microphone.
S4 and SCRATCH
In the near future, S4 users will have the option to connect their preferred analog turntables or CDJs to control pitch, scratching, and transport functions for the S4 software. External timecode control via TRAKTOR SCRATCH will open up even more opportunities for creative mixing, fusing the already advanced features of the S4 with the full expressiveness of the traditional turntable / CDJ approach.

I will give you a lil background before I go into the review so you can understand where I am coming from. Before this controller i was using Trakotr Scratch pro, turntables (with timecodes), a 2 channel mixer, and then another peice of equipment somewhat like the x1. What this unit did was simply elimante all my equipment and place it into one finely tuned controller. Scratching on this is not the same as tables, and honestly it shouldnt be. However where this does excel is allowing to keep your tracks perfectly in sync while allowing you to demonstrate your talent through a more creative style of music. Anyone can hit a sync button, however using the other features, filters and effects is where you show your talent. As a club dj, honestly i rarely ever need to scratch, and when i do this really does the job well enough. The buttons/knobs work and feel great, everything you see in traktor is uniformly displayed in a logical and easy to use pattern. I havent had the program crash on me yet, to me feels very stable. The only thing i can say to Native instruments, is please send an update so i can map my own functions. I know the update is on its way, just would like to use some of my old effects routines with this product. Check out ean golden and his controller mappings, some really cool stuff you can do.

Yes, the features, buttons, lighting everything is great about this midi controller is amazing... if it all worked properly. One MAJOR problem that EVERYONE is having is the audio dropping and clicking.. when i play music on my laptop using the s4 it makes audio noises like a poorly recorded song. I am running on a hp laptop, and doing enough research there are also people who own dell, hp, and even MACBOOKS that have this problem, even though we all had the specs that was required. Also the snap button kept blinking, and the customer services for native instruments in hollywood is lazy and very disrespectful. Hopefully they start making all these fixes on the next batch, because these were just my problems, i still hear MANY other problems that otheres have.

I am a begging DJ.I went to the store and eventuaaly got the S2.I soon returned it to get the S4,I knew my choice was correct. At first,Traktor looks a little complicated, but it will be simple to use with the s4. With its loop recorder and sample, this controller is most likely if not the best one out there. It has great features including sample decks which let your creativivty out.The live decks lets you put fx on YOUR voice. The Effects are out of this world. With traktor being updated all the time, you can get free updates. I have had this controller for 6 months now and there are no problems. Trust me, if you love to Dj or listen to music then this is the controller for you. Once you have it, you have complete control.
The S4 is an absolute beast; the sound quality, ease of use, and excellent software allow you to drop monster beats right out of the box. The S4 is an everyman controller, allowing both brand new and professional DJs to both perform at their highest level. I bought this controller about 6 months ago and I couldn't be happier in my decision. Although it is on the pricey side, I highly recommend the S4 for anyone who is willing to pay the extra $ and invest in a top of the line controller. Drop beats, not bombs.
Once upon a time, a great DJ controller existed. I bought it and used it, replacing my Hercules RMX that proved to be a great training mixer. The mixer itself is pretty big, with jog wheels that feel pretty good to the touch and can scratch pretty well. There are knobs and sliders galore! No kills for the treble/mid/bass though.. Oh well, not a huge deal. However, the filter knobs are a really nice element to have. The only problem I've had is a more-than-occasional sound dropout. I've already tried changing my latency, other settings, and also turning off my wifi on my laptop. This happens when I route the sound through the S4's sound card. Other than that, it's been a dream come true. Learning Traktor has proved to be very hard, but once you learn it you can do much more with it than on Virtual DJ.
To start of, Ive been Dj'ing for about 6 months now ,very new into the whole DJ business. I recently bought the S4 2-3 weeks aguo, and all i can tell you is this piece of kit is amazing, i haven't had any crashes, breakdowns, button failure or glitchy attitude with this controller. The knobs, the faders, and the buttons, are well made for the s4. Secondly, i love the material this controller is made out of. Its this kind of plastic/Metal, the knobs are made out of rubber which feel really good, some buttons are made out of plastic some are made out of rubber which also feel great, and comfortable. The jog wheels are small, yet very responsive/comfortable to use, and give 100% feedback when scratched. Also the whole layout of the S4 is so similar to the Traktor 2 software which comes in CD with the purchase of the S4, so everything is easy to find. Thirdly This controller is not huge, however it over size's a backpack so you will need a DJ bag or a flight case to carry it around, this is up to your preference. I personally chose the Traktor S4 flight case just because its more protective, and has a laptop booth. Overall amazing controller, made perfectly for what its meant to do.
I have only had this unit for a month so as far as long term technical problems... we'll see. I suggest never purchasing any DJ equipment from Guitar Center without the warranty anyways so I'm not too worried. As far as the controller goes, it is pretty awesome. The software can be tricky to get going. It would not work at all on my computer at first but after fiddling with it for a week I have it playing at the highest quality it can go. They have tips and tricks for optimizing computers for thier software and they are dummy proof. Also thier customer service is quite good. They are often busy but when they answer they help you in any way they can. This is my second DJ unit so I am new to the field but I can't wait to buy two turn tables and spin timecode vinyl while using the Traktor as a really great mixer. It allows you to grow as a DJ and at a reasonable price. As far as the actual program goes I have heard more good things about Traktor than Serato but I suggest trying both anyways. I love the many features on Traktor (and wow, are there a lot.)
The Traktor Kontrol S4 is a good controller for mobile DJ, or for mixing at home, although a little on the expensive side for the bedroom DJ. The unit is mostly plastic and thin aluminum, so if going mobile, you will need a quality road case. Traktor makes a custom road case for the unit with a sliding laptop shelf, however at the time of this review they are not currently being sold. Road Ready Cases makes pro grade cases for the S4, one with an integrated laptop shelf and one without. If your S4 will be living in a home studio, you can get the Decksavers plastic cover to protect from dust and small airborne objects such as Nerf balls and the CD's you will be throwing around after going all digital. The buttons are all rubber, and feel very solid, and the knobs and faders feel pretty solid, however if you like to slam fade, I would recommend investing in the extended warranty. If you do purchase the S4, be sure your computer at least minimally EXCEEDS the minimum specs for the S4/Pro 2 software, or you will be whining on the forums about how the S4 sucks cause it always freezes up, pops and clicks, and crashes on the Toshiba you bought on clearance from Office Depot. I have not had any problems with the unit, and If you are gentle with your equipment and follow the directions you shouldn't have any problems either. When you purchase the S4, you have to calibrate the jog wheels before you use it (this takes about 15 seconds) or the warning light will flash and the uncalibrated deck will get "stuck" and the track will freeze when you let go of the platter. Also, make sure the S4 and your computer power are plugged-in, or the warning light will flash and you may experience a tad bit of latency from time to time. Also make sure the S4 is plugged in to your computer, or none of the lights will come on and nothing happens when you push the play button. Overall the S4 is an awesome companion to Traktor Pro and I highly recommend it to anyone who is willing to take 10 extra seconds to gently place the unit into the back of the reliable vehicle that I'm sure every mobile DJ has, instead of drunkenly throwing it upside down in the leaking trunk of your Honda during a thunderstorm. Practice. Aaaand Enjoy.
well to start i being play music for about 32 year as disc jockey .ifind this instutment very realable and very responsible with all bell and whistle that come with it.native instrument did a good jod putting this traktor kontroler s4 together you control both desks and has a smoth crossfade the reverb and echo and software software the come with it it very easy to use.just said the lease for mobile dj there nothing better to say like hit the road jack
The S4 is everything as advertised and quite a bit more. I have been using it for 2 months with no issues and am delighted with it. The unit is well constructed, the nobs and sliders are solid and layout is simple and easy to navigate. One common complaint about the S4 is alleged crashing, drop outs and popping. All of this can be avoided by using a fresh install of Windows and performing some optimization tasks before installing the The S4 drivers and Traktor software. If you don't want to spend a little extra time getting the environment right for your digital mixing setup then look elsewhere. If you want to invest that time and be rewarded with an incredible system the S4 is for you. The new version of Traktor is being released on April 1st 2011 and S4 owners will get the new version for free.
This is my second DJ Controller and i am amazed with all the features. Had a few problems at first with the decks freezing but after the update and recalibration of the decks i was good to go. Come from using Traktor Pro the S4 software was basically nothing new. I hardly use the sample decks and normal just mix with 4 decks so I remapped my controller a bit which was pretty easy. It has alot of flexibility and is great for people that have been mixing for a little while but want to step up their game to the next level.
I'm sorry but it sounds like the emotionally upset dj had poor luch and got a bum s4. i've been using traktor now for 3 years, before i used ableton but lets all be real, if you dj using ableton its more or less cheating, its just so easy. i decided to try something new so i switched over to traktor. for a while i had a numark stealth midi controller, and let me tell you that midi was the absolute worst thing ever. I had so many issues with it, I must have replaced it 4 or 5 times, and every freaking one broke within a month, they were all just aweful quality. Then I decided it was time to step up, I knew I wanted cdj's or an s4, and ultimately I chose the s4. My reasoning, well everything is headed toward digital djing, cd's are slowly but surely becoming a thing of the past, and the S4 is truly revolutionary. So, I went ahead and bought one, and the fun hasn't ceased since. all of the knobs, buttons, wheels, etc feel nice and flow smoothly. Syncing tracks is simple, the effects are simple (you can run up to 4 effects at once), and the looping system is simple. The looping system is state of the art, you can run 4 loops simultaneously on different decks while playing two different tracks. Configuring settings is very simple and pleasant, native instruments really did an excellent job with the programming in S4. Traktor is easy to use and understand, it may take some getting use too, however once you get the hang of it the possibilites are endless. In the end the program is fun and enjoyable to use, the controller is versatile, lightweight, reliable, and also quite enjoyable to use. Native Instruments really out did themselves on this product, I'd strongly recommend investing in an S4.
