Comments about Native Instruments Maschine Jam:
I've been using Maschine for 5 years for production and have had most of the controllers in my studio at one point or another. The thing that struck me about Maschine vs a traditional DAW is the speed of browsing and of track creation. Jam enhances this experience by adding controls not available on the Mikro, MK2 or Studio. The most useful feature of the Jam is the ability to easily create and duplicate patterns, not to mention set or modify pattern length. It's just so much faster than using shift commands on my Maschine Studio. They make Scenes and Patterns make much more sense than they did at any time before. Up until I got the Jam I would work within one scene and stem out audio to Reaper for arrangement and mixdown. Now I'm getting closer and closer to doing the entire track within the Maschine software.
The second most useful feature of Jam is the touch strips and the perform fx. They are incredibly fun and I could see them coming in very handy for live performance. I haven't done much of that yet so the verdict will have to come later. I WILL say I'm more interested now in routing audio from Maschine standalone to my DAW because of the new features. It's much more fun to perform the track using Jam than to sequence the whole thing & do an audio dump at the end.
One important thing to touch on which is something I wondered and I've now confirmed. Maschine Jam is NOT a replacement for any other Maschine controller. Beyond its lack of screens and sampling controls, the lack of velocity sensitivity makes the Jam an uninspiring choice for performing beats or melodic parts. There are functions to make things more "humanized" by varying velocity, etc, but it's not the same as playing it like an instrument. If you're mostly a step-sequence person, Jam might really work for you just by itself. But for me, having Maschine Studio next to my Jam is indispensable. That said, I would still HIGHLY RECOMMEND Jam as a compliment to other Maschine controllers.
