Great way to enter the world of FM synthesis

Comments about Native Instruments FM7 Soft Synth VST Native:

I own a DX7, tx81Z and FS1R so I am quite familiar with FM synthesis. And after using this VST synth I will have to say that it is a great value and a really flexible way to jump into the world of FM synthesis. The synth engine is capable of surpassing the original Yamaha DX line in capabilities as well (by adding extra operators including filter and distortion operators) and providing a much more flexible, built-in way to manage patches than the "real" synths provided. Not only that, but the VST allows you to import patches created for the older hardware machines and does an adequte job of reproducing the classic sounds (at least with DX7 patches, which is all I've tried). Also, the interface is so much easier to use than the hardware synths small lcd panel. Actually being able to see all the settings at once is a great boon. Even if you don't want to get into programming your own sounds this little plugin opens the door to the massive amount of free DX7 patches out there on the internet. The only negative I can see is that the interface itself while a big improvement over a real DX7 still could be a little more improvement as far as usability. I would have liked a more standard Windows like interface instead of the cutesy faux DX7 panel. But it is a minor quibble.
