Availability:

Top-of-the-line drum kits, detailed mixing options, and a ready-to-go groove library, packed with authentic beats of all colors and flavors.

Native Instruments STUDIO DRUMMER is the perfect realization of a drummer in software. It’s the only product of its kind built on the amazing new features of KONTAKT 5, the world’s most powerful sampling engine, which has been re-confi gured specifi cally to provide the power required by STUDIO DRUMMER. A complete toolkit for realistic acoustic drum tracks, STUDIO DRUMMER gives you three top-of-the-line drum kits, detailed mixing options, high-quality studio effects and a ready-to-go groove library, packed with authentic beats of all colors and fl avors. Thanks to the range and quality of the grooves provided, STUDIO DRUMMER makes it easy for non-drummers to produce lifelike, dynamic drum tracks.

THE DRUMS:
STUDIO DRUMMER gives you three premium acoustic kits: Top-of-the-line drums and cymbals with additional snare options, a tambourine, sticks, a cowbell and handclaps – all painstakingly recorded using the best mics and outboard gear available.

Three Drum Kits
STUDIO DRUMMER provides three full kits, each with premium cymbals, an additional matched custom snare and a characteristic room sound:

The Stadium Kit – A big kit with a big, monster rock sound.
The Session Kit – A versatile, studio sound – ideal for pop, country or anything else.
The Garage Kit – This kit has a surly, aggressive edge for blues, alternative rock and much more.

THE STUDIO
Behind the glass, STUDIO DRUMMER provides a dedicated mixing environment. All drums close mic’d, plus adjustable snare bleed, stereo overheads, room mics for ambience and an additional mono mic on the entire kit. Mixer presets, with precision mic levels, room sound and effects, provide fast-track settings for a wide range of sounds. A high-quality studio effects section provides you with premium CONVOLUTION REVERB, a TAPE SATURATOR, the SOLID G-EQ, the SOLID BUS COMP compressor and the awe-inspiring TRANSIENT MASTER.

THE DRUMMER
What good is an awesome drum kit without the skills to play it? STUDIO DRUMMER gives you the chops on a plate, with over 3,500 drum patterns and fills in a wide range of styles. Just find the beat that suits the track you’re working on, choose fills and variations to match, then drag and drop onto your host sequencer. All grooves were recorded live especially for STUDIO DRUMMER, for 100 percent realism.
KEY

Over 3,500 Grooves
The groove library is your own personal session drummer. It contains over 3,500 grooves for pop, rock, funk, jazz, indie, metal, ballads, blues or country, with a choice of fills and variations for each groove. All patterns were played live by pro drummers for organic, physical authenticity. The Tightness control lets you adjust the feel of each groove in real time, from gridded precision to enigmatic slack.
When you find what you’re looking for, simply drag and drop grooves and fills into your host sequencer to create a new MIDI pattern. Using grooves is a great way to produce authentic-sounding drum tracks. Quick, realistic and fun.

The Perfect Mix
The mixer section in STUDIO DRUMMER provides ultra-precise control over the mic levels on each drum, plus overheads, stereo room mics and a mono mic on the entire kit to pull things together. The mix presets put pro sound just a click away, and provide a perfect starting point for detailed tweaking. Each snare provides faders for top and bottom mic, plus adjustable bleed level. Here, ‘bleed’ refers to how the rest of the kit rattles the snare wires – raise the bleed level for more realism. On the kick, adjust the level of the inside and outside mics, plus an additional ‘sub’ fader, to get the perfect amount of click vs. boom.

Each drum has its own effect chain with a selection of routing options. STUDIO DRUMMER uses top-grade effects derived from the SOLID MIX SERIES, including the SOLID G-EQ. This recreates a classic studio channel strip – a uniquely musical 4-band EQ with switchable fixed-bell curves on the low and high bands, plus adjustable Q settings on the midrange.

Solid Bus Comp
Also available as a fully-fledged product in its own right, this virtual reproduction of a legendary compressor adds presence and drive to your drums without blurring the detail. And it’s not just for bus compression – the SOLID BUS COMP is available on each of the mixer tracks in STUDIO DRUMMER.

Transient Master
Another premium-grade effect, also available separately – the TRANSIENT MASTER is an incredibly musical and versatile tool for re-shaping sounds. Emphasize attack to make a drum hit harder, bring sounds to the front of the mix or smooth out spiky drums without touching the levels.

Tape Saturator
Like all the others, this effect is provided on each individual mixer track. By simulating the natural, harmonic compression of analog tape, the TAPE SATURATOR adds a pleasing warmth to your sound. And pushed a little harder, it delivers a smooth, organic overdrive.

Convolution Reverb
The drums were recorded in perfect acoustic conditions, and the overhead and room mic options on the mixer provide tight control over the room sound. But STUDIO DRUMMER goes one step further, with an integrated CONVOLUTION REVERB – 30 high-end impulse responses ranging from small rooms to big halls, for extra space and depth on your drums.

Native Instruments Studio Drummer Features:

  • Great Sounds, Very Convincing

As reviewed by Chris Quick on 4/9/2012

I purchased this product while it was on sale and I couldn't be more pleased with it! The drums sounds are very convincing and work well if the drum part provided is less than ideal. If you've programmed drums using a keyboard, then programming your own patterns isn't that difficult as they are mapped to standard drum keys (C1 - Bass Drum, D1 - Snare, etc.). If you want to make use of special drum hits, they are mapped to the higher keys, but using the lower keys provides very authentic sounding drum parts. The mixer provides very good control over the end sound, with the ability to use four different onboard effects. If you stink at mixing drums, native instruments has provided several preset mixes that fit most every style of music. The presets get you started and you can tweak those to better fit your taste. The three different drum sets allow a lot of flexibility. The Stadium kit works well for classic rock or blues where you need a fuller sounding kit. The Garage Kit works well for metal or alternative with a up-in-your-face sound. If you need a good all around kit, the Session Kit fills the remaining gaps. There are over 3,000 available patterns, organized by genre and tempo. This is where I feel Native Instruments really dropped the ball, and thus 4 stars instead of 5. Most of the grooves are for 100 bpm or better songs. There are very few good grooves for 3/4, 6/8 or 12/8 times -- so if you do country ballads or a lot of 6/8 blues you'll find the grooves lacking. The other side of this is finding grooves and fills that fit together well. It is more a process of trial and error to find a fill that fits one of the grooves you are using. Each file is described by which note division is used on the high hat or ride (i.e. 4th High Hat Closed, 8th Ride Sidestick). This makes it difficult to go back and find which pattern folder you were using to match the song. The other area this product seems to suffer is on the hardware side. If you use a lot of virtual instruments in your recordings, you will want to set the drum track and pre-render it almost at the beginning as it really bogs down a computer (admittedly, my system needs an overhaul, but I can run a host of other virtual instruments without a problem -- add Studio Drummer and I'm freezing the track in Cubase as soon as I'm happy with it). Would I buy this product at full price? Probably not. If it had been the regular price I would most likely have gone with another product. However, I am very pleased with this product. It was right in line with what I needed as I am just beginning to set up a home recording studio.

  • Most Realistic Drum Software

As reviewed by Neil Goldman on 4/4/2012

I have no idea what that other review is talking about. From unboxing, to mixing with Studio Drummer, took me about 20 minutes (10 of those minutes was installing from the DVDs, and another 5 was waiting for the update to download). -- If you can't understand Studio Drummer, you won't understand Toontrack, BFD, Addictive... -- That aside, what do I actually think about it? It sounds great. Definitely the most realistic of any software I've used (EZDrummer, Superior, Addictive). The room sounds amazing, and the bleed and reverb is also great, as well as the included mixer effects. It helps that you can route the tracks separately, as I prefer to mix the kick and snare with my own plugins, and leave everything else inside of Kontakt. -- The last thing I have to say is that it's definitely the most roomy of any software. So if you're looking for that Toontrack "dry and quantized" sound, you'll need to work hard to get it. The same way if you want a nice live sounding kit from SD 2.0, you'll need to work on that. But ultimately, the room sounds were why I bought Studio Drummer and why I love it.
