The Nady RSM-2 Studio Ribbon Mic is designed for use in contemporary studios. It offers the unique natural sound previously only available on such classic large ribbon mics as the legendary RCA 44. Perfect for recording vocals, acoustic instruments, strings, horns, orchestras, choral groups, ambient instrument audio, and many live sound applications.

The RSM-2 delivers the uncompromised sound of a classic ribbon mic with its low-tension 2" 2-micron thick aluminum ribbon. It has smooth, natural response with extended low and high ends and delivers fast, accurate transient response.

The figure-8 pickup pattern offers extended sweet spots and increased off-axis high frequency reponse on the sides with decreased high response above and below on-axis (though with lower audio levels). Individual recording volume control of separate sources is enabled through the use of stereo mic setups where isolation is achieved by placing the source so that it is in the principal axis of one mic and the off-axis null of the other.

The RSM-2 has a machined housing with internal shockmount construction for rugged reliability and includes an integrated yoke mic stand mount, XLR cord, and padded carrying case.

Really cool

By david kennedy

from cleveland, oh

Cool, but a little dark. Works well to take the edge off of just about anything. I like it best on vox and acoustic guitar. Nice natural open sound everywhere except really high notes. Big and good looking. Gets a good performance out of just about anyone. Great starter ribbon mic or for something different.

Great Choice

Purchased one of these as a stand in for an RCA model. Haven't missed that RCA. I'd say it performs just as well but at a much more comfortable price range. I'm finally not afraid to let one of my artists touch the mic boom themselves to adjust the distance. Good choice, also, if you need more than one ribbon or are operating on a tight budget. The only beef that I have with it is that you cannot select the pickup pattern and I would have rather had an XLR plug on the body rather than an XLR cord coming out of it.

Naturally Amazing

By rockvoc25

We were recording with an Oktava MK219 Condenser mic and it was O.K. When my RSM-2 came in we quickly went to the studio, then armed a separate channel and recorded. As we listened to the original and then switched to the RSM-2 channel to compared, I was jaw-dropped at how natural it sounded. It warmed up my voice and thickened it with no effects added. I hate listening to myself on a recording but with this mic I can actually enjoy the quality of sound coming from the mic. It's a must buy for any recording artist on a budget. To put it simple, you will have no regrets after purchasing this amazing mic. Just don't do what I did and almost run phantom power to it. Luckily I read the precautions right before I plugged it in because this is the first ribbon mic I have ever owned. By the way the only reason I am giving this mic a 4.5 Overall is because of the cord being mounted to the mic instead of having a XLR connection. Handling it in and out the bag is aggravating but that's the only down side I find, and other than that it is the best thing I did for my voice yet.

Good low-cost ribbon mic

I wanted to add a ribbon mic to my modest collection, and the price was right. It's become the go-to mic when I need to record flutes or violins. It gives the instruments a sophisticated depth in the mix.

I Love it!

By GPerryman

I've owned this mic for awhile now and is an excellent choice for those of us that are operating on a budget. I found it to be perfect for recording anything that has a bit too much high end (mandolin etc.) but yet still keeping a clear clean signal.

A Very Pleasant Surprise

By GoofyDawg-QoR3y

I bought the RSM-2 as an inexpensive "experiment." Little did I know that this mic would be as versatile as it has been for me. For years, I've been searching for a decent, inexpensive mic that had a good frequency response that could be used for a variety of recording applications, and I've finally got that with the RSM-2. Out of the box, the lows are a tad washed out, but mids and highs are really crisp. I find it amazing that I've got all this versatility in a sub-$200 mic.For my applications, I use the RSM-2 to record vocals and guitars (acoustic and electric), and in either application, it really delivers. Note: You need a pre-amp for this mic! The output is just too low for this to plug directly into a recording box. I use a Presonus TubePRE that not only boosts the sound, it also warms up the tone quite nicely (and cleans up the washed out lows that I mentioned above). As far as features are concerned, typical of this type of mic, the RSM-2 is heavy. Have a good stand on hand. The built-in cable is a bit dubious, and it seems a little on the cheap side, but it works just fine. You do have to be careful of putting the mic into its padded bag, though - the cable is not seated well to the mic body, and if you're not careful, it might just pull out (haven't done that yet, but I have loosened the seating collar. Not good). Overall, I've found very little NOT to like about this mic. Granted, I'm not a recording engineer, but I've spent plenty of time around studios, and frankly, the sound it produces in combination with a decent pre-amp is stellar!

Great Microphone

By kg4muc-WaNMD

The RSM 2 IMHO is an excellent bang for the buck! I have been using it in the studio for nearly a week solid and have found no major drawbacks..maybe one small downside would be the need for a good preamp with atleast 40-60 Db gain. This mic makes the modern day digital recordings much warmer than one could imagine. It does well on instruments but seems to excel on vocals. All we record is bluegrass/acoustic music so I can't actually speak from experience on its full line of uses but for the money spent every studio should have one!! Old School Technology and sound at present day bargain prices! An excellent combination!

A fabulous Microphone

By Drew-PqCnE

I've been using one for over a year now and WOW I have found so many good uses for this mic.. great for vocals in my live room (especially grouped backups...) but wait till you try it off axis on guitar cabs!!! Place the mic with it's SIDE facing the speaker and bam there it is the figure 8 pattern gives awesome depth and "in the room" sound to cabs.. I was always afraid of ribbons because they're supposed to be SO fragile.. but we don't have to treat ours like an eggshell and it still works after being dropped and even accidentaly having phantom power sent to it ( A BIG NO NO) a great ribbon mic why pay more to get less....

A giant technology leap--backwards!

This mic is incredible. It totally warms up the digital sound associated with my Roland hard disc recorder. Extremely high SPL. A very different sound than any dynamic or condenser mic I have ever used, will be a great asset to any home studio.

RSM2 Brings reality to your mic closet

By G-Bot the Broadway Android

from Ontario

I purchased the Nady RSM2 ribbon mic as an inexpensive experiment. I wanted to see if the legendary ribbon technology was as tonal and real as it was touted to be. Being an engineer for all styles of music, I was looking for a mic with diversity and realism that could be applied to a variety of sound sources. On voice and percussion it is "all that". It reproduced voice with truth and wholeness. Hand drums and shrill percussion jump out of the playback. On a nylon string guitar it gives the same warm sound as the live instrument with no EQ required. I have had great results using this mic paired with an ADK A 51. The 51 has a more brittle and cutting sound which which compliments the warmth of the Nady when used to emphasize diction. For the price it is the best value on the market. It looks good in the room and vocalists seem to enjoy performing to this handsome mic. The attached cord is a drag. I'm not sure what the point of that is..... This mic needs a LOT of gain so a clean, powerful (preferably tube) preamp is a must have. I often need to supply 60db of gain to get a useable level on my mac recorder.
