I purchased an SP-5 on sale around a year ago. I was so impressed with it, I purchased four more. What initially piqued my interest, was the neodymium cartridge and a low impedance of 250 ohms. This is one of those rare exceptions where "you get what you pay" for does not apply. I compared the SP-5 to a number of microphones... SM57 with A2WS windscreen, SM58, Samson R11, Beyerdynamic Opus 29-S, Sennheiser e815-S and e835, Radio Shack 33-3043, Peavey PVM22 Diamond Series, Audio-Technica M4000S, etc. I found it closest to the Sennheiser e815, in terms of vocal reproduction and proximity effect. Bright vocal response, and crisp mid-range presence. Also, very good build quality. Non slippery finish, unlike some others in this price range. It's also transformerless, and has a humbucking coil. Great proximity effect, where you don't have to sing at an exact distance from it. 4 to 6 inches is good, but it will also pick you up very well from a foot away (without having to belt it out). When singing closer, it will also pick you up from either side, as well as above and below. You don't have to worry about the slightest movement causing an alarming jump in decibels, and crackling mids. I generally prefer to use this over the SM58. I see people slamming mics for not coming with a cord and/or an on/off switch. These are not valid reasons to hand out a low rating. Most of your better mics have no switch, and come with no cord.
These mics works for what I needed but the only problem I found is there is no on and off switch on the mics.
